Hotels in Helsinki provide elegant accommodations in a destination nicknamed “White City of the North”. Known for its architecture, laid-back setting, public saunas, Scandinavian cuisine and incredible waterways, Helsinki is a port-city in southern Finland. Directly across from the Estonian capital city Tallinn on the Gulf of Finland, White City of the North is also about half-way between fellow-port-cities Stockholm to the west, and St. Petersburg to the east. Finland is home to both the northern lights and Santa Claus. When visiting Helsinki, keep in mind that it’s not polite to stare and that the Finns like their saunas hot! As such, it’s good to stay well-hydrated, especially if partaking in public saunas. Helsinki’s drinking age is 18 years old for beer and wine, while 20 years old for spirits. Currency is the Euro. Top events include Helsinki Festival, Helsinki International Film Festival, Sideways Festival, Lux Helsinki, Flow Festival, Helsinki Chamber Music Festival, Tuska Festival, Weekend Festival Finland, Helsinki Cup, Helsinki Outsider Art Festival, Helsinki Christmas Market, Baltic Circle Festival, Helsinki Nordic Music Festival, Seurasaari Midsummer’s Eve Festival and Helsinki Baltic Herring Market. Indeed, hotels in Helsinki are some of the best in all of Scandinavia. Before we get to hotels in Helsinki, let’s take a look at some background information on the area to help you along the way.
Human presence in the Helsinki area can be traced to around 5000 BC, when the ice cover retreated at the end of the Ice Age. Tavastians, utilizing the area for fishing and hunting, occupied present-day Helsinki during the Iron Age. Early settlements along the Helsinki coastline were first raided by Vikings and subsequently colonized by Sweden via the Second Crusade to Finland. In 1550, King Gustav I of Sweden established the area as a trading town. Plague killed most of Helsinki’s inhabitants circa 1710. Russia, in 1809, defeated Sweden in the Finnish War. Thereafter, the town began to develop into a more significant city. Russian Emperor Alexander I moved the Finnish capital from Turku to Helsinki in 1812. The Finnish Civil War and the Winter War both occurred in the early 20th century. In 1952, the Olympic Games were held in the city, naturally aiding development further, though it wasn’t until the 1970s that Helsinki became truly urbanized.
Finland’s capital city, Helsinki has a population of around 655,000 people. The third-largest Nordic municipality, Helsinki is located near the Gulf of Finland. One of the world’s most livable cities, White City of the North has a humid continental climate, with high temperatures ranging from 70 degrees Fahrenheit in July, to just below freezing in February. A major Nordic city, Helsinki is home to many fine museums, theaters, restaurants and venues. Major points of interest include Helsinki Cathedral, Kiasma, Aurinkolahti, Suomenlinna, Eläintarhanlahti, University of Helsinki, National Museum of Finland, Helsinki City Museum, Finnish National Gallery, Finnish National Theatre, Helsinki Music Centre, Senate Square and Helsinki Olympic Stadium. Popular cuisine includes herring, rye bread, cheese, rice pies, salmon, cinnamon buns and other seafoods. Finland’s national beverage is milk, while the most sought alcoholic drinks are lakka (a liquor derived from cloudberry fruit) and mesimarja ( a liquor which comes from brambleberries). Now that we have some background information on the area, it’s time for hotels in Helsinki that are sure to help make for an amazing experience.

Hello, I really want to first appreciate your effort in putting this great website together and writing this article. When going on vacation I try as much as possible to get the best out of it and I am going to Finland and straight to Helsinki. With the information you have given me, my entire vacation just became very interesting. Thank you very much
You’re welcome Benny and thank you for the comments. Glad to hear you are thinking about a Helsinki trip 🙂
Hi, this is a gorgeous hotel room, I am again shocked at how awesome the price is. I have never been to Europe, but I would love to check out the museums and history there. I am not into nightclubs or any of that, but I do enjoy learning and seeing the sites.
This place looks like it is in within walking distance of everything you would need to have a great vacation experience. It still amazes me to look at this site and see that I can rent a penthouse for less then a normal hotel room (where I live at-least)
Jake the prices are awesome yes and renting a penthouse is always a great idea 🙂
I love the architecture of Finland, apart from the interesting sound of the Finnish language it seems like a beautiful country to explore. after seeing Hotel F6 in this article, I have to say that I don’t think I have ever seen a more modern looking and chic place to stay when on holiday I don’t cook at all, and having so many restaurants within the vicinity, it leaves me spoiled for choice. Bicycle usage is offered at this hotel which is amazing as I am a seasoned cyclist. Hotel F6 is priced well and definitely an option to consider.
