Hotels in Cape Town offer excellent accommodations in a destination nicknamed “Mother City”. Known for its iconic mountain, cable cars, beaches, beach penguins, harbor seals, surfing, whale watching, shark diving, museums, hiking trails, viewpoints, waterfalls, gorges, ravines, gardens, parks, squares, pavilions, promenades, port, bays, shopping malls, spas, salons, restaurants, bars, farmers’ markets, coffee shops and wine estates, Cape Town is located on Africa’s southwestern coastline. Cape Town’s two main bays are Table Bay (Atlantic side) and False Bay (southerly), with False Bay being about 6 °C warmer due to its proximity to the Indian Ocean’s Agulhas Current. Surrounding Cape Town are Table Mountain National Park (nature reserve, penguins, forest, beaches, walking trails), Boulders Beach (sandy, boardwalk, free-roaming penguins), Cape of Good Hope (protected wildlife reserve, picnic spots, walking trails), Cape Point Nature Reserve (national park) and New Cape Point Lighthouse to the south, and Jonkershoek Nature Reserve (mountains, hiking, biking, waterfalls, swimming) to the east. Within the city, main attractions include V&A Waterfront (shopping mall), Kirstenbosch National Botanical Garden, Cavendish Square (shopping mall), DHL Stadium, Mojo Market, Castle of Good Hope, Green Point Park, Artscape Theatre Centre (performing arts theater), CTICC (Cape Town International Convention Centre), The Watershed (market), Baxter Theatre Centre (performing arts theater), Foresters Arms (restaurant), Iziko Bo-Kaap Museum, Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, Newlands Rugby Stadium, Sea Point Pavilion, Newlands Forest (national forest, boardwalk trail, dirt paths, streams), The Bungalow (restaurant), Hudsons The Burger Joint (Claremont), Newlands Cricket Ground, Century City Conference Centre, Table Mountain, Lion’s Head Hiking Trail, Upper Cable Car Station (mountain cable car) and Kirstenbosch Gardens Concert Stage (live music venue). Cricket and rugby arguably are Mother City’s most beloved sports, while Cape Town City FC is the city’s professional football club. Cape Town’s main airport is Cape Town International Airport. Good to know is that Uber rideshare does operate in Cape Town, with service encompassing the airport. 4 rail lines with a top speed of 56 mph make up the Metrorail Western Cape, the city’s network of commuter and suburban rail services. Good to know is that South Africa can sometimes experience rolling blackouts, known as load-shedding, when the power will go out for around 2 hours at a time. Load-shedding is caused when power demand exceeds the power supply. A monopoly on the power supply, outdated power facilities and worker strikes can all contribute to power shortages. To counter load-shedding, Cape Town’s best accommodations (below) will have a back-up power supply/generator, so that you won’t have to worry about the power going out (at least not at your accommodation). During load-shedding, cellphone towers should continue to operate normally, as they too should have a backup power supply. Be sure to keep your cellphone charged and keep in mind that ATMs will not be operable during load-shedding. The smartphone app EskomSePush (ESP), which should be available in your phone’s app store, is a great resource for seeing Cape Town’s load-shedding schedule in advance. In Cape Town, tourist areas generally are quite safe, though nearby townships, or “flats”, located southeast of the central business district, should be avoided due to poverty and gang activity. Tap water generally is perfectly fine for brushing teeth. The city’s currency is the South African rand, the drinking age is 18 years old and cars travel on the left-hand side. Top events include The Sun Met Horse Race, Cape Town Carnival, Cape Town International Jazz Festival, Smalltown Beat, Rocking the Daisies, Shakespeare at Maynardville Open-Air Theatre, SA Women’s Open, Two Oceans Marathon, Cape Town Cycle Tour, Cape Epic and TECHSPO Cape Town. Hotels in Cape Town are some of Africa’s best accommodations. Before we get to hotels in Cape Town, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.
Discovered at Peers Cave in Cape Town’s coastal suburb of Fish Hoek, archaeological evidence suggests that humans have inhabited the Cape Town area for at least 12,000 years. Written history of the region does not exist until an account by Portuguese mariner and explorer Bartolomeu Dias, who, in 1488, became Europe’s first navigator to round Africa’s southern tip. Dias first named the area “Cape of Storms”, which was later renamed to “Cape of Good Hope” by Portugal’s King John II. On his way to India circa 1497, legendary Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama recorded his sighting of the Cape of Good Hope. The Battle of Salt River on March 1, 1510 between the Portuguese Empire and the indigenous ǃUriǁʼaekua nomadic tribe resulted in a decisive ǃUriǁʼaekua victory. Prior to the advent of gunpowder, the Portuguese arrived armed with crossbows, spears and swords, while the ǃUriǁʼaekua, anticipating the Portuguese’s advances inland, awaited with poisoned arrows, spears, stones and cattle shields. Table Bay became an important stop-over for late-16th century European ships traveling to the Indies. Ships, mainly Portuguese, but also English, Dutch, French and Danish, traded iron, copper and tobacco with the region’s Khoekhoe clans in exchange for meat and other traveling provisions. Dutch navigator Jan van Riebeeck of the United East India Company established a way-station at Fort de Goede Hoop, which would later become Castle of Good Hope, in 1652. Van Riebeeck and his successors introduced a range of agricultural plants such as grapes, apples, citrus, potatoes, ground nuts and cereals. In 1795, Britain captured Cape Town, though it was returned to the Dutch by way of treaty circa 1803. The January 1806 Battle of Blaauwberg between the United Kingdom and the Batavian Republic and the First French Empire resulted in a British victory, with the United Kingdom subsequently controlling the Dutch Cape Colony throughout the Napoleonic Wars. In 1814, the Anglo-Dutch Treaty granted Britain possession of the Cape Colony, or Cape of Good Hope, indefinitely. Uniting with three other colonies, Britain would control Cape Colony from 1806 until 1910. Throughout the 1800s, Cape Colony’s territory expanded substantially. Britain engaged in nine wars with the ethnic Xhosa Kingdom on the colony’s eastern frontier. In 1849, the Convict crises, caused by Britain’s prospect of creating a penal colony in the area, were marked by civil upheaval and protests. Carrying 288 “ticket of leave” Irish convicts, The Neptune merchant ship sought to moor at Cape Town in 1849. Ultimately, the Convict crisis proved successful for Cape Town’s protestors, as they were able to thwart the penal colony system to places such as Hobart, Tasmania. These events triggered a nationalistic sense of self-government, and the Cape attained its own parliament in 1854, followed by a locally accountable Prime Minister in 1872. Britain introduced more plant species such as rooikrans and eucalyptus during the 1850s-60s. Cape Government Railways built the area’s first railway line circa 1859. In 1867, diamonds were discovered in Northern Cape Province’s Griqualand West area. The 1886 Witwatersrand Gold Rush flooded South Africa with immigrants. In 1895, Cape Town’s first public power station, the Graaff Electric Lighting Works, opened. The Second Boer War (October 11, 1899 – May 31, 1902) between the United Kingdom and the South African Republic, Orange Free State and Cape Boers resulted in a British victory, dissolution of the South African Republic and the Orange Free State and the Treaty of Vereeniging, which officially ended the Second Boer War. The Treaty granted self-government to the Boer colonies. On May 31 1910, the Union of South Africa was created, with Cape Town becoming the Union’s legislative capital. Johannesburg overtook Cape Town as the Union of South Africa’s largest city in 1936. 480 acres of developed land were added to Cape Town’s City Bowl area circa 1945. In 1950, Cape Town ‘s new apartheid government introduced the Group Areas Act, which classified and segregated urban areas according to race. The District Six suburb was declared whites-only in 1965, housing was demolished therein, and residents were forcibly removed, mostly to the Cape Flats area (remember to avoid). Since the end of the 17th century, the area’s Robbin Island had been used not as a penal colony, but as a place of incarceration for political prisoners. One of Robben Island’s most infamous prisoners was anti-apartheid activist, lawyer and eventual president Nelson Mandela, who served 18 of his 27 years of imprisonment therein. On April 27, 1994, Cape Town’s first democratic election was held. Following apartheid, Cape Town experienced economic growth, mainly from international investment and tourism, though the city has been affected negatively by water and power shortages, turf wars and gang activity outside of tourist areas.
South Africa’s capital and oldest city, Cape Town is home to around 430,000 “Capetonians”. With its Portuguese roots, over 80% of Mother City’s population identifies as Christian. Cape Town welcomes around 3 million visitors annually. Food and fashion retailer Woolworths is headquartered in the city. Over 3,300 feet high, Table Mountain, with its characteristic flat top, is one of the world’s most distinguishable mountains, accessible by cableway or on foot. Around 2,200 different plant species exist on Table Mountain. Many types of Table Mountain’s proteas, or flowering plants known also as sugarbushes, are found nowhere else in the world. As introduced by Europeans throughout its history, Cape Town’s biodiversity is one of the world’s highest-ranking. Apart from penguins and seals, otters, ostriches and baboons are some of the area’s other types of wildlife. Although Great White Sharks are not as abundant as they once were, wintertime is still considered the best time to go Shark Cage Diving due to better visibility. A warm, Mediterranean climate accounts for mild winters and warm summers. Similar to Melbourne, Cape Town may experience rapid weather changes during winter months, which last from June to September. Aside from Table Mountain and other peaks, Cape Town is absent from snow and frost during winter. For much of the year, Mother City’s high temperatures average above 70s degrees Fahrenheit, with cool to warm evenings. Additional points of interest include Robben Island Museum, St. George’s Cathedral, Grand Parade (square), Central Business District (City Bowl), Devil’s Peak, Signal Hill, Clifton Beach, Sandy Bay (nudist beach), Cape Floristic Region, Simon’s Town, Cape Town City Hall, Houses of Parliament, Port of Cape Town and University of Cape Town. A common cooking method in Cape Town is barbecue, especially when the power goes out. Local foods include various seafoods of course, the Gatsby sandwich (submarine sandwich filled with French fries, known as chips, and choice of fillings / sauces), Bobotie (baked spiced minced meat, topped with egg, French fries, various other fillings – steak, fish, calamari, chicken, sausage), koeksisters (cake-like pastry), Malva pudding and Cape Brandy Pudding. Beer and of course wine are popular alcoholic beverages. Equipped with some background knowledge on the area, we’re ready for hotels in Cape Town that will help make for a memorable experience.

So there they are, hotels in Cape Town that will help make for an exciting trip. We hope you have found this information valuable and most of all, that you enjoy your time in South Africa!
The view from 7 Main Drive is breathtaking. Going over the skyline and looking into the water is amazing. I don’t think I could leave the deck. But while I’d be in Cape Town, I’d love to check out these nearby attractions at places like Urban Park, Cape Town Stadium, and the Golf Club. Further, the price is pretty cheap, at $51/night per person. You really can’t beat that.
Thank you very much Todd! You really can’t beat that, agree 🙂
Decisions, decisions. I did not expect to find so many penthouses to select from in the Capetown area. I believe that my family and I could be happy staying in any one of these penthouses. I love the ocean views! Thank you for sharing which ones had exceptionally high demand. Most of the time, I prefer last minute vacations.
Thank you for sharing all of the information that you did. It will be helpful as I plan my holiday..
Hi Sondra and thank you for the comments! You and your family would be very happy staying in one of these penthouses for sure 🙂
I’ve been hearing a lot of beautiful things about how vibrant Cape town is. The culture and people depict the place so well. It’s good to know that there are lots of option in terms of place where you might want to spend your vacay in Cape Town. The array of penthouse you suggested looks elegant and comfy at the same time. My top choices would be the Bayview Penthouse which is overlooking the ocean. It looks peaceful and tranquil knowing you’ll wake up looking at a serene view. The other one would be Penthouse Harbor Bridge just because it looks modern and bringing my teens wouldn’t be a hassle. Thanks for all these recommendation. I hope one time we can arrange an unforgettable vacation at Cape town.
MissusB it’s nice to see you again! Bayview Penthouse and Penthouse Harbour Bridge are both fine choices 🙂
Loving your website. The view from the Medburn Road Penthouse looks spectacular. Being close to so many amenities is also appealing, especially the airport only being 12 miles away.
I have never been to South Africa but a friend of mine is from there and it sounds like a beautiful place to visit. With the availability of such nice accomodations, it is high on my list of places to travel to.
Thanks for the great article.
Thank you Mike! Glad to see you found your choice in Medburn Road Penthouse. Happy travels 🙂
First off I love your site design, it is more than welcome, or, shall I dare say, alluring. That banner is everything! This is very nice, I mean very very nice. I have to reference this in the future. Is this just for this particular location or you are having more penthouse rentals later in different states and countries? Also, are considering working with travel agents that offer package deals for travel and stay? This would be so great for our clients.
Thank you very much Shamane! Really glad you like the website design and always stay tuned for more penthouse options.
Thank you so much for the beautiful review of the Cape Town area apartments.I am actually planning to go on holiday there with the family at the end of August and we were wondering if it would be better to stay in a hotel or rent an apartment. Reading your description definitely made me think an apartment would be better and with everything we need. Especially the Medbrun View Penthouse looks amazing.
Thank you so much for opening my eyes to the different possibilities even on a holiday.
Barbara thank you for the kind comments! May your Cape Town trip be a lovely one 🙂
I like the ocean view of these penthouses for rent, it’s so relaxing and I guess with that benefit alone the price you’re paying is really worth it. I’m sure our team members will like them as well. We all love the view of the sea and the blue horizon.
Before this year ends, our group will be coming over South Africa for a business expansion and I will use this list of yours as a reference for finding a place to stay, all company-sponsored. Thanks for the list, I will check them one by one to see what’s fitted for our group’s needs.
Excellent Gomer! Thank you very much for stopping by and checking all the options out thoroughly.
All the penthouse you recommend looks classy and elegant with its modem interiors. Renting one for a vacation will be cost efficient if shared with friends or family members. The culture and people depict the place so well. It’s good to know that there are lots of options in terms of the place where you might want to spend your vacay in Cape Town. The array of penthouse you suggested looks elegant and comfy at the same time.
I love Ocean views! My top choice would be the Bayview Penthouse which is overlooking the Ocean. It looks peaceful and tranquil knowing you’ll wake up looking at a serene view. I believe that my family and I could be happy staying in any one of these penthouses.
Thanks for showing all these beautiful penthouses. All of them have a very incredible view.
Hi Nasrin and thank you for the comments! Bayview Penthouse really is a good choice, one that you will love for sure.
South Africa has always been a country of great amusement to me in the African states and if I were to visit, I would really love to explore any of these penthouses. They are just a beauty to behold and a pure haven of tranquil serenity with an ambience of elegance and beauty. All the penthouses on this list are all awesome but I think I prefer the look of the 15 Views Penthouse. It should be a delight to see an array of sights while enjoying one’s privacy. Great post

this is a really nice post on the best penthouses one can find in Cape town. I’ve been looking to travel to South Africa anytime soon as I have heard one can have alot of fun at very affordable prices. All this hotels are really but if I am to pick, I’d prefer the Victoria campus bay if I’m travelling with my girlfriend. The design looks really modern and sleek.
Henderson thank you so much. May your trips with your girlfriend be amazing!
Cape town is always in the list of every traveler. I respect and love Nelson Mandela so visiting the Robben Island Museum is my dream where he spent 18 years when it was a prison.
15 Views Penthouse is the one I am interested with since its nearby Robben Island Museum and the information you share on “What’s Around?” is super helpful. Being a traveler I often visit your site and I love it. The images you share are very helpful. Thanks for saving people time and money.
Much Success!
Paul
Thank you for the comments Paul! 15 Views Penthouse is a great choice.
This is good information to know as I have a business colleague in Capetown, and I may be traveling there soon. Also I have another business associate here in the USA who is from South Africa and we spoke about the area the other day over lunch. This is good timing.
These are wonderful properties which you have reviewed at a most reasonable price. You have presented a variety of choices based on a person’s specific needs at the time.
The views from all of these properties are excelent and for what you get in amenities the prices are most affordable and well priced. I appreciate this information as it will assist me in my trip to South Africa.
Thank you Joseph! Glad to hear you found value in the post. All the best.
Wow, thanks for this informative post. I’m into visa processing and I do suggest places for individual and companies to stay when traveling. Seeing this post have given me better options on penthouses to suggest to then. These penthouses are quite affordable I must say. I’ll certainly suggest these penthouses first before any other, and someday I myself would come visiting.
Thank you Dane!

Cape Town is no doubt a beautiful city, an attraction to tourists and the desired haven for holidaymakers. The beautiful review of the hotels in Cape Town makes the idea of going there for one’s next holiday a welcoming one. The last there I was there with my family on holidays, we stayed in one of the beautiful wine estates. With the information I am getting from this review, I am going to consider a hotel for our lodging next time. Thanks. Debbie.
Great points Debbie. Hotels in Cape Town make for an excellent idea for holiday or vacation. Wine estates sound wonderful and make sense since wine is so prevalent in the area. Thanks for your considerations and happy travels!

I read about Robben Island Museum in “The 5AM Club” by Robin Sharma. He briefly tells the story of how Nelson Mandela grew his power while in prison, opening himself to forgiving his jailors, rather than condemn them. He also writes about the vineyards around Cape Town and the excellent wine they produce. I didn’t even know South Africa made wine!
