Resorts in Maldives offer incredible accommodations in a destination known as the Republic of Maldives and Maldive Islands. An archipelagic state and country in South Asia, Maldives is located remotely in the Indian Ocean, about 1,700 miles southwesterly of India and Sri Lanka. Indeed, Maldives arguably is the world’s most remarkable destination in terms of both uniqueness and beauty. Unlike anywhere, resorts in Maldives are set mostly on their own islands, and are reachable only via speedboat, sea plane and/or domestic flight transfers via local international airport. Scenic views from these transfers can be visually stunning. White sandy beaches, infinity pools, fine dining, over-water villas, spas, restaurants and bars, and of course water sports are some of the Maldives’ main draws. When snorkeling in lagoons, or scuba diving in the Indian Ocean, some of the various sea life you may encounter include reef fish, tuna, sea turtles, octopus, squid, lobsters and dolphins. While you may see many sharks, attacks are essentially non-existent, with very few shark attacks ever reported on humans. More dangerous than sharks actually are stingrays. With stingrays, it’s best to try and keep your distance from the animal, especially directly above or behind, as their tails can be used like daggers. Keep in mind that stingrays sometimes hide in sand to avoid predators, so generally it’s best not to swim too close to the bottom. Generally, snorkeling and scuba diving are very safe in the Maldives. It’s good to be aware of, however, the water’s dangerous animals, which include Lionfish (venomous), Stonefish (venomous), Blue-ringed Octopus (venomous), Moray Eels, Sea Urchins, Blue-spotted Rays (venomous), Stingrays, various shark species (most commonly black tip reef and white tip reef sharks), Corals, Triggerfish, Barracuda and Surgeonfish. Attempting to keep at least a short distance from any of these creatures will help to ensure an outstanding experience. Swimming with any type of fish food or blood is definitely not advisable. Additionally, do not make contact with coral, as it is sharp and can even sting. Be sure to heed the local dive shop’s or water sport equipment rental agency’s tips/advice before partaking in any water activities. When roaming on land and especially in public places, it’s important to dress modestly, to steer clear of Malé at night and not to wear shoes in homes or mosques. Keep in mind that Maldives is a Muslim country. As such, drugs, alcohol, pork and dogs (hot dogs and actual dogs) are strictly prohibited in public places. According to estimates, Maldives has been inhabited for around 2500 years. Scribed by early Maldives’ settlers, copperplate documents known as Loamaafaanu provide the best intel on early settlement. Gujaratis, who reached and settled Sri Lanka circa 500 BCE, are thought to be Maldives’ first settlers. North Indian cultural influence in the area has been evidenced by boatbuilding methods and silver punch-marked coins. Likely, Sri Lankan people emigrated to the Maldives according to the 300 BCE Mahāvaṃsa. Divi and Dheyvi are names attributed to the area’s first settlers. Early Maldives buildings, temples and compounds, likely built of wood and palm fronds, have naturally perished. Maldives was further developed under Buddhist and Islamic periods, which lasted until 1558, when the Portuguese established a small garrison in the area. Subsequently, and unsuccessfully, the Portuguese attempted to instill Christianity on the islands. Locals, in turn, eventually drove out the Portuguese. By the mid-17th century, the Dutch had established a hegemony in the area. The Dutch also were driven out, this time by way of British enforcement. From 1796 until 1952, the Maldives remained a British crown protectorate. Britain encouraged the development of a constitutional monarchy, which ultimately resulted in an angry mob publicly tearing up the crown’s Constitution. On March 15th, 1968, a referendum was held, whereby the Maldives’ parliament ruled in favor of a Republic, thus ending an 853-year monarchy. An official Republic was established under president Ibrahim Nasir circa November 11th, 1968. Beginning in the 1970s, tourism commenced on the archipelago, with the first resort being Kurumba Maldives on the now-popular North Male Atoll.

Pronounced maal · deevz, Maldives is Asia’s smallest country by land area and population. Home to around 520,000 “Dhivehins”, Maldives is an isolated archipelago in the Arabian Sea. Maldives’ capital is Malé, pronounced maa · leh. With a population of around 250,000, Malé is one of the world’s most densely-populated cities. Maldives’ capital is known as “King’s Island” due to the ancient royal dynasties’ ruling from its central location. Likely you won’t be spending any time in the capital. If, for some reason, you find yourself there, you should be careful, especially at night. Also, do not hold hands or kiss publicly if in Malé. In Maldives, consistently hot and humid weather can be experienced throughout the year. Average high temperatures remain in the upper 80-degrees Fahrenheit. Maldives’ popular local foods include rice, garudia (soup made from dried or smoked fish and eaten with rice, lime and chili), curries, vegetables, pickles and spicy sauces. Naturally, seafood is a Maldives staple food. Common fish dishes consist of various tuna species, wahoo and mahi-mahi. Although alcoholic beverages are found commonly in most resorts, the general population does not consume alcohol. Owing to British tradition, kalhu sai (black tea) and kiru sai (milk tea) are common local drinks.
