Hotels in Krakow

Hotels in Krakow offer outstanding accommodations amongst longstanding European beauty. Once the capital of Poland for over 500 years, Krakow is known for its historical buildings, museums, nightlife, outdoor activities and quality restaurants. The city’s Old Town central district, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, connects a storied medieval past to a bustling 21st century metropolis. When traveling to Krakow, it’s a good idea to book in advance and learn some of the language, such as witam (hello), do widzenia (goodbye) and dziękuję ci (thank you). Be sure to pack walking shoes, as Krakow is a fine place to explore on foot.  Poland’s currency is the Poland złoty, the drinking age is 18 years and cars drive on the right hand side. Known for its friendly inhabitants, the city harbors some the best establishments in Poland. The city’s most successful football club of late is Wisła Kraków, while MKS Cracovia is its most long-standing, dating to 1906. Festivals include Krakow Film Festival, Off Plus Camera, Misteria Paschalia, Saint Stanislaw’s Procession, Juwenalia, Wianki, Kraków Live Festival, Tauron Nowa Muzyka Festival, Kinobranie Summer Film Festival, Golden Era Film Music Festival, Pierogi Festival and Coke Live Festival. Indeed, hotels in Krakow are some of the most beloved in all of Europe. Before we get to hotels in Krakow, let’s take a look at some background information on the area to help you along the way.

Dating to the 7th century, Krakow was Poland’s official capital until 1596. Archeological evidence at Wawel Hill suggests that a Stone Age settlement had existed in the Krakow area. Legend attributes Krakow’s founding to Krakus, a mythical ruler who built the settlement above the cave of the dragon Smok Wawelski. Krakow became the seat of the Polish government in 1038, and was overrun as a result of the Mongol invasion of 1241. The University of Krakow was founded in 1362 by King Casmir III the Great. During the 15th and 16th century, Poland’s Golden Age brought Renaissance art and architecture, which included synagogues such as the Old Synagogue. The largest of five bells hanging in Wawel Cathedral, Royal Sigismund Bell was cast by Hans Behem in 1520. The last of the Jagiellons, King Sigismund II died childless in 1572, resulting in Poland’s throne being passed to Henry III of France and subsequent foreign rulers. A Swedish invasion, along with a bubonic plague outbreak, signaled Sigismund III of the House of Vasa to move the administrative capital of the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth from Kraków to Warsaw circa 1596. The Free City of Cracow was incorporated into Austria, creating the Grand Duchy of Krakow on November 16, 1846. Krakow became a Polish center for culture and art, a place where Polish artists such as Jan Matejko resided. In 1901, running water and streetcars were introduced. Nearly 40 years later, The Third Reich established the area as part of the General Government and capital following the invasion of Poland in 1939.  Architecturally, Krakow remained relatively undamaged throughout World War II, though its Jewish ghettos proved a grim contrast to its elaborate history.  The Stalinist regime transitioned Krakow from an academic, to an industrial city post World War II.

Poland’s second largest city and home to around 770,000, Krakow sits on the Vistula River in Lesser Poland.  Today, Krakow draws around 13 million tourists annually, including 3 million from abroad. The złoty, the masculine form of the Polish adjective “golden” and pronounced zwol-tih, is Poland’s official currency. A traditional, five-note bugle call, known as St. Mary’s Trumpet Call, is played every hour at Saint Mary’s Basilica. Visitor’s enjoy the city’s historical monuments, architecture, food, customs, recreational activities, religious buildings and businesses. High temperatures range from 80 degrees Fahrenheit in August, to 35 degrees in January. Points of interest include Wawel Cathedral, Saints Peter and Paul Church, Wawel Castle, Floriańska Street, Cloth Hall, Church of St. Adalbert, Main Market Square, Palace of Art, Planty Park, Grunwald Monument, Kraków University of Economics, Jagiellonian University, National Museum, Manggha, Polish Aviation Museum, Juliusz Słowacki Theatre, Ludowy Theatre, Opera Krakowska, Kraków Philharmonic, Wieliczka Salt Mine, Ojców National Park, Pieskowa Skała, Tyniec Abbey, Wisła Kraków Stadium, Cracovia Stadium and Tauron Arena Kraków. Popular foods are sausages, sauerkraut, beetroots, gherkins, sour cream, breads and cheeses and of course pierogis, while popular alcoholic drinks include krupnik, which is a sweet liqueur, lager beer and vodka. Now that we have some background information on the area, it’s time for hotels in Krakow that are certain to inspire.

  1. Thank you for this most interesting read on Krakow Poland and you certainly have done your research when it comes to places to stay and things to do.

I think looking at the temperatures, I would rather go in January when the weather is a bit cooler or even cold. I don’t really like the heat when I go on a touristy type holiday.

I like the look of St Florian’s gate, as it is nice and central and the price is just right to take the entire family. It is within walking distance from the Krakow Barbican and Galeria Krakowska Shopping Center, so everyone can shop to their heart’s content while I do the historical sites.

  2. Hello,

This is a very informative article about Krakow city and the best hotels and penthouse rentals available for ever growing number of tourists. Even though the price is comparatively high, Plac Kossaka 6 in Bachleda Luxury Hotel seems truly exquisite. I think it would be a wonderful and memorable experience to visit Potocka Gallery, 20th Century Polish Art Gallery, National Museum of Krakow, Archaeological Museum, Dragon’s Den, Krypta u Pijarów Gallery, Wawel Royal Castle and many other near by important places. I think it would definitely be worth it.

  3. I am surprised at the price of these penthouse suites. They have all the necessary features I would want in a hotel. I love what a group travel can do to the pockets. An average of 7 people for such prices is very doable. The design and clean look of Amber Design Residence is very clean and modern.  Seems like Poland also has a rich history with several restaurants within each other. Thanks for these great reviews as always.

    1. Carol you are totally right to say that Poland has a rich history, as evidenced by the beautiful surviving architecture found throughout the city!

  4. Now Poland is one place I never knew would have so many beautiful hotels. Travelers around the world hope to get some good place to rest after a long journey during vacation and business trips and landing in such luxurious hotels would be the perfect way to have a good rest. Although some of the prices are on the high side, considering the services provided at these hotels, then it’s worth the prices. I’ll share this information across

    1. Benson you are right-on to say that you might not expect Poland to be so beautiful, but when you dig a little deeper you may see that it has some of the most beautiful cities in the world!

  5. You have written such a thorough description of each of these hotels.  The pictures are lovely; it is hard to decide which hotel I like the best.

I love that you put the points of interest close by in your post, plus a description/picture of each.  I’d love to visit Krakow, and if I ever do, will revisit your post first and learn what’s really good to see and a great place to stay.  You have given thorough information, allowing a visitor to choose intelligently from several beautiful places.

  6. The hotels you picked out are really nice. I knew Poland was beautiful, but you managed to capture it through hotels. One day I will visit. Especially the Penthouse Piedmont. I could die looking at that place. The floor plans are immaculate. I look forward to more locations. Where are we off to next?

  7. Hi I would like to thank you for your informative article on hotels in Krakow Poland. As this will be my first visit to Krakow I really wasn’t sure where would be the best place to stay. Admittedly, I’ve never been, but I don’t believe it’s late as I’m currently working to adjust my schedule to enable me visit all my dream destinations. 12. Uuu-uu, the fact that it’s UNESCO, that’s always pretty cool. Personally, I’ve heard good things about Krakow but never yet been. Also, I did not know that Krakow is one of the oldest cities they have. Fascinating.

As far as the hotels, I loved how that indoor pool with hydro massage at Planty Park Krakow sounded. That said, I feel that $825 per night is a bit too steep for me currently. But as far as insane deals go, I think the price on Dragon’s Den Krakow is exactly that. Plus, they’ve got a sauna and the views, and a gym. It really looks like a great deal to me.

    I appreciate it, cheers.
