Hotels in Munich

Munich Hotels

Hotels in Munich provide excellent accommodations in a city nicknamed “Village of a Million People”.  Also spelled München, Munich is known for its parks, palaces, museums, event venues, shopping malls, breweries, beer gardens, Bavarian restaurants, lederhosen (leather trousers), dirndl (feminine dress), football and, of course, Oktoberfest celebration. Bavaria’s capital, Munich is located in southeastern Germany, about 90 miles northwesterly of the Austrian city Salzburg. Flowing through Munich center, The Isar river is sourced by the Bavarian Alps’ Karwendel mountain range. At Munich’s very center, medieval Old Town, the city’s oldest area, is a must-see with its flagship stores, boutiques, Bavarian costumes, crowds gathering at central Marienplatz square, neo-Gothic architecture and beer gardens. 60 miles southwesterly of Munich (about a 1 hour and 20 minute drive), Zugspitze is a popular mountain peak that is home to a ski resort and cable car rides. Within the city, top attractions include Marienplatz (plaza), English Garden (park), Hellabrunn Zoo (zoo), Deutsches Museum (technology museum),  Nymphenburg Palace (castle), pep Einkaufscenter Neuperlach (shopping mall), Stachus (plaza), Olympia Shopping Center (shopping mall), Pasing Arcaden (shopping mall), Munich Residenz (castle), Riem Arcaden (shopping mall), Augustiner Bräustuben (Bavarian restaurant / brewery), Wildpark Poing (wildlife park), Messe München (convention center), Biergarten am Chinesischen Turm (beer garden), Westpark (park), Hirschgarten (park / beer garden), Flaucher (park), Munich Olympic Stadium (stadium), Pinakothek der Moderne (art museum), Bavaria Filmstadt (theme park), V-Markt (hypermarket), Circus Krone (circus), Motorworld Munich (event venue), Sendlinger Tor (historical landmark / 14th century gate & towers), Backstage Kulturzentrum (event venue), Paulaner am Nockherberg (brewpub), Ostpark (park), MS Utting on bridge Lagerhausstrasse (gastropub), Pflanzen-Kölle Gartencenter GmbH & Co. KG München (garden center), Augustiner Schützengarten (beer garden), Münchner Freiheit (tourist attraction), Moosacher Paradies (restaurant) and Deutsches Museum Verkehrszentrum (museum).  Additional Bavarian Alp ski destinations are Rosshütte, Katzenkopf Leutasch, Ehrwalder Wettersteinbahnen, Innsbruck – Nordkette, Speicherteich Grubigläcke and Kandahar-Abfahrt, with accommodations to include Hotel am Badersee, Ferienhaus Badersee, Haus Florian, Gästehaus Angela and Eibsees Chalet. One of the world’s best man-made river surfing spots, Eisbach wave can be found at the Englischer Garten’s (English Garden’s) southern edge. Legalized in 2010, river surfing at the Eisbach wave is permitted only for experienced surfers. Winners of 33 national and 6 Champions League titles, world-renowned FC Bayern Munich plays at Allianz Arena on the city’s far northeasterly side. The world’s largest Volksfest. or “peoples’ festival”, is Oktoberfest, which, from mid-to-late September to the first Sunday in October, draws about 6 million revelers. Celebrated at the Theresienwiese (square) near the Deutsches Museum Verkehrszentrum and Bavaria Statue, Oktoberfest can be found on the city’s central-west side. Good to know when attending Oktoberfest is that there is no need to buy tickets, though you should plan on arriving early. Make sure to bring enough cash, and keep in mind that tips are greatly appreciated. An Oktoberfest beer costs about €12.50 to €15 ($13.50 to $16.25) and is typically only sold in a large, 1-liter (not pint!) glass known as a Maß (pronounced mahs). Wine is also available and is most commonly served in a half-liter glass known as a Halben Liter. “Prost!” (cheers!) “Wiese” (meadow) and “Wiesn” (Oktoberfest) are particularly good German words to keep in mind for the festival. Of course, if you plan on attending Oktoberfest, you’ll want to try and book accommodations well in advance. Germany’s most expensive city, Munich largely shuts down on Sundays except for church services. Bavarians tend to be reserved, though are generally outstanding people who speak at least some English. In Munich, currency is the Euro, the drinking age is 16 years old for beer and 18 for liquor, and cars travel on the right-hand side of the road. Apart from Oktoberfest, Munich top events include Filmfest München (film festival), Munich Opera Festival, Munich Biennale, Oben Ohne Open Air, Summer Tollwood, Kocherlball, Frühlingsfest, Auer Dult, Gasteig, Starkbierfest, Superbloom Festival, Greenfields Open Air Festival, Theatron Festival, Echelon! Festival (Bad Aibling, Bavaria) and Munich Christmas Market. Hotels in Munich are some of Germany’s best accommodations. Before we get to hotels in Munich, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.

In reference to 8th-century Benedictine-order monks, who once ran a monastery in Munich’s Old Town area, the name “Munich” derives from the Middle-High German term meaning, “to the monks”. Once a prehistoric trade route, the river Isar allowed Munich to develop into one of Bronze-Age-Europe’s largest raft ports, with excavated Munich settlements dating back four millennia. In Munich’s southeast Ramersdorf-Perlach borough, Iron Age Celtic settlements have been discovered. Connecting the Bavarian town of Augsburg with Salzburg, the ancient Roman road Via Julia passed just south of Munich, through the towns of Baierbrunn and Gauting. Also excavated, a Roman settlement appears to have existed in the northeast Denning neighborhood. After the Roman era, the Munich area was populated by Baiuvarii, or Bavarians, with the first Christian church being built in Fröttmanning circa 815 AD. In order to control the salt trade, The Duke of Saxony and Bavaria’s Henry the Lion have been considered as founders of Munich at around the mid-12th century. Shards of 11th-century vessels, however, found in 2012 at Marienhof Square near Marienplatz, may point to an earlier founding date than that of the officially recognized date, June 14, 1158. St. Peter’s Church, therefore, also may have been built earlier. Regardless of Munich’s true founding date is that upstream, near modern Old Town, Henry the Lion built a new toll bridge, a customs house and a coin market. Cistercian-German churchman Otto of Freising, in protest of the new toll bridge and through his connections with the Holy Roman Empire, eventually was awarded a third of the toll bridge’s income. Munich received city status and fortification in 1175. Subsequently, through a falling-out with Roman Emperor Frederick Barbarosa (Otto of Freising’s uncle), Henry the Lion was exiled in 1180. Not surprisingly, Munich was given to the Bishop of Freising following Henry’s exile. Red-headed Otto I Wittelsbach, marking the beginning of an 800-year House of Wittelsbach Bavarian dynasty, became Duke of Bavaria in 1156. A native of Munich, Duke Louis IV was elected German king in 1314, and Holy Roman Emperor in 1328. Louis IV granted Munich a salt monopoly, which naturally contributed to the city’s growth. About a third of Munich was destroyed by fire on February 13, 1327, and in 1349 the Black Death further ravaged Munich, along with Bavaria as a whole. In 1385, the first buildings of the Munich Residenz, or royal palace, were erected. Gothic arts revived Munich during the 15th century, a period when Old Town expanded, and the Frauenkirche Gothic church was built in just 20 years. In 1506, following the Landshut War of Succession between Bavaria-Munich and Bavaria-Landshut / County Palatine of the Rhine, through which Bavaria-Munich arose victorious, Munich became the sole capital of Bavaria. A House of Wittelsbach Renaissance movement saw to the Antiquarium (a collection of Greek and Roman antiquities) being installed in the Munich Residenz, and a court orchestra being established, which prompted the city’s brief nickname as “German Rome”. Munich’s Hofbräuhaus, established solely for the purpose of supplying beer to the Bavarian court, was built for brewing brown beer on September 27, 1589 by Bavarian Duke Wilhelm the 5th. The Catholic League was founded in the city circa 1609. Around the middle of the Thirty Years’ War (1618–1648), Munich was occupied briefly by Gustav II Adolph of Sweden. Bubonic plague struck again in 1634, killing a third of the city’s population. Throughout the 18th century, the House of Wittelsbach continued to hold power, with Munich becoming an important center of Baroque life. German nobleman Charles Theodore, or Karl Theodor, of the House of Wittelsbach’s Suizbach branch, inherited Bavarian lands in 1777. Notably around the time of the American Revolution, Theodore invited Colonial Massachusetts-born British physicist, inventor and lieutenant-colonel of the King’s American Dragoons (a British provincial military unit raised for Loyalist service) Count Rumford Benjamin Thompson to Munich in order to implement “social reforms”. Additionally, the Bavarian army, established in 1682, was to be restructured. Karl Theodor and Count Rumford demolished the city’s fortifications. As a result of their being forced to live in newly built workhouses, Munich’s residents, across multiple trades, decided to build a new community outside the city walls in 1793. Through an alliance with Napoleonic France, the Kingdom of Bavaria was formed in 1806, with Munich remaining its capital. Maximilian I Joseph of the House of Wittelsbach’s Palatinate-Birkenfield-Zweibrücken branch became the Kingdom’s first king. Maximillian’s goals were to secularize Bavaria by dissolving all monasteries in 1802 and by generating state revenues from sold-off church lands, and to control beer-brewing rights by handing the brewing monopoly to Munich’s wealthiest brewers, who in turn paid considerable taxes on their beer production. In October 1810, the first beer festival, which would evolve into today’s Oktoberfest, was held to commemorate the crown price and princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen’s royal wedding. Beer became so important to Munich that it was even considered a staple food. Beginning in 1826, the city’s finest buildings were constructed through the Bavarian kings Ludwig I, Ludwig II and Otto (who never actively ruled due to his supposed mental illness). On June 10th, 1865, Richard Wagner’s tragic opera Tristan und Isolde premiered in Munich. About 75 miles east of Munich, in the Austrian town of Braunau am Inn, eventual German Führer Adolf Hitler was born on April 20, 1889. German mechanical engineer, physicist and professor of Physics at the University of Munich, Wilhelm Röntgen, for his production and detection of electromagnetic radiation in a wavelength range, also known as X-rays, was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics circa 1901. By the early 20th century, Munich had become a major center for the Jugendstil artistic movement, which combined liberal magazine culture with progressive industrial design and architecture. Also in the early 20th century, southern Germany was home to beer halls, where hundreds-to-thousands of people would come in the evenings to socialize, engage in political debates and even host political rallies. Following World War I, it was widely believed in Germany that the Imperial German Army did not, in fact, lose on the battlefield, but rather was betrayed, or “stabbed in the back”, on the home-front by certain citizens, particularly Jews, socialists and politicians who had overthrown the House of Hohenzollern. Adolf Hitler, who had fought in the German Army during the First World War and who was, after the war, an agent of the Bavarian Army’s Intelligence Division, was ordered to infiltrate the German Workers’ Party, or DAP, which Hitler joined on September 12, 1919. Hitler, however, agreeing with many of the DAP’s underlying tenants, rose to its top-post during Munich’s postwar political chaos. Inspired by Benito Mussolini’s successful March on Rome, Hitler, along with a league of nationalist fighting societies known as the Kampfbund, began planning, from October 22-29, 1922, to use Munich as home-base for a similar march against the Weimar Republic, which had been installed in Germany following the First World War. Roughly a year later, with dictatorial powers to govern during a period of terror and political violence in Munich, a ruling triumvirate consisting of right-wing politician Gustav Ritter von Kahr, state police chief Colonel Hans Ritter von Seisser and Reichswehr General Otto von Lossow banned Hitler from holding 14 planned mass meetings in September 1923. Realizing that Kahr would stand in the way against his march against the Weimer Republic, Hitler undertook one of the most significant events in Munich’s more recent history, the Beer Hall Putsch. On November 8, 1923, Hitler, along with the Sturmabteilung (the original paramilitary wing of the Nazi Party), marched on the Bürgerbräukeller beer hall, where Kahr was making a speech in front of 3,000 people, surrounded the hall, and set up a machine gun in the auditorium. Now inside the beer hall with his associates and unable to be heard above the crowd, Hitler fired a shot into the ceiling, jumped on a chair and yelled “The national revolution has broken out! The hall is surrounded by six hundred men. Nobody is allowed to leave.” Hitler’s putsch was not immediately successful and proved fatal, resulting in 15 Kampfbund, along with 4 Weimar Republic, belligerent deaths. Arrested shortly thereafter, Hitler was sent to trial. Pro-Nazi, the lay judges actually may have acquitted Hitler, had it not been for presiding Judge Georg Neithardt’s influence, and Hitler was sentenced to five years in Festungshaft, or fortress confinement, for treason. During his confinement, Hitler wrote the first volume of his autobiographical manifesto Mein Kampf, within which Chapter IV is titled “Munich”. Hitler was released in only eight months for good behavior. In retrospect, although unsuccessful, Hitler’s beer hall putsch was not only a defining moment for Munich, but also for the trajectory of the world, as it gave Hitler and the Nazis their first national attention, as well as a propaganda victory. Post-1933 Munich became an important city for the Nazi Party, as its headquarters was based at the Brown House between the Karolinenplatz and Königsplatz. Dachau, the first concentration camp, was built about 10 miles northwest of Munich.  Throughout World War II, Munich was bombed heavily. Following the Second World War, in 1945, a United States occupation of Munich saw to a meticulous rebuilding plan, whereby the city’s pre-war street grid would be preserved. In 1972, Munich hosted the Summer Olympics. Munich’s Allianz Arena hosted six 2006 FIFA Word Cup matches, one of which was a semi-final match between Portugal and France, with France winning 1-0 by way of a 33′ Zinedine Zidane penalty kick goal.

Bavaria’s capital and most populous city, Munich is home to around 1.5 million “Münchners” (male) and “Münchnerins” (female). Munich’s colors are black and yellow, while Bavaria’s are blue and white. Village of a Million People is Germany’s third-largest city after Berlin and Hamburg. A high standard of living is expected in the city, though its real estate prices and rental costs are some of Germany’s highest. About 30% of Munich’s residents are foreigners. German luxury vehicle and motorcycle manufacturer BMW is headquartered in Munich. Historically influential and at times volatile, Munich’s city council today consists of 13 different political groups. Munich’s Landtag of Bavaria (Bavarian State Parliament) assembles at the Maximilianeum (palatial building). Built on Upper Bavaria’s elevated plains, Village of a Million People is encompassed by a variety of natural habitats, including rivers, plateaus, foothills, flint areas, moraines, glacial out-washes and marshes. Distant, beyond the skyline, the snow-capped Bavarian Alps can be observed from certain higher points within the city. Munich’s summer July high temperatures average around 76 degrees Fahrenheit, while January winters stay at around 38 degrees. During Oktoberfest, daytime highs average at a pleasant 60 degrees, with October generally being Germany’s driest month of the year. In winter, snow and frost are not uncommon. Additional major points of interest include Neues Rathaus (New Town Hall), Frauenkirche (church / Archdiocese cathedral), Heilig-Geist-Kirche (Holy Ghost Church), Feldherrnhalle (monumental loggia / site of the Beer Hall Putsch battle), Bavarian National Museum (decorative arts museum), National Theatre (historic opera house), The Glyptothek (sculpture museum), Olympiaturm (The Olympic Tower), Olympiapark (Olympic Park, site of 1972 Summer Olympics), BMW Welt (exhibition/event venue, museum), Old Town Hall (Gothic city council building), Ludwigstraße (royal avenue), Rindermarkt (old street, originally a cattle marketplace), Mariensäule (Marian column at Marienplatz), Ruffinihaus (three-sided house), Augustiner Brewery and Bahnwärter Thiel (cultural center). Popular foods are Schnitzels, Bratwursts, Weißwürste (white veal sausage), Hendl (roast chicken), Steckerlfisch (grilled fish on a stick),  Haxen (braised pork knuckle), Leberkäse (loaf-formed sausage),  Allgäuer käsespätzle (Bavarian mac & cheese), Obazda (Bavarian cheese spread), Kartoffelsalat (German potato salad), Kartoffelsuppe (German potato soup), Leberknödelsuppe (Liver dumpling soup), Spätzle (egg noodles), Brezeln (pretzel),  Schmalznudel (Bavarian doughnut) and Apfelstrudel (apple strudel). “Liquid bread” beer types include Weissbier (wheat beer), Helles (pale lager), Dunkles (dark beer), Starkbier (higher alcohol content) and Märzen (an Oktoberfest pale, amber or dark-brown lager with a higher alcohol content than regular Helles). Also popular are wine (red and white ) and cider. Well-equipped with background information on the area, we’re ready for hotels in Munich that will help check one off the bucket-list.

Hotels In Berlin

Hotels in Berlin Germany

Hotels in Berlin offer wonderful accommodations in a destination nicknamed “Grey City”.  Known for its museums, theaters, architecture, plazas, squares, parks, restaurants, beer gardens, shopping malls, night clubs, fashion and chocolate, Berlin is found near Germany’s northeastern border, about 180 miles southeast of the second-largest German city, Hamburg. Ultimately flowing through central Berlin, the Spree river rises in the southerly Lusatian Highlands, forms the UNESCO biosphere reserve-area’s Spree Forest (a large inland delta about 60 miles southeast of Berlin), and then flows through Lake Schwielochsee before entering the city. To Berlin’s immediate west/northwest stretch a number of national forests and nature preserves, including Grunewald (lakes and ponds, hiking and mountain biking trails), Kingswood with Havel Lake & Seeburg Agricultural Landscape (forest, meadows, wetlands, lakes), Tegel Forest (hiking trails, deer, wild boar) and Spandauer Forest (loop trail, woods, wetlands, horse pastures), as well as Sanssouci Palace. Slightly farther northward in Brandenburg are found Naturpark Barnim (national reserve – large forests, woods, bogs, moon ponds, wildlife habitats), along with Memorial and Museum Sachsenhausen. Within the city, main attractions include Alexanderplatz (plaza), Brandenburg Gate (historical place), Checkpoint Charlie (historical landmark), Berlin Zoological Garden (zoo), Potsdamer Platz (plaza), KaDeWe – Kaufhaus des Westens (shopping mall), East Side Gallery (memorial), Mall of Berlin (shopping mall), Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe, Berliner Fernsehturm (tower), Berlin Wall Memorial (memorial park), Topography of Terror (history museum), Berlin Cathedral Olympiastadion Berlin (stadium), Uber Arena (event venue), Pergamonmuseum (history museum), Tierpark Berlin (animal park), Charlottenburg Palace (castle), Tiergarten (state park), Mauerpark (park), Europa-Center (shopping mall), Madame Tussauds Berlin (wax museum), Friedrichstadt-Palast (performing arts theater), Gardens of the World (park), Aquarium Berlin, Dussmann das KulturKaufhaus (book store), Hard Rock Café Berlin, Markthalle Neun (market), Jewish Museum Berlin, German Spy Museum, Volkspark Friedrichshain (park), EASTGATE Berlin (shopping mall), Gropius Passagen (shopping mall), Spandau Citadel (fortress), WILMA Shoppen (shopping mall), Futurium (museum), Berliner Philharmonie (concert hall), Tempodrom Berlin (live music venue), Park am Gleisdreieck (state park), Computer Games Museum (technology museum), Zollpackhof (restaurant / beer garden), Reichstag Building (government building), Linden-Centre (shopping mall), Café am Neuen See (beer garden), Monbijoupark (park), Zoo Palast (movie theater), Coccodrillo (Italian restaurant), Humboldt Forum (art museum), Theater des Westens (performing arts theater), Kulturbrauerei (event venue), Admiralspalast (performing arts theater), UCI Luxe East Side Gallery (movie theater), Berlin Story Bunker (museum), Tränenpalast (history museum), Schleusenkrug (beer garden), Museum für Naturkunde (natural history museum), Prater Beer Garden (beer garden), Velodrom (concert hall), Berlinische Galerie (modern art museum), Deutsche Oper Berlin (opera house), Maxxim (night club), Neue Nationalgalerie (modern art museum), Wintergarten Berlin (performing arts theater), DARK MATTER (modern art museum), Urban Nation (art museum), Märchenbrunnen (fountain), KitKatClub (night club), YAAM (night club), Soda Club Berlin (night club) and Beach 61 (beach volleyball court). Interestingly though not coincidentally, many of Berlin’s most popular and best attractions can be found in its central-to-western sections. Berlin’s professional football clubs are 1. FC Union Berlin, who play at Stadion An der Alten Försterei on the city’s far-southeast side, and Hertha BSC, who play at the aforementioned Olympiastadion Berlin on the city’s far-west side. Berlin’s main airport is Berlin Brandenburg Airport, while its subway system is the U-Bahn. The city’s outer ring road, or orbital motorway, is Bundesautobahn 10, which, like most of the German autobahn, has no speed limit and minimal police presence. Newly home to Uber Arena (formerly Mercedes-Benz Arena), Berlin naturally has wide-ranging Uber rideshare service, which encompasses the airport. When traveling to Grey City, keep in mind that there might be lots of cyclists on the road. Dress codes vary amongst districts, so be sure to check an individual establishment’s dress code policies beforehand. Open all night, Berlin night clubs are known to get wild. Cash is still widely used, and when service is good, tipping is customary at around 10%. In Berlin, cars travel on the right-hand side of the road, currency is the Euro, and the drinking age is 18 years old. Top events include IFA Berlin, Berlin Art Week, Berlinale, Berlin Fashion Week, Festival of Lights, Long Night of Museums, Berlin Marathon, Berlin Beer Week eat! Berlin, The Champions Burger, Cheese Berlin, JazzFest Berlin, Musikfest Berlin, C2C Germany, Lollapalooza, Citadel Music Festival, Melt Festival, CTM Festival, Karneval der Kulturen, Transmediale, Berlin AlonalNation of Gondwana and Pop Kultur.  Hotels in Berlin are some of Central Europe’s best accommodations. Before we get to hotels in Berlin, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.

Human settlements are estimated to have existed in the Berlin-area since around 60,000 BC, with a deer mask being discovered that dates to around 9,000 BC. From 2,000 BC to the 7th century, it is thought, respectively, that the area had been inhabited by the Lusatian culture, Germanic tribes, Semnones, Burgundians, Hevelli and Sprevane. As part of the Holy Roman Empire’s Margraviate of Brandenburg (1157AD-1806), the region came under German rule starting in the 12th century. Albert the Bear founded Brandenburg circa 1157. In Berlin Mitte, remnants of a 1280 AD house foundation have been excavated, with Berlin itself thought to have been founded in 1237. The area’s two main trade routes, the Holy Roman Empire’s Via Imperii along with an eastern-reaching route from Bruges to Novgorod, contributed to the city’s “staple right”, or right to hold a regular market, which either forced a merchant to make all stops along a prescribed tollway route, or pay a trade taxation to avoid a staple right city. The Berlin-area towns of Spandau and Köpenick formed an alliance in 1307. Electors of Brandenburg, kings of Prussia and German emperors, respectively, the House of Hohenzollern ruled in Berlin from the late 11th century to 1918. Frederick II Irontooth, starting in 1448, constructed the Royal Palace, which first became a royal residence in 1486, when John II, posthumously named “John Cicero”, came to power. Berlin electors, and the city itself, officially became Lutheran in 1539 following Berlin-Cölln’s loss as a free Hanseatic League city. Between 1618 and 1648, the Thirty Years’ War took a heavy toll on Berlin, with a third of its houses being damaged or destroyed, and half of its population being decimated. Beginning in 1640, Frederick William initiated a policy to promote immigration to, and religious tolerance in, Berlin. Thereafter, following a Huguenot immigration, approximately 30 percent of Berlin’s population had become French by the year 1700, with additional immigrants arriving from Bohemia, Poland, and Salzburg. The Kingdom of Prussia, in 1701, formed out of a personal union between the Margraviate of Brandenburg and the Duchy of Prussia. At this time, Frederick III, Elector of Brandenburg crowned himself King Frederick I in Prussia. Through a successful attempt to centralize power, King Frederick I replaced Königsberg (presently Kalingrad, Russia) with Berlin as the new Kingdom of Prussia’s capital city. Berlin merged with the four cities of Cölln, Friedrichswerder, Friedrichstadt and Dorotheenstadt in 1709. Frederick II, or “Frederick the Great “, in 1740 came to power and saw both a period of Enlightenment and the Seven Years’ War. Napoleon Bonaparte, after a victory in the War of the Fourth Coalition between France and Prussia, in 1806 marched into Berlin, though granted it self-government, with the city becoming part of the new Province of Brandenburg circa 1815. During the 19th century, the Industrial Revolution expanded the city’s economy and population. Germany’s main railway hub and economic center, Berlin and its suburban areas grew, and the city became the newly founded German Empire‘s capital in 1871. The Berlin city district separated from Brandenburg in 1881. Early in the 20th century, German Expressionism was strong in the city. The Weimar Republic, with Berlin remaining its capital, was proclaimed following the First World War. The Roaring Twenties, a time of prosperity particularly in the Western world, was also a period of economic uncertainty in Berlin, a place where Albert Einstein lived from 1914-1933, and during which time he received the 1921 Nobel Prize for Physics. Inspired by architecture that he had experienced in Vienna, Adolf Hitler had grand architectural designs planned for Berlin, which ultimately were never fulfilled. Between 1933 and 1939, about 80,000 (or half) of Berlin’s Jewish population emigrated from the city. The Summer Olympics were held in Berlin circa 1936, at which time the Olympiastadion was built. In Berlin on November 9, 1938, Kristallnacht, also known as “Night of Broken Glass” and “November pogroms”, prompted largely by the assassination of German diplomat Ernst vom Rath by Polish-Jewish, Welmar Germany expatriate Herschel Grynszpan in Paris, resulted in Jewish structures being damaged or destroyed, at least 91 deaths and thousands of the city’s Jews being imprisoned in the nearby Sachsenhausen concentration camp. Multiple Nazi prisons and camps, holding peoples from various European countries as well as Allied POWs, existed in Berlin throughout World War II. From 1943-45, and particularly during the 1945 Battle of Berlin, Allied air raids resulted in large parts of Berlin being destroyed alongside heavy civilian casualties. Following the Second World War, Berlin was divided into West (United States, United Kingdom and France) and East (Soviet Union), with all four “Allies” sharing administrative responsibilities. One of the first international crises of the Cold War was the Soviet Union’s Berlin Blockade, prompted by the Western Allies’ introduction of the Deutsche Mark into West Berlin, which blocked the Western Allies’ access to railways, roads and canals under Western control. Berlin Airlift, from the Summer of 1948 through the Fall of 1949, was a feat carried out by American and British air forces, during which time over 250,000 flights dropped up to 12,941 tons of supplies (food and fuel) per day onto West Berlin.  In 1949, the Federal Republic of Germany was founded in West Germany, and the Marxist–Leninist German Democratic Republic was proclaimed in East Germany. Naturally, this division increased Cold War tensions further. The Berlin Wall was planned to be built around West Berlin starting in 1961, which led to a US and Soviet tank standoff at Checkpoint Charlie, an infamous Berlin Wall crossing-point between East and West Berlin during the Cold War. On June 26, 1963, just 3 months before his assassination, President John F. Kennedy, in West Berlin, gave his Ich bin ein Berliner speech, which renounced Communism. A Four-Power agreement, guaranteeing access to and from West Berlin, was met in 1971 between East and West Berlin foreign ministers. On June 12, 1987, President Ronald Reagan gave a speech at Brandenburg Gate in West Berlin, infamously calling on Soviet General Secretary Mikhail Gorbachev to “tear down this wall.” The opening of the Iron Curtain on August 19, 1989, followed by the Berlin Wall’s destruction on November 9, 1989, naturally were causes of great rejoice amongst the German people. Following the Cold War, Berlin experienced significant urban development, and on June 18, 1994, soldiers from the United States, France and Britain marched in a Berlin parade to commemorate the reunification of the city.

Home to over 3.8 million “Berliners”, Berlin is Germany’s capital and largest city. The European Union’s second-most populous city behind London, Berlin produced a total GDP of €147 billion in 2018. The city’s economy is dominated by the service sector, with about 85% of companies conducting business through services. Over 30 million tourists per year visit Grey City. Along with Hamburg and Bremen, Berlin is a German Stadtstaaten, or city-state, while also being 1 of 16 federal states. Spanning 110-acres and colored with around 22,000 different plant species, Botanischer Garten is one of the world’s largest botanical gardens. Some of Central Europe’s top-rated Michelin restaurants can be found in Berlin. The city’s coat of arms displays a bear, and is thus an example of canting arms. Home to a temperate climate, Berlin experiences generally mild summers and winters, with July/August high temperatures in the mid-to-upper 70s degrees Fahrenheit, and December/January highs in the mid-to-upper 30s. Additional points of interest include Berlin Palace, Bellevue Palace, Konzerthaus Berlin, Museum Island, Pergamon Museum, Alte Nationalgalerie, Egyptian Museum of Berlin, Rotes Rathaus (town hall), Victory Column, Gendarmenmarkt, Potsdam Square, Breitscheidplatz, The New Church, French Cathedral, Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church, St. Hedwig’s Cathedral, Berlin Hauptbahnhof, Berlin Potsdamer Platz and Humboldt University of Berlin. Popular foods include sauerbraten (Germany’s national dish, a traditional, heavily marinated meat roast, usually beef), bratwurst (pork or veal link sausage), schnitzel (tenderized, breaded, fried, thin slice of meat, typically pork), kassler (cured, slightly smoked cut of pork), eisbein (corned ham hock), buletten (German hamburgers), königsberger klopse (German meatballs), currywurst (fast food dish, a steamed, fried, spicy sausage), döner kebab (Turkish, similar to shawarma and gyros), fried veal liver, roast goose (Christmas-time), spätzle (egg noodles), kartoffelpuffer (German potato pancakes), senfeier (German eggs in mustard sauce), pretzels, pfannkuchen (German pancakes), Berliner pfannkuche (doughnut), rote grütze (sweet fruit dish), schwarzwälder kirschtorte (Black Forest cake), apfelstrudel (apple strudel), chocolate and ice cream. Drinks are lager beer (pilsner), wheat/sour beer (Berliner Weisse), craft beer, Schnapps, Halb und Halb (orange bitter liquor), ayran (Turkish yogurt drink), black tea, fruit tea and mineral water. Good to know is that “Ein Absacker” means the last drink before going home, or nightcap. Excited perhaps by some more background information on the area. we’re ready for hotels in Berlin that will help make for an unforgettable experience.
