Hotels in Istanbul are some of Turkey’s best accommodations. Before we get to hotels in Istanbul, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.

Human settlement in the Istanbul area can be traced to at least 6000 BC, as evidenced by unearthed Neolithic artifacts. The Fikirtepe mound, discovered on the city’s Asian side, dates to around 5500 BC. On the European side, a Thracian settlement from around 1000 BC has been discovered on the Sarayburnu peninsula. Greek settlers from Megara established Byzantium on the Bosphorus’ European side in around 660 BC. Roman military commander and author Pliny the Elder referenced the name Byzantium in his writings. The Greeks built an acropolis near the Golden Horn estuary, which fueled the early city’s economy. Persia briefly conquered the area at the turn of the 5th century BC, before relinquishing it to the Greeks following the Greco-Persian Wars. Early-on, Byzantium was part of the Athenian League, or Delian League, a confederacy of Greek city-states, and was allied with the Romans. In 73 AD, Byzantium became a part of the Roman Empire. Constantine the Great became emperor of the Roman Empire in September, 324 AD. Immediately thereafter, Constantine designed plans to replace Byzantium with a Christian city, which would be named Nova Roma, or more commonly, Constantinople. Highly successful, Constantinople would last all the way into the 20th century. Constantinople was proclaimed the Roman Empire’s capital on May 11, 330 AD. Originally, the Hagia Sophia was built as a Christian cathedral, the world’s largest of such for about a thousand years. Constantine also renovated and expanded the Hippodrome of Constantinople, which showcased horse and chariot racing events. For many centuries, Constantinople shielded Europe from eastern invaders and from the advance of Islam. Located on the caravan route of the historic Silk Road Eurasian trade route network, Constantinople was the European continents’ wealthiest city during the latter Byzantine era, and was referred to as the “cradle of Orthodox Christian civilization”. In 1025, following the reign of Basil II, Constantinople began its decline. Crusaders, diverted from their mission, sacked and pillaged the city in 1204. The Orthodox Byzantine Empire was replaced by the Latin Empire, and the Hagia Sophia was converted to a Catholic church. Andronikos II Palaiologos, who reduced the area’s military forces, can be attributed to the Christian city’s demise. Ottoman Turks, gradually cutting off the city’s supply lines to other smaller cities, began strategizing the overtaking of Constantinople circa the mid-14th century. After an eight-week siege on the city, and the killing of Constantine XI, the last Roman emperor, Sultan Mehmed II “the Conqueror” captured Constantinople on May 29, 1453. Mehmed II declared Constantinople the Ottoman Empire’s capital and converted the Hagia Sophia from a grand cathedral to an imperial mosque. Sultan Mehmed welcomed outsiders and revitalized much of the city. In the 16th century, plague struck. Under Suleiman I, or Suleiman the Magnificent, the city flourished, and by the end of the 18th century Constantinople had a population of around 570,000. Progressive Sultan Mahmud II introduced new technology, constructed bridges across the Golden Horn and, in the 1880s, connected the city’s railway system to the European railway network. The Young Turk Revolution of 1908 resulted in the reopening of the Ottoman Parliament, which had been closed for 30 years due to its dissolution by Sultan Abdul Hamid II. Early 20th century wars such as the Italo-Turkish War and the Balkan Wars led to the 1913 Ottoman coup d’état, which installed a triumvirate known as the Three Pashas. The Ottoman Empire aligned with the German Empire, Austria-Hungry and Bulgaria in World War I. On April 24, 1915, the city’s deportation of Armenian intellectuals, many notables being poets and writers, marked the beginning of the First World War’s Armenian genocide. Between 1914 and 1927, Constantinople’s Christian population decreased from around 450,000 to 240,000. The August 10, 1920 Treaty of Sèvres ceded large parts of Ottoman territory to Allied Powers and marked the beginning of the Ottoman Empire’s partitioning. The Turkish War of Independence  from May 19, 1919 to October 11, 1922 between Turkish Nationalists and Allied Powers resulted in a Turkish victory and the establishment of the Republic of Turkey. The last Ottoman Sultan, Mehmed VI, was exiled to Sanremo, Italy, where he died on May 16, 1926. “Liberation Day of Instanbul”, or İstanbul’un Kurtuluşu, occurred on October 6, 1923, when Turkish forces ceremoniously entered the city following an Allied departure 2 days prior. Ankara became the Turkish Republic’s new capital on October 29, 1923. In 1930, Constantinople was officially renamed to Istanbul. A wealth tax in 1942, assessed on non-Muslims, caused many religious minority businesses to be liquidated. New squares and roadways were constructed at the turn of the 1950s, and by the 1970s, new factories on the city’s outskirts created a rapid increase in Istanbul’s population.

One of only five transcontinental cities, Istanbul today is home to around 15.6 million “Istanbulites”. Turkey’s largest city, Istanbul welcomes around 13 million visitors annually. 90% of Istanbul’s hotels are located on the city’s European side. Fish restaurants are abundant in The City on Seven Hills. Local fish species include bluefish, turbot, Atlantic bonito, sea bass, red mullet, white grouper, European anchovy, boops boops and the venomous black scorpionfish. Located about 9 miles off the city-center coast, Princes’ Islands is a small archipelago consisting of 4 main islands. Princes’ Islands is accessible by ferry. Essentially, the main modes of transportation on Princes’ Islands are bicycle or horse and cart. Since 1660, the Egyptian Bazaar, or Spice Bazaar, has been the city’s major spice market. One of the world’s oldest and largest covered markets, the Grand Bazaar is spread out over 7.5 square acres. The Grand Bazaar attracts up to 400,000 visitors per day. Istanbul’s climate is tempered by the Black Sea. Summer high temperatures average around 80 degrees Fahrenheit, while winters average around 43 degrees. Additional points of interest include Hagia Irene, Yıldız Palace, Serpent Column, Forum of Constantine, Column of Constantine, İstiklal Avenue (pedestrian street), Abdi İpekçi Street (shopping street), Levent business district, Süreyya Opera House, Atatürk Olympic Stadium, Istanbul University and Sirkeci Railway Terminal. Local foods include kebabs, seafoods, fish, grilled eggplant, balik ekmek (fish sandwich), midye dolma (stuffed mussels), meze (appetizers), manti (dumplings), menemen (a scrambled egg dish), simit (circular, ring-shaped bread), lahmacun (a type of flatbread), kestane (roasted chestnuts), Turkish delight (gel confection), dondurma (ice cream), kanafeh (a noodle-like pastry dessert) and, of course, baklava. Good to know is that the Kumkapı quarter in the Fatih district is home to around fifty seafood restaurants. The most common alcoholic beverages are rakı (a potent, sweetened, anise-flavored spirit made from grape pomace), narince (white wine), okuzgozu (red wine), beer and boza (a malt drink – low alcohol content). Non-alcoholic beverages include ayran (a refreshing drink made with yogurt), salgam suyu (turnip water), pomegranate juice, Turkish coffee and cay (Turkish tea). With a little background information on the area, we’re ready for hotels in Istanbul that are sure to excite.

  1. Hi!

I just love the pictures of the views you can find in Istanbul.  I was curious and looked.  A room with a piano?  Wow, the penthouses are getting fancy.  I personally would try to get a nice view of the Marmara sea, like The Stay Bosphorus section.  It looks gorgeous.

    Thanks for the post.

  2. Pictures of Dersaadet Hotel Istanbul is breathtakingly beautiful. I have never been to Turkey. I must say it sure looks like a beautiful place to visit with lots to see. The part I like is the historical buildings been taken care and being able to learn the history behind it. With 15 million people living there and 13 million tourists, very busy. Lettin tourists know about the great prices on hotels helps to make a decision to travel.

    1. Hi Michelle, thank you for the comments. Definitely lots of people in Istanbul living and visiting there. The history is pretty fascinating, so checking out some of the historical places might be a fun idea.

  3. Hello Admin,

Thanks a lot for your important and informative post. Recently I and some of my friends made a plan to go to Turkey. We’ve decided to travel to Istanbul in Turkey. But we’re tensed about the penthous hotel. From your post, I came to know about the best penthouse hotels in Istanbul. I showed your post to my friends with very excited. We have chosen Dersaadet hotel Istanbul which is located in the heart of Old Istanbul in a 19th century Ottoman House. We like its nice services.

Really your post is so helpful and it helps me a lot. Thanks again. Can you tell me how could I know about the per day cost of this hotel?

    1. Hi Snigda, Penthouses usually run between $50-$150 per person, depending on how far in advance you book and how many bedrooms they feature. Thank you for stopping by and happy travels!

  4. Wow, this is certainly an interesting post on Istanbul. It is one place I never really thought of visiting, but now after reading this article, I want to come and experience it for myself.

The penthouses are beautiful, but I am sure rather expensive. I especially like the Stay Bosphorus with that beautiful view of the water. I like that it is also close to all amenities like a golf club for my husband and the malls and historical places for myself.

  5. I think this is the best site to land if you are looking to travel. You always provide the best that is available.

These are really lovely pent houses with killer views. I love how I can  just sit at the balcony and watch the towns and the seas. Such beautiful views. The House HOtel Karakoy has really gone the extra mile with the piano.

Thank you for this review. Feels like I’m already in Istanbul.

  6. Istanbul being one of the populous city in Turkey, having  that serves as the bridge Western and eastern world already triggered my interest in visiting the place as an adventurist. Istanbul appears to be the best place one can explore. Although I haven’t been there but I must say with this review and those amazing pictures there in, it is enough to convince an adventurist to explore the place. If I am to visit this place, I think I’ll love to visit ‘Witt Istanbul Suites’. I will like to check out those places around the suite in order to make my visitation fun-filled. This review is very useful for people planning to visit Turkey.

  7. Wow! Istanbul looks so beautiful. I had no idea that so many tourists came there. You have inspired me to take a look at this great location for my next vacation. These Penthouses are beautiful and clean and all look great. I love the Piano in one of them! How expensive is Istanbul? Is it pretty modestly priced?

  8. Istanbul looks like a Beautiful city to visit in the first-class style. Of the properties listed, I love the looks of Fraser Place Anthill Istanbul. The city view by night is exciting and stunning and allows one to wind down on a busy day of business or tourism. As a writer myself, I can see me in the picture looking out on the city over my laptop and writing every morning as the sun comes up. Thanks for a great overview of the Penthouse options Turkey has to offer.

  9. Oh thank you for listing the Istanbul penthouses. I am planning a business trip there around November, and I would love to rent one of them for a whole week. I must consider between Fraser Place Anthlll and The Stay Bosphorus. The view is so good that I can’t wait for November. Just in case, I want to ask if there is any other penthouse located near airport? Most of the penthouses listed above seems to be rather far from airport. If not, then it’s alright. I will consider between those two. Thank you.

  10.  Hello there!!

Wow!! This is amazing. I loved to see the pictures. You have shown beautiful pictures of different hotel in istanbul. Istanbul itself is a very beautiful place. Travelling there is like a dream. I also have the dream. So knowing about the hotels to stay is necessary. I liked the Agaoglu Maslak 1453 most. It’s view just blown my mind. places are also nearby the hotel. How much the hotels cost per person and per day??

  11. Hi,

Quite an interesting read! I must also admit that you’ve chosen great hotels/penthouses that one is spoilt for choice. I like the elegant promise of quality accommodation for a visiting tourist. The Dersaadet seems to be my choice from your great list.

Besides that, I’ve found the history of Istanbul interesting. I honestly did not know it has 15m people. That’s about a third of my own country’s population! For someone interested in the oldest religious history of the city, which museum would one best make a visit to?

  12. Oh WOW!!! Those images are breath taking and so difficult to choose from. My favorite would be Cumhuriyet Mah. Incirli Dede Cad.Bomonti, then followed by Salhane Sokak.

Istanbul seems to be the perfect destination for a memorable honeymoon, or holiday altogether. Damn there are so many great locations there. Never been there before, but now that I’ve come across your article, Istanbul is definitely one of the places I would love to visit sooner or later.

    Wonderful post. Keep it up.

  13. My partner is a huge fan of Erturgrul, I`m not sure if you have seen the series.  As a result, a month-long visit to Europe and Turkey for is now in the pipeline, just as soon as the Covid Crisis is over. We are looking forward to exploring Istanbul. The selection of hotels you have highlighted here is a really helpful resource as my partner says she wants to “soak up” the atmosphere and history of the City.  Not to mention see where/how Sultan Mehmed II conquered the City. The History you have described is really informative and the choice of top hotels is terrific.  I was also very impressed by the pop-up regarding Covid.

    1. It appears that Diriliş: Ertuğrul is available on Netflix, Trevor, so that would be worth a look at for sure, and thank you for that. There is a lot of romanticism that goes along with ancient and even more modern Constantinople. A great example is with Bram Stoker’s Dracula, a classic film!  Glad to see that you appreciated the post and best wishes for you and yours through the covid crisis. Cheers to better days ahead.

  14. That first picture with the pink skyline is so lovely.  I’m really tempted to go to Istanbul, I have been for a while.  Looking at all these beautiful penthouses, I want to go even more now.  It’s important for me to have a place I can eat at, I don’t like eating meat.  So the penthouse I would choose is Kemeraltı Caddesi as it has a vegan restaurant nearby YUZU Karakoy.  I’ve bookmarked the page.  Thank you for the information.
