When traveling to Istanbul there are some things to keep in mind. Istanbul’s official language is Turkish, though English is widely spoken in tourist areas. Keep in mind that over 90% of Istanbul’s population is Sunni Muslim. In religious areas modest dress is required (ex. females must cover hair in mosques). Although generally forbidden to Muslims, alcohol is served readily in tourist areas. Probably best avoided are Istanbul street meats. Istanbul accommodations are some of Turkey’s best. Before we get to Istanbul accommodations, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.

 

 

6000 BC Neolithic artifacts have been unearthed in the Istanbul area. Found on the city’s Asian side, the Fikirtepe Mound dates to around 5500 BC. A 1000 BC Thracian settlement has been discovered on the European side (Sarayburnu peninsula). Around 660 BC Greek settlers (Megara) established Byzantium on the Bosphorus (west side), as referenced by Pliny the Elder (Roman military commander & author) in his writings. Early Byzantium was part of the Athenian League (Delian League – confederacy of Greek city-states) and allied with the Romans. The Greeks built an acropolis near the Golden Horn estuary. Persia briefly conquered the area (turn of 5th century BC) before relinquishing it to the Greeks following the Greco-Persian Wars. Byzantium became part of the Roman Empire circa 73 AD. After Constantine “The Great”‘s coronation (Roman Emperor – September, 324 AD) plans were set to replace Byzantium with a Christian city. Thus, Nova Roma (Constantinople) was born. An enduring city, Constantinople would last into the 20th century. Constantinople was declared the Roman Empire’s capital on May 11, 330 AD. Located on Silk Road (caravan / Eurasian trade route network), Constantinople was once the European continents’ wealthiest city (latter-Byzantine era – the “cradle of Orthodox Christian civilization”). Constantine the Great renovated and expanded the Hippodrome of Constantinople (horse / chariot racing stadium). Originally built as a Christian cathedral, Hagia Sophia remained the world’s largest cathedral for about a thousand years. Constantinople would shield Eastern Europe from far eastern invaders and the advance of Islam for several centuries. Following the reign of Basil II in 1025, however, Constantinople began to decline. Diverted from their mission, Crusaders sacked and pillaged the city in 1204. The Orthodox Byzantine Empire was replaced by the Latin Empire, and the Hagia Sophia was converted into a Catholic church. Reducing the area’s military presence, Byzantine Emperor Andronikos II Palaiologos was instrumental in the Christian city’s ultimate demise. In the mid-14th century Ottoman Turks began strategizing the overtaking of Constantinople. They would begin by cutting-off the city’s supply lines to other smaller cities. Sultan Mehmed II “the Conqueror” captured Constantinople on May 29, 1453 after an eight-week siege. Constantine XI (last Roman emperor) was killed as a consequence. Mehmed declared Constantinople the Ottoman Empire’s capital. The Hagia Sophia was converted from a once grand cathedral to an imperial mosque. Sultan Mehmed actually welcomed outsiders and revitalized much of the city. Plague struck Istanbul during the 16th century. Suleiman I “The Magnificent” saw the city flourish. Constantinople had a population of around 570,000 at the turn of the 19th century. Under Sultan Mahmud II Istanbul introduced new technology, constructed bridges across the Golden Horn and connected the city’s railway system to the European railway network (1880s). Beginning operation on January 17, 1875, the Tünel (city’s oldest underground urban rail line) connects Karaköy lower station (near Golden Horn) to Beyoğlu upper station (Tünel Square, southern end of Istiklal Avenue). The 1908 Young Turk Revolution saw the Ottoman Parliament reopen (closed for 30 years due to its dissolution by Sultan Abdul Hamid II). Meanwhile, early 20th-century wars (Italo-Turkish War, Balkan Wars) led to a 1913 Ottoman coup d’état. A triumvirate known as the “Three Pashas” was then installed. During World War I The Ottoman Empire aligned with the German Empire, Austria-Hungry and Bulgaria. The First World War’s Armenian genocide began on April 24, 1915 with the deportation of certain Armenian intellectuals (many poets and writers). Constantinople’s Christian population also decreased (by about half) within about a decade (450k-240k, 1914-1927). The Treaty of Sèvres (August 10, 1920) ceded large parts of Ottoman territory to Allied Powers. The 1920 treaty marked the beginning of the Ottoman Empire’s partitioning. The Turkish War of Independence (May 19, 1919-October 11, 1922) between Turkish Nationalists and Allied Powers saw a Turkish victory followed by the Republic of Turkey’s establishment. Mehmed VI (last Ottoman Sultan) was exiled to Sanremo (Italy – died there May 16, 1926). İstanbul’un Kurtuluşu (Liberation Day of Instanbul) occurred on October 6, 1923, when Turkish forces ceremoniously entered the city following an Allied departure (2 days prior). Ankara became the Turkish Republic’s new capital on October 29, 1923. Constantinople was officially renamed to Istanbul in 1930. A 1942 wealth tax assessed on non-Muslims caused many religious minority businesses to be liquidated. New squares and roadways were constructed at the turn of the 1950s. New factories sprung-up on the city’s outskirts by the 1970s, and Istanbul’s population increased rapidly.

Home to around 15.6 million “Istanbulites”, Istanbul is one of the world’s only five transcontinental cities. Almost all Istanbul accommodations are located on the European side. About 13 million people visit Turkey’s largest city annually. Egyptian Bazaar (Spice Bazaar) has been the city’s major spice market since 1660. Meanwhile, Grand Bazaar (one of the world’s oldest & largest covered markets – 7.5 square acres) attracts up to 400,000 daily visitors. The popular Princes’ Islands (small archipelago – 4 main islands – about 9 miles off city-center coast) is accessible via ferry. “Islands of the Princes” main modes of transportation are bicycle or horse and cart. The Black Sea helps keep Istanbul’s temperatures mild throughout the year. Summer highs average around 80 °F, while winters hover around 43 degrees.
