Hotels in Cancun offer wonderful accommodations in a destination that was once a deserted island, separated from the mainland by two narrow canals. Known for its playas (beaches – white sand), clear turquoise waters, nightclubs, restaurants, bars, parks, marinas, Mayan ruins, shopping malls, watersport activities and dolphin sightings, Cancun is located on the Yucatán Peninsula’s northeastern coast, about 70 miles north of Cozumel island, and about 190 miles east of the Mexican state of Yucatán’s capital city Merida. A spring break epicenter, Cancun is otherwise a fine destination for couples, large groups or even the entire family. If you’re traveling to Cancun for spring break in particular, you’ll want to try and book your accommodation well in advance. For Cancun-bound groups, here’s a pro tip to maximize you experience. Group accommodations, as we like to preach, save on cost-per-person, so in the case of Cancun, it might be feasible/nice to take a day/few days and stay as a couple/smaller group on Isla Mujeres (island). Couples/smaller groups might break off from the larger group staying at the home-base accommodation to alternate shorter Isla Mujeres trips. At 4.3 miles long and slightly under a half-mile wide, Isla Mujeres is just about the perfect size for a mini-getaway within a getaway. Reachable via a short ferry ride by way of Ultramar transportation service, Isla Mujeres is home to a number of outstanding accommodations, playas, attractions and establishments. Isla Mujeres’ best accommodations include Casa Barco Hotel Boutique, Ixchel Beach Hotel, Elements Of The Island, Nautibeach Condos, Casa Alkimia Oceanfront, Casa Alkimia Town, Perimetral Oriente Luxury Villas, Estrella del Mar Condo, La Poza Suites, Azulea Isla Mujeres Hotel, Playa Norte Apartment, Rueda Medina La Diosa Villa, Isla Mujeres Penthouse, Francisco I. Madero Apartment, Almare Resort and Fraccionamiento Turquesa Villa, with attractions to include Playa Norte (public beach, palm tree-lined, beach chairs, restaurants, bars), Punta Sur (ecological park, beaches, lighthouse, large sculptures, path overlooking the ocean), Dolphin Discovery Isla Mujeres (swim with dolphins theme park), Parador Fotográfico (beachside observation deck, ocean views, popular place to take photos), Garrafon Natural Reef Park (theme park), Café Mogagua (coffee shop), Mango Cafe (breakfast restaurant), Playa Centro, Playa Lancheros “La casa del Tikinxic” (restaurant), Zama Beach and Lounge, Oscars Grill (restaurant), North Garden (restaurant), MUSA (underwater art museum), Soggy Peso (bar & grill), Parque de Los Sueños (water park, ocean slides, pools, zip-lines, restaurant, swim-up bar), Green Verde (Mexican restaurant), Rancho Capricho (bar & grill), Mirador Punta Sur (observation deck), La Palapa del Capitan (restaurant), Isla Brewing Company (brewery), Mayakita Restaurant (breakfast restaurant), Playa El Cocal, Hermosa Caleta (beach), Piscina del Rey (natural ocean pool) and more. The most popular ways to explore Isla Mujeres are by golf cart, scooter or bicycle, with Good Mexican (golf carts/mopeds) and BiCi Express (bicycles) being top choices for rentals. Of course, with its many fine playas and establishments, Isla Mujeres is well-suited in-and-of-itself for an extended stay, even when not traveling in a larger group. Within Cancun, main attractions include Mercado 28 (flea market, food stalls, shops), Plaza Las Americas (shopping mall), La Isla Cancún (shopping mall), Playa Delfines (white-sand beach, umbrellas, restaurants, dolphin sightings), Playa Langosta (public beach, white sand, playground, restaurants, public restrooms), Marina Puerto Cancún (shopping mall), Las Plazas Outlet Cancun (shopping mall), Gran Plaza Cancún (shopping mall), Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. Cancún (restaurant), Sky Wheel Cancun (tourist attraction), Interactive Aquarium Cancún (aquarium), Museo Maya de Cancún (Mayan museum), Playa Marlín (public beach, white sand, bathrooms, showers, nearby restaurants), Captain Hook Cancun (tourist attraction), Parque Ecológico Kabah (ecological park, vegetation, wildlife, running paths, playground), El Rey Archaeological Zone (250 AD Mayan ruins), Torre Escénica del Embarcadero de Cancún (tourist attraction tower, rotating observation deck), Santuario Maria Desatadora de Nudos (Catholic church) and Zona Arqueológica de El Meco (archaeological site). About a 2-hour drive from Cancun, Chichén Itzá and Tulum are home to some of the world’s most fascinating Mayan ruins. Located on the city’s southside, Cancun International Airport is the city’s main airport, while R1 and R2 bus routes are the most popular for tourists (hotel zone/downtown). Good to know is that Uber rideshare does operate in Cancun, with service encompassing the airport. Cancun’s professional football club is Cancún F.C., who play at Estadio Olímpico Andrés Quintana Roo (capacity 20,000), not far from the hotel zone. When in Cancun, it’s best to try and avoid tap water, especially for drinking, and even when brushing teeth. Apart from restaurants/bars, be wary of ice in beverages. Cancun’s beautiful beaches can be deceiving in a way, as they may at times have a strong undertow. Though Cancun is generally a safe place, you should be wary, especially at night, in places outside of the Hotel Zone (Zona Hotelera) or Isla Mujeres. It’s advisable to avoid the city’s inland outskirts altogether. Just in case, emergency call numbers in Cancun are 911 / 089. In Cancun, currency is the Mexican peso, cars travel on the right-hand side and the drinking age is 18 years old. Keep in mind that nightclub drinks can be expensive, so some form of pre-gaming might be best. Cancun top events include Cancun Jazz Festival, Riviera Maya Jazz Festival (Playa del Carmen – 40 miles from Cancun), Crash My Playa, Out of the Blue Festival, Dead Ahead Festival, Inceptionfest (spring break music festival), Paradise Blue Festival, The Sands Rocks, Island Time Music Festival, Cancun Jumpoff and Spring Equinox at Chichen Itza. Hotels in Cancun are some of Mexico’s best accommodations. Before we get to hotels in Cancun, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.
Prior to European arrival, the Cancun-area’s Mayan inhabitants referred to the area as Nizuc, meaning ‘promontory’ or ‘point of grass’. The name Cancun derives from the Mayan name kàan kun, which translates to ‘nest of snakes’ or ‘place of the golden snake’ (even though snakes are essentially non-existent in Cancun). Following the Spanish conquest of Yucatán circa the early-16th century, the Mayan population was largely decimated due to warfare, disease and famine. Smaller Mayan settlements survived only on the islands of Isla Mujeres and Cozumel. Apart from the Mayans and Spanish conquistadors, Cancun’s history is largely void until the 20th century. A planned city, Cancun developed to foster tourism at the onset of the 1970s. At that time, Isla Cancan had only three residents, who were Don José de Jesús Lima Gutiérrez’s coconut plantation caretakers. These caretakers lived on Isla Mujeres. The nearby fishing village and military base of Puerto Juárez had a population of around 120. Tourism investors were reluctant to gamble on the unknown and uninhabited area. As such, Cancun’s first nine hotels were financed by the Bank of Mexico. Playa Blanca, which became a Blue Bay Hotel and eventually Temptation Resort, was the first hotel built. Throughout its recent history, Cancun has transformed rapidly from a fishing village into a world-renowned tourist destination.
Founded on April 20, 1970, Cancun today is home to around 630,000 ‘Cancunenses’. The Mexican state of Quintana Roo’s most populous city, Cancun is also the seat of the municipality of Benito Juárez. Cancun is one of Mexico’s easternmost points and is just north of the Riviera Maya resort area. The city’s highest elevation is 30 feet. In 2023, 21 million tourists helped Cancun’s total GDP reach $18.5 billion. Historically, Cancun has accounted for about 15% of total international spring break travel. Home to a tropical climate, Cancun remains hot throughout the year, and benefits from sea breezes that generally keep the temperature below 100 degrees Fahrenheit. Rainy season occurs between August and December, with dry season commencing from December through April. Hurricane season lasts from June through November. Sea temperatures are always warm thanks to the Yucatan current from the south. Additional points of interest include Coco Bongo (night club), The City Nightclub, Puerto Juárez (Isla Mujeres access point), Playa Tortugas, Luxury Avenue (boutique mall), San Miguelito Ruins, Kukulcan Boulevard (resorts, shopping malls, restaurants), Fuente del Ceviche (fountain), Punta Cancun LightHouse and Estadio de Béisbol Beto Ávila. Local foods include fajitas, tacos, burritos, carnitas, empanadas, guacamole and various seafoods. Popular drinks are margaritas, mojitos, daiquiris, piña coladas and the banana monkey (chilled drink, made with coffee liquor, banana, chocolate and coconut). With some background information on the area, we’re ready for hotels in Cancun that are sure to help make for an exciting trip.

So there they are, hotels in Cancun that will help make for an incredible trip. We hope you have found this information valuable and most importantly, that you enjoy your time in Mexico!
Awesome post! My family and I had a very great time at Casa Tortugas! The hotel is so lovely, with excelent location and also an amazing staff! The rooms are very big and comfortable, with everything we needed. The location is also great, near restaurants, a grocery store and the beach, and just a few minutes by bus from other good places. The view from the pool is really wonderful. I would recommend this place to anyone who wants a calm and an amazing place to stay!
Jordan thank you so much for the insights and recommendation! Glad to hear that you has an amazing experience at Casa Tortugas.
Hi,
These places look amazing. I spent some time in the Riviera de Maya a few years ago. We stayed in a big resort, but we always said that if we ever went back we would go self catered and be more independent to enjoy the are in a different way. I think one of these places would be perfect. I like the look of the Hard Rock Hotel to give us all the options.
Hi Tom. Thank you for the comments! Glad to hear that you found one to your liking in Hard Rock.
I really like the le blanc spa that you have mentioned here and to me, it seems to be one of the brwsr places I could possibly stay here in meixo if I ever visit. Though it is not really too far from the states but then, I just visited Cuba some years back and I’m not looking forward to exploring anywhere near for now. Thanks so much for doing this much details about the best hotels in Mexico. I might try to give it consideration sometime soon or suggest to anyone visiting. Thankd
Rodarrick thank you for commenting and glad you are considering a Mexico trip!
It’s actually the first time I’m hearing about Cancun Mexico. I wouldn’t have believed that such beautiful aces can be in Mexico. In the movies, Mexico is always depicted as a ghetto. I think I need to visit someday and for this reason, I will have to bookmark this post. I really fell in love with the Sandos Cancun Lifestyle Resort when I saw that beach beside it. Thanks for giving good information here. Cheers!
Henderson really? That’s awesome! Cheers and happy travels 🙂

Thank you Rodarrick and stop back anytime!
Wow, all terrific places! I want to visit Cancun someday, and all of these look like great suggestions for a truly relaxing and memorable vacation. Le Blanc Spa Resort looks lovely, and so does the Fiesta Americana Cancun Villas. It’s the kind of vibe and view that tourist will enjoy whether day or night.
Thank you Ron! You have a good eye for some great options here
Wow! I have once heard about the Cancun city of mexico and how beautiful it is. I love. Entertainment and exploration always and in think that this city is the best place for me. There are a lot of 5star hotels there and I can’t really wait to have a visit to this really amazing city and have fun. I am a lover of nice hotels and I admire them a lot. The list here is quite awesome and I cant wait to visit them.
Willy thank you for the comments. Cancun is a place for entertainment and adventure for sure. Happy travels out there!
Oh, this is really thrilling. I have been to Mexico before but not in Cancun. I am very eager to visit that place and see all its wonders. It must very a very good place to go to. Seeing all the nice hotels there and all the places near it is very great. I already have plans for my next trip so maybe I would put travelling to Cancun in my schedule. Are the locals very friendly?
John that sounds excellent! Locals generally are great, but don’t wander too far outside of the hotel and tourist zones.
Wow! Visiting this canum in mexico would definitely be on my bucket list of the things I need to do anytime I visit the mexico. Thanks so much for this information provided on the best hotels to explore in mexico. Wow! They all look rather elegant and beautiful. I really wish to explore any of this places. They all look like top class places and a night here would be great
Tracy Cancun is a great place to explore for sure! Happy travels out there 🙂
What absolutely gorgeous rentals! I don’t know that I would ever want to leave the resort!
I really love how detailed you were about each resort you talked about, I feel like I know exactly what I can expect before even calling the resort. It was very helpful to know which perks and accommodations came with each suit, and also what was near by. I found it helpful that you included EVERYTHING that was near by, including convenience stores! You never know when you need to pop in for a quick item.
I also really liked the range in prices, it made it easier for me to narrow down which resort has the amenities I am looking for at a cost I’m happy to pay. Thanks for all the time and effort you put into this post!
Michelle thank you for the kind comments! Great you found value in the post 🙂
WOW love your site man, i didnt realise anything like this was inside my budget range, but this has opened my eyes some of these are ridiculously cheap when split with a few friends and the places are stunning why would you not. i am literally going to chat with a few friends now to see if thety are keen haha . Do you only do Cancun ones?
Hi thehealthytradie and thanks for sharing with your friends. Not only Cancun ones no and you can find the others on the site 🙂
Hello,
Excellent review of Cancun, Mexico hotels and resorts.
A few years ago we ( my husband and I) decided to fly to Cancun. We stayed at Villa del Palmar resort. It is a beautiful resort, and I thought that it is the best resort in Cancun. Your post changed my mind; there are a lot of charming resorts and hotels. I love how detailed you were about each of them, and what kind of accommodations and convenience stores are around. Also, I liked the prices.
Thank you again for an excellent article. We will use your advice for the next trip to Cancun, Mexico.
jpaliskis thank you for the comments and glad you liked the post!
Good topic. Cancun is a very popular destination and this article provides good information about places to stay. It’s helpful to know what amenities the hotel offers. It’s also great to know what’s nearby and how far it is to certain destinations. A couple of the listings seem to be missing some of that info though. It would be nice to see more pictures to help decide where you may want to stay. Overall, very nice.
Thank you Crispy and noted
What beautiful places! I have been to Mexico a few times, and have always searched out lodgings that were quite reasonable. Places that cost as much as these have been for the most part beyond my budget.
However, will be doing another trip to Mexico soon, and now feel that I can afford to be a bit more extravagant. Actually,I really like the idea of traveling with a group, because then you can divide up the cost and make it more affordable.
You have provided a good service by offering this information to the prospective traveler. Thanks!
Fran thank you so much and happy travels!
Planning a trip to Mexico after this Covid-19 Pandemic and Cancun is absolutely the city I want to visit, thanks for your sharing on the places to stay in the city. I have look for other reviews, but they are not as thorough as yours. You did a great job by offering this information to the active traveler. Thanks again!
Zac thank you for saying!
I’ve never been to Cancun but now I sure as hell feel like visiting! So many of these places look absolutely stunning. The colours, the photos, everything makes me want to go. You’ve offered so much useful information into what can be found in these hotels and where they are situated that it’s really easy to tell my favourite ones apart. Thanks a lot for this post!
The post gives the choice of an array of hotels and apartments with some great images and a lot of information about the accommodation and the area surrounding each property. The information regarding the facilities in each of the different types of accommodation was really helpful and well presented.
Another nice part of this post was the fact that there were such a wide range of prices to choose from. I think Mexico is still generally considered pretty good value and Cancun is a well established resort now. Some of those pools and terraces look so inviting.
Nice to see working links to different restaurants, bars and nightlife venues and also to the many trips that are on offer in the resort. I would imagine that for most of us going to a resort for the first time, having this sort of information in advance is a great advantage. It helps in the planning of what to do while in resort.
After reading this post I definitely want to go to Cancun.
