Hotels in Barcelona

Hotels in Barcelona offer excellent accommodations in a city nicknamed “Barna”. Known for its medieval and modernista architecture, museums, churches, shopping malls, Michelin-starred restaurants, beaches, parks, good weather, fashion, nightlife and football, Barcelona is located on Spain’s northeastern shoreline in Catalonia (a northeastern Spain autonomous community). About half-way between the  Catalonian cities of Girona (northerly) and Terragona (southerly), Barcelona, the Catalonia region’s capital, is bounded by Parc Natural de la Serra de Collserola (natural park – cycling, birdwatching, historic sites, themed / guided walks) to its immediate northwest, Parc Agrari del Baix Llobregat (nature preserve – fruit orchards, seasonal artichoke fields) to its immediate southwest, and the Mediterranean Sea to its immediate east. Within the city, major attractions include Basílica de la Sagrada Família (Gaudi 1880s Basilica), Park Güell (park / mosaic buildings / sculptures / museum), Plaça de Catalunya (plaza), Spotify Camp Nou (FC Barcelona stadium), Casa Batlló (historical landmark – dragon-roofed apartment block / museum by architect Antoni Gaudi), La Pedrera – Casa Milà (historical landmark – art nouveau building / exhibitions / concerts, by Gaudi), Arc de Triomf (monument), Ciutadella Park (1800s park – zoo, boating lake, museums, walking trails), Westfield La Maquinista (shopping mall), Cathedral of Barcelona (Gothic cathedral), Montjuïc Castle (17th century fortress / prison / military museum), Recinte Modernista de Sant Pau (historical place / modernista hospital / Moorish pavilions), Centro Comercial Splau (shopping mall), Columbus Monument (memorial), Palau de la Música Catalana (Art nouveau concert hall), L’illa Mall Diagonal (shopping mall), Gran Via 2 (shopping mall), Tibidabo (amusement park), Westfield Glòries Mall (shopping mall), CosmoCaixa Museum of Science (museum),  Mercat de Sant Antoni (fresh food market), Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya (Palatial art museum), Picasso Museum Barcelona (Medieval mansions / Picasso museum), Palau Sant Jordi (indoor arena), El Corte Inglés Diagonal (shopping mall), Palau Güell (Gaudi modernist mansion / museum), Telefèric de Montjuïc (mountain cable car), Lluís Companys Olympic Stadium (1992 Olympics stadium), El Corte Inglés Cornellà (shopping mall), MUHBA Turó de la Rovira (local history museum), Centre Comercial Finestrelles (shopping mall), CaixaForum Barcelona (art nouveau textile factory / cultural center), Casa Vicens Gaudí (Antoni Gaudi museum), Parc del Laberint d’Horta (Neoclassical park / cypress tree maze), Museu d’Art Contemporani de Barcelona (contemporary art museum), La Esquinica (Tapas bar), Fundació Joan Miró (modern art museum), Parc de Can Mercader (park), L’Auditori (auditorium / symphony orchestra venue), Stage Front Stadium (RCD Espanyol stadium), Sala Apolo (disco club), Fira Barcelona Gran Via (exhibition and trade center),  Barceloneta Beach (Barcelona Beach), Parc Central de Nou Barris (park), Parc del Mirador del Poble-sec (park), Tibidabo Funicular (tourist attraction), Parc del Guinardó (park), Plaça de les Glòries Catalanes (plaza), Casino Barcelona (casino), Parc de la Pegaso (park), Parc Fluvial del Besòs (park), Malalts de Festa (disco club), Parc del Turó (park), Barcelona Botanical Garden (Mediterranean botanical garden), Pont del Petroli (pier), Can Cortada (Catalonian restaurant),  Monastery of Pedralbes (Gothic monastery), Monumental (historic bullring / concert venue) and La Madurada (restaurant). Winners of 22 European / worldwide titles, and holders of multiple title records, FC Barcelona plays at the aforementioned Spotify Camp Nou on the city’s west side. Barcelona’s main airport is Josep Tarradellas Barcelona-El Prat Airport, which is located on the south side. Barna’s metro train system runs on a network of 11 rail lines. Good to know is that Uber rideshare is operational in Barcelona, and does encompass the airport. A cruise line destination, Barcelona is home to a cruise terminal that is located conveniently close to city center. Just north of the cruise terminal is the 2.5-mile long, golden sand Barcelona Beach, also known as Barceloneta Beach. On Barcelona Beach, always keep an eye on your personal belongings, do not buy drinks from anyone, and be mindful not to step on any sea urchins. Also good to know in Barcelona is that the area has its own language known as the Catalan language. Of course, Spanish is also spoken widely, and English is moderately understood. In summertime, Barcelona can get crowded. About 180 free public WiFi hotspots are found throughout the city, with WiFi access extending to beach areas. On Sundays, many shops shut down in Barca. Generally, the city’s inhabitants are quite friendly, though it’s entirely possible that some residents might be unwelcoming to tourists. Take care not to disturb the daily siesta (afternoon nap). Dinnertime can be from 9-11:30 pm, with clubs often staying open until 5-6 am. In Barcelona, currency is the Euro, the drinking age is 18 years old and cars travel on the right-hand side. Top events include Epiphany, Saint George’s Day, Festes de La Merce, Sonar Festival, Primavera Sound Festival, Spannabis, Guitar BCN Festival, Spanish Grand Prix, Barcelona Wine Week, Grec Festival and Festes de Santa Eulàlia. Hotels in Barcelona are some of Spain’s best accommodations. Before we get to hotels in Barcelona, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help maximize your experience.

Although Barcelona’s pre-history is largely unknown, tombs and dwellings have been discovered that date to pre-5000 BC. Two legends point to either mythological Hercules or Carthaginian General Hamilcar Barca, Hannibal’s father, as being the city’s founder. Of course, the latter legendary founder holds more merit, though neither have been proven. At the foot of Montjuïc hill, 3rd century BC coins, along with an Iberian script referencing the name Bárkeno, have been found. Around 15 BC, the Romans established a military camp in the area and set up The Roman Forum near present-day Plaça de Sant Jaume, which remains Barcelona’s, as well as surrounding Catalonia’s, administrative center to this day. In the early 5th century, the city was conquered by Germanic Visigoths, who subsequently were overrun by the Middle Eastern Umayyad Caliphate in the early 8th century. Louis the Pious, King of the Franks and Charlemagne’s son, conquered the city from the Umayyad Caliphate following his Carolingian army’s 801 AD siege of Barcelona. Indeed, the city changed hands dramatically near the start of Anno Domini. Following Barcelona’s sacking, and most of the city’s population either being killed or enslaved, by Muslim Arab Andalusi military leader Almanzor in 985, a dynastic union formed between Aragon and the County of Barcelona circa 1137. The marriage of Ramon Berenguer IV and Petronilla of Aragon bore Alfonso II of Aragon, whose territories would develop into the Crown of Aragon (13th-17th centuries). At the height of its power, the Crown of Aragon controlled eastern Spain, parts of southern France, the Balearic Islands, Sicily, Corsica, Sardinia, Malta and parts of Greece. Up until the 15th century, Barcelona was the leading slave trade center of the Crown of Aragon. Likely Europe’s oldest central bank, arising from necessities of the state, the Taula de canvi de Barcelona was established in 1401. Aragon and Castille’s royal lines were united in 1469 with the marriage of Ferdinand II and Isabella I. America’s colonization reduced the financial importance of Mediterranean trade, and Madrid became the center of Spain’s political power around that time. Reapers’ War, or the Catalan Revolt, occurring in Catalonia from 1640-1659 between The Principality of Catalonia and Habsburg Spain, resulted in a Catalan defeat along with the Treaty of the Pyrenees, a part of which saw Spain ceding Northern Catalonia to France. During the War of Spanish Succession, the 1705 siege of Barcelona between Pro-Bourbon Spain and England, the Dutch Republic and Pro-Habsburg Spain resulted in Pro-Bourbon Spain’s entire garrison being captured.  Montjuïc Castle, which had established out of a fortress in 1694, was captured by the British during the 1705 siege. Again during the Napoleonic Wars, the castle was captured, this time by the French Army but without a shot ever being fired, as the troops guarding the castle were ordered not to fight the French.  Following the Napoleonic Wars, industrialization aided Barcelona, though the city also struggled with population density and the accompanying diseases. Urban planner and civil engineer Ildefons Cerdà, considered the founder of modern town planning as a discipline, proposed a solution to the city’s population density problem, a new district called Eixample. Although not entirely realized, Eixample would prove a fine example, as it resulted in the demolition of the city walls, along with an expansive implementation of a street grid, wide streets to allow clean air, gardens at the center of each street block, smooth-flowing traffic and broader sunlight. Octagonal superblocks with chamfered corners for better visibility remain helpful to this day.  Following Catalonia’s resistance to Francisco Franco’s Nationalists during the Spanish Civil War, and as a result of a Nationalist victory, Catalonian autonomous institutions were abolished and the use of the Catalonian language in public was suppressed. Under Francoist Spain from 1939 to 1975, Barcelona remained Spain’s second largest city and saw both industrialization and prosperity, with an influx of workers from Spain’s poorer regions contributing to rapid urbanization. Barcelona’s hosting of the 1992 Summer Olympics provided the city with an economic jolt. Also, the 1992 Olympics was cause for the demolition of industrial buildings along the sea-front, and a replacement with 2 miles of beach. Barcelona Beach, naturally, would boost tourism going forward.

Spain’s second-most populous city behind Madrid, Barcelona is positioned between the mouths of the Llobregat and Besòs rivers. Home to over 1.6 million “Barcelonans” (native Barcelonans are known as “Catalans”), Barcelona ranks in the European Union’s top-5 cities in terms of gross GDP. One of the Mediterranean Sea’s largest metropolises, Barca harbors the Port of Barcelona, which is Europe’s busiest passenger port. Norwegian Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises and Carnival Cruises are a few examples of cruise lines that operate through the Port of Barcelona. 5.5 million international visitors traveled to Barcelona in 2011 compared to 12.4 million in 2022.  Home to eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, Barca boasts some of the world’s most amazing spectacles by way of Catalan modernista architecture. Architect of Barcelona’s most incredible art nouveau and modernista buildings, Antoni Gaudí lived in Barcelona from 1868 until his death in 1926 aged 73. The University of Barcelona, one of Spain’s oldest universities, was established in 1450. About sixty parks and seven beaches can be experienced throughout the city. Barcelona summers are warm/hot and average in the high 70s degrees Fahrenheit, while winters are mild at around 53 degrees. Rain occurs only about 78 days per year. Additional points of interest include Palau de la Música Catalana (concert hall), Gran Teatre del Liceu (performing arts theater), Palau Nacional (art museum), Palau de la Generalitat de Catalunya (historic palace / government center), Torre Glòries (business center), World Trade Center Barcelona, Temple Expiatori del Sagrat Cor (Catholic church), Venetian Towers (monument), La Rambla (street), La Barceloneta (neighborhood), Port Olimpic (marina) and Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya (racecourse). Local foods include  Canelons (a type of lasagna), Escudella i Carn d’Olla (meat and vegetable stew), Fricandó (beef stew with mushrooms), Faves a la Catalana (fava bean dish), Ànec amb peres (duck with pears), Pa amb Tomàque (bread with tomato) and Patatas Bravas (quartered potatoes and paella). Popular drinks are Cava (sparkling white wine), Vermouth, Sangria, Leche de Pantera (condensed milk, gin and water) and beer. With some background information on the area, we’re ready for hotels in Barcelona that are sure to inspire.

  1. Oh my gosh! All of these penthouses look absolutely incredible! How can you even choose which one would be the best to stay in?! Barcelona has been on  my travel bucket list for a long time, but I’ve never even considered staying in a penthouse before now, but you have me convinced. I would love to see the views you talk of!

  2. What more would I want if not to live in this pent houses. Barcelona is my most favorite city because my most favorite football club is there. I would give it my all to live in the city because I have read a lot about how awesome the city is. Awesome city and awesome houses. Seriously, this pent houses are pure luxuries and I wouldn’t mind living in one of them anytime soon. My company should post me to Barcelona branch soon and maybe, finally I can live in one of these

    1. Hi RoDerrick and thank you! Barcelona truly is a beautiful city and we’re so glad you found value in the information here. Best wishes to you and hope you are living in a penthouse like one of these very soon!

  3. I just love this site. Always giving us fresh perspective of the world’s best accommodation. From the descriptions alone, I feel like I’ve visited the place. The rooms designs are so amazing.

Maybe one day you will get us options to win a trip to these amazing places? My wishes 🙂

    Thanks once again

  4. I love article! I’m actually from Barcelona but I’m living in the U.K. now and I often travel back to see my family and friends. I’ve always wondered which hotels would have penthouses and the looks of them and area as Barcelona has many lovely spots and beautiful scenery despite being a city (near the sea or the whole view of city towards the mountain of Montjuic, further away you can even see Montserrat). I’ve travelled a lot when growing up and because of my dad’s job we got to stay in nice hotels.

I always dreamed to be able to experience this as an adult and I’m sure I’ll have one day the experience to stay in one of those with my family. I’m bookmarking your site!

Thanks for sharing this amazing list. It would have been great if there was a mention of average price per night. Cheers!

    1. Thank you Diellebee! Your comments are appreciated and recommendation is noted. Happy travels to you out there.

  5. Hi Pentrental

Where do you find all these luxury places? I’m in awe of how many there are out there. I could spends years having a great time visiting places on your site!

I’m almost afraid to share your site with the wife she’ll be ready to plan a trip right now. I’ll be like not right now babe give me a few months. But I’m going to show it to her anyway. I can’t keep this great site to myself.

    Much Success

  6. These penthouses look amazing!  This might seem strange, but every time I hear Barcelona, I think of the 1992 Olympics.  Maybe it’s because I was young, but those Olympics had a bigger impact on me than any other.  Because of that, I’ve always wanted to visit and what better place to do it than in a pent house?

  7. Barcelona is one of my favorite cities in Spain and I see new places each time I manage to get there for business or pleasure. I have never considered staying in a penthouse, but with all the options there are I am asking myself why I have not.

The cost is not that much more and the locations that you have reviewed tell me that it is time to consider the penthouse option during my next visit. The city is full of things to do and it is a less expensive place to stay at than Madrid, from my experience.

There are a plethora of options too that are worth considering. I will have to see what area of the city I am going to be working in and then come here to make a reservation. Thanks for the great tips on penthouses to stay at while in Barcelona, I love this site. It gives me so many ways to enjoy travel!

  8. The views from these penthouses are unbelievable! Barcelona is a trip of a lifetime–it makes sense to get the most beautiful and convenient lodging you can afford. I’m in love with the one you titled the unique, cozy scenic penthouse. It’s amazing and might be my dream lodging! I hope to travel to Barcelona soon.

    1. Hi Holly, it does make sense yes! Convenience and affordability are two things to look for for sure. May your Barcelona trip be an exciting one!

  9. Hello there,

Quite a great review of rental penthouses in Barcelona. Whenever I read/see or hear it mentioned, I can’t help but remember the football club and Lionel Messi.

For a football tourist, or any other for that matter, a safe and spacious penthouse would be great to locate. Your review has given a good glimpse of the exquisite places that are on offer. I like Hotel Arts the most since I’d really love the boat rides.

You mentioned 5,000 BC tombs and dwellings, kindly tell us more about who lived or was buried there? Does Barcelona have any history associated with the Old Testament’s historical accounts?

    .

    Boniface- AndroidBix

    1. Hello Boniface and glad to see you’ve found one you like and are interested in the history. The tombs date back to 5000 BC, so there probably was not a lot of historical documentation regarding who was buried there, probably just the higher-ups in society. Consider that the founding or Barcelona dates to “probably” around 230 BC, which is 4,770 years later. Great question and thanks for stopping by.

  10. Hellow dear,
Wow!! All the penthouses are fantastic. I had heard yhe name “Barcelona” many times. Hearing its name, I fall in love with it and decided to go there. Today, I fall in love with these places again. Seriously, this is an awesome city and the panthouses are also awesome. Designs of the rooms are so nice. Seeing these panthouses, I feel to stay there. Barcelona has so many lovely and beautiful spots which I want to visit.
Thanks for sharing this amazing post with us.

  11. Once again some gorgeous places to stay, but this time in Barcelona. Now, this is one of those places that has always interested me, but that I have never been to.

I love the look and sound of the Marina, but I wonder if you could recommend the best penthouse to stay in that enables one to see the most sights. In other words, I want to stay somewhere really central which is close to all the historical sites without having to travel too much.

  12. I think the reviews and pictures of the places are very catchy. You manifest the luxury and perfect, central location of the houses. I think anyone looking for options to stay in Barcelona and is not limited of finances should have a look on your option. Question: Did you also searched in airbnb if there are not better options, relation of money and luxury?

  13. wow, Barcelona is a very beautiful place, i am very impressed with all the beauty that is the beautiful city. Seeing now that you have given a list of awesome penthouse is great. I am going to be booking tight now. Almanac Barcelona is my best pick because it has all of want to do around the city. I’d like to know about the people who live here, are they good to tourists?

  15. Hi

So many beautiful penthouse that you have made the choice of which one to go for, almost impossible. Barcelona is my favourite city in Spain, full of beauty, full of culture and full of life. I do believe that when I visit Spain next  time with a group of my best friends, I could easily imagine myself staying in one of these penthouse apartments.

We have done this in the past in  Italy and I cannot see why we could not Stay in a penthouse in Spain.

Thank you for your detailed review of penthouses in Barcelona.

  16. On my way to Tenerife in the Canary Islands south of Barcelona, I stopped there for 3 days waiting for our herbal coffee shipment to arrive in the nearby pier. It was in LetsGo Sagrada Familia which was quite pricey but since the travel was funded by my boss, I didn’t care about the price. It was a very nice stay and I wish it will be repeated.

Aside from the good ambiance and the picturesque view during mornings and sunsets, I really like the people around. They’re so are so warm and smiling making you feel like you’re home. The weather there is great, not too hot and not too cold, it was just enough and very comfortable.

  17. Wow, what a great selection of penthouses on offer in Barcelona. If a whole group of people or a family are travelling together some of these really fall within the definition of “affordable luxury”. Thank you for putting together such a useful, practical and interesting list of possibilities. I will definitely bear this in mind for my next trip to Barcelona.

  18. Hi,

This is a very interesting article to read even we are not planning to rent a penthouse. I have to say that you have listed amazing penthouses anyone would be lucky to spend a night or two. It is a good thing to know about the area and close by restaurants and stores before selecting where we want to spend our vacation time. Among the penthouses you have listed in this article I liked the penthouses offered by Hotel Arts, The One Barcelona GL, and ABaC Hotel.

  19. Hi there!

Wow, these are absolutely AMAZING! These penthouses are so beautiful, and I can imagine that exploring Barcelona while living in one of these would be an absolute dream come true.

  20. Thank you for this great article about Barcelona Penthouse rentals! I was wondering about Barcelona penthouses and your article has put all the information in one please for me so I appreciate that. The header image is also really nice. I like the first Penthouse you mentioned with the nice balcony View. That would definitely be a nice place to stay. The fourth one down is also really cool. I actually like the view of that big glassy building, it would be nice to look at.

Hotel Arts has a nice, light color scheme, and it looks comfortable. Thank you for Your expertise on traveling and for inspiring me to travel. Have a great day.

  21. These are really great sites to see and I must say these are great. To say the truth, this Barcelona is a big home of great buildings and the ones you just shared here are golden. Left to me, if I can, I will try all my possible best to visit any of these penthouses if I ever visit Barcelona soon. Great places and they all brewed of elegance and greatness. Thanks so much

  22. Nice and lovely looking penthouses. Never knew you could rent a penthouse until now. Barcelona being well known for its football club will be a great place to visit and one of those penthouses will be a good choice songs to have a great view of the city. Nice job from you dear

    1. Juliet thank you so much for the kind words. Definitely Barcelona is known for its football club, and what better way to visit for a game than by staying in a penthouse!

  23. I’ve never been to Spain but it surely is on my list of the countries to visit. Pretty much during the soccer season and of course, I’ll be damned not to visit Barcelona when in Spain for obvious reasons lol. I like the rustic look interior on Industrla 158 Elxample and the price is affordable. The city view looks perfect on Marlna. Thank you for this awesome post, I’ll be back for a recap.

  24. Barcelona is definitely on my list of cities to visit in Spain. I have never considered a penthouse suite thinking they would be too expensive, but I see from your review they are reasonably priced. I like the Bellesguard suite even though it is one of the more expensive on your list. Your website is a good reference for someone traveling, you have the whole world covered. I love the title picture on your post, I see it’s not on the list. Is it a hotel?

  25. I’ve only been to Barcelona once and that was many years ago. Since then it has been on my list of cities that I would like to go back to, and this post has reinforced that wish. I loved the vibrancy of the city and walking down La Ramblas at night, not to mention all the Gaudi buildings and architecture.

These penthouses all look incredible and would be the best way to see and explore the city.

  26. Hello there! Traveling to Barcelona has not crossed my mind to be honest. But after reading your post and especially looking at the pictures, wow, it sure is a beautiful place to visit at least once in my lifetime. The view from the penthouses look unbelievable. Hopefully after COVID-19 starts to calm down a bit or perhaps a better solution is found for it, I might travel to Barcelona some time. Thanks for sharing this.
