Hotels in Kuala Lumpur offer excellent accommodations in a destination nicknamed “The Garden City of Lights”. Known for its iconic towers, temples, shopping malls, museums, convention centers, street markets, parks, gardens, squares, restaurants, skyline, observation decks, natural surroundings, hiking trails and waterfalls, the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur is located in central-western Malaysia. Malaysia’s capital city, Kuala Lumpur is home to modern, as well as British colonial-era, landmarks. Bordering / surrounding the city, points of interest are Kemensah Trail, Dam Stop (scenic spot), Bukit Kembara Trailhead (hiking area), KL-View in Ampang (tourist attraction), Bukit Saga via Taman Saga (hiking area), Ketumbar Hill (hiking area), National Stadium Bukit Jalil, Wawasan Hill Trail (hiking area), Sunway Lagoon (theme park), Taman Rimba Bukit Kerinchi (park), Thai Buddhist Chetawan Pagoda (Buddhist temple), Taman Tasik Metropolitan Kepong (park), Pisang Waterfall and Lepoh Waterfall. Within the city, main attractions include Petronas Twin Towers, Suria KLCC (shopping mall), Pavilion KL (shopping mall), KLCC Park, Central Market (shopping mall), Independence (Merdeka) Square, Mid Valley Megamall (shopping mall), Menara Kuala Lumpur (landmark tower), Aquaria KLCC (aquarium), 1 Utama Shopping Centre (shopping mall), Berjaya Times Square (shopping mall ), Plaza Low Yat (shopping mall), MyTOWN Shopping Centre (shopping mall), SOGO Kuala Lumpur (shopping mall), Perdana Botanical Garden, National Mosque of Malaysia, Sunway Putra Mall (shopping mall), The Gardens Mall (shopping mall), World Trade Centre Kuala Lumpur. Kuala Lumpur’s professional football club is Kuala Lumpur City F.C. As the city is located at the Gombak and Klang Rivers’ confluence, the name Kuala Lumpur means “muddy confluence”. The limestone Batu Caves, 400 million years old and the site of Hindu temples and shrines, are located just northward of the city. Kuala Lumpur’s main airport is Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Good to know is that Grab rideshare does operate in Kuala Lumpur, with service to-and-from the airport. Rapid KL is the city’s rapid transit subway/monorail system. Keep in mind that the Kuala Lumpur region is predominately Muslim, though women travelers will have no problem wearing dresses in tourist areas or bikinis at the beach. If visiting places such as temples. however, women will need to dress appropriately. Also, refrain from romantic engagements (public displays of affection) while in public places. In Kuala Lumpur, currency is the Malaysian ringgit, cars travel on the left-hand side and the drinking age is 21 years old. Top events are Thaipusam, Wesak Day, Kaamatan and Gawai Harvest Festivals, Chinese New Year, Dragon Boat Festival, Malaysia Water Festival, Control World Expo and ARCHIDEX. Hotels in Kuala Lumpur are some of Southeast Asia’s best accommodations. Before we get to hotels in Kuala Lumpur, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.
A relatively young city, Kuala Lumpur is thought to have been founded in 1857 by the Malay Chief of Klang, Raja Abdullah, who sent Chinese tin miners to the area. Just prior to that time, in the 1820s, settlements likely existed at the Gombak-Klang river confluence. Chinese tin mining actually started in the area circa the 1840s. Originally, Kuala Lumpur was a small hamlet with a few houses and shops. The first relevant tin mine was opened at Ampang in eastern Kuala Lumpur. Despite setbacks from malaria, the Ampang tin mines proved successful. Hiu Siew and Yap Ah Sze, two traders from Luku, set up shops to trade provisions for tin. Thereafter, the city developed around Old Market Square. As competition for productive tin mines grew fierce, tin miners formed gangs, which fought frequently. Important leaders and groups in the 1860s were Yap Ah Loy, third Chinese Kapitan of Kuala Lumpur, Haji Mohamed Tahir, the Dato Dagang “chief of traders”, the Minangkabaus of Sumatra, who established tobacco plantations in the area, and Haji Mohamed Taib, who was involved in the early development of the Kampung Baru Malay enclave. Early Kuala Lumpur buildings, like in many other cities, were made of wood and thus were prone to catching fire. Flooding also became a problem. From 1867-1874, the Selangor Civil War, or Klang War, between Raja Abdullah loyalists (aided by the United Kingdom near the war’s end) and Raja Mahdi loyalist Sumatran groups resulted in a Raja Abdulla-faction victory, British residency of Selangor, and Selangor’s becoming part of the Federated Malay States circa 1895. British colonial administrator Frank Swettenham improved the city by cleaning up and widening the streets, and replacing wooden buildings with brick and tile. Shophouse architecture became a distinct characteristic of the area. In 1886, Swettenham initiated and completed a railway line between Kuala Lumpur and Klang. As the population increased, a Sanitary Board was created on May 14, 1890, which helped assuage diseases such as cholera. Between 1895 and 1903, Kuala Lumpur expanded from 0.25 square miles to 7.7 square miles. By 1924, the city spanned 20 square miles. In Selangor, the rubber industry developed in the early 20th century. Demand for car tires led to an economic boom. The Imperial Japanese Army, during World War II, captured the city on January 11, 1942. Following the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, General Seishirō Itagaki surrendered the city to British administration. In 1957, Malaysia gained independence from British rule by way of the Malayan Declaration of Independence. The 1946-1960 Malayan Emergency between British Empire / Commonwealth forces and Communist forces resulted in a Commonwealth forces victory. Communist forces retreated to the Malayan-Thai border. Becoming a Federal Territory in 1974, Kuala Lumpur reached 94 square miles. From 1968 to 1989, the Second Malayan Emergency led to the Peace Agreement of Hat Yai, which marked the end of the Communist insurgency in Malaysia. From the 1990s onward, major developments in the Klang Valley further extended the Kuala Lumpur metropolitan area. On March 1, 1996, the Petronas Towers were completed, followed by Merdeka 118 in November, 2023.
Commonly called KL and officially known as the Federal Territory of Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Lumpur is home to around 2 million “Kuala Lumpurians”. Malaysia’s national capital and largest city, Kuala Lumpur draws in around 9 million tourists annually. At street markets, haggling can result in lower prices. Kuala Lumpur’s most common monkey species is macaques, which will interact with visitors at tourist sites. While generally not harmful, macaques have been known to try and steal peoples’ belongings. The Parliament and Monarch of Malaysia are both based in Kuala Lumpur. Three of the world’s top-ten largest shopping malls can be found in The Garden City of Lights. Located in the Klang Valley, the larger Kuala Lumpur area is bordered by the Titiwangsa Mountains to the east, smaller mountain ranges to the north and south, and the Strait of Malacca to the west. Sumatra Island is also westward. Kuala Lumpur was once a Selangor State Government territory, but in 1974 split to form Malaysia’s first Federal Territory. Home to a tropical rainforest climate, Kuala Lumpur experiences warm-to-hot temperatures throughout the year. The low temperature has never fallen below 64 °F. Monsoon season occurs between October and March. Additional points of interest include Kuala Lumpur City Centre (KLCC), National Museum of Malaysia, St. John’s Cathedral, Sri Mahamariamman Temple, Merdeka 118, Sultan Abdul Samad Building, Bukit Bintang (shopping, entertainment, red-light district), Petaling Street (Chinatown), Tugu Negara (National Monument), Titiwangsa Lake Gardens and Saloma Link (pedestrian bridge). Local foods are durian, nasi lemak (rice dish cooked in coconut milk and pandan leaves), Ikan bakar (charcoal-grilled fish), char kway teow (flat noodles stir-fried with shrimp, sausage, oyster sauce, bean sprouts, chives, soy sauce and other ingredients) and roti canai (flatbread). Teh tarik (hot milk tea drink), toddy (palm wine), samsu liquor and tuak (rice wine) are popular drinks.. With some background information on the area, we’re ready for hotels in Kuala Lumpur that will help make for a memorable trip.

So there they are, hotels in Kuala Lumpur that will help make for a memorable trip. We hope you have found this information valuable and most importantly, that you enjoy your time in Malaysia!
You’ve given a very great amount of references. The photos are also pretty astounding. It amazes me how much we can see and live in the world today. From luxury bathhouses to inspiring views, there’s no stopping the creative minds of humanity and what we can do. Jalan Conlay’s needle point building reminds me of the same building structure around Niagara Falls and Seattle, Washington.
Adam you are totally right! Infrastructure and technology have advanced at such a rapid rate, and it will be interesting to see what the short-term future holds.
I love this website!!! Yesterday I came across this site when I was planning a vacation to Cape Town, South Africa. Those pent houses were gorgeous and I loved the views. My son wanted me to consider Malaysia instead. This selection of luxury pent houses does not disappoint.
My son would appreciate the city views. These pent houses match his preferences. However you have provided enough information that I can tell that I prefer Cape Town instead. Thank you for making a website were it is very easy to find information on the Pent houses that are available.
Wow thank you so much Sondra! Happy travelers to you wherever you may find yourself in the world 🙂
These vacation residences are simply stunning! And the views of Kuala Lumpur are spectacular. The descriptions of the hotel suites and the surrounding amenities provided a good feel for these areas.
My favorite hotel suite was the Penthouse KLCC. I loved that deck that was sheltered above yet offered expansive City Centre views. I also liked Lanson Place for its two story accommodations and high ceilings.
Petronas Towers are icons for their fascinating architecture. In fact, there are so many modern buildings in Kuala Lumpur.
Can you share a few words on the historic areas of the city where one can find traditional shopping and restaurants?
I had no idea that Kuala Lumpur had a Philharmonic Orchestra. That was fantastic. Now I want to visit Malaysia!
Edwin thank you so much! Penthouse KLCC is a great choice particularly if you enjoy a hot tub on the terrace with amazing city views. If you’re looking for traditional shopping and restaurants you might try Petaling Street.
Oh! I love the garden at Penthouse on 34! The view is incredible! And the fact that it’s 0.5 miles away from the Bank Negara Malaysia Museum and Art Gallery makes it perfect for us. I have already taken a virtual 360° museum tour at their website, but I can’t wait to go there in person. Thank you very much for highlighting this penthouse.
Thank you Henry! Taking a virtual tour is a great way to check out the sites beforehand.
All these pictures of hotels present in Kuala Lumpur are lovely and eye catching. Malaysia is a very nice place to go for tourism and education. I have two friends presently studying nursing in one of the reputable university in Malaria. They do send many mind blowing pictures of different amazing places they have visited to me. Am sure they would know the best among these hotel you have listed. This list would be very helpful for someone like me that might be going to kaula Lumpur for the first time.
Stella thank you for the comments! Glad you appreciated the information and happy travels 🙂
Wow, thank you for sharing this. I really love the list because it’s valuable to check out myself just in case if I will visit Malaysia some other time. It’s really cool to review this list again if I will do visit the country.
Because of that, I highly recommend your post since I never knew I could stay in these hotels less than $50 (the cheapest options) per night. Amazing.
Thank you so much Mecyll! Stop back anytime 🙂
Funny enough, my family and I stayed at the Mandarin Oriental the last time we took a trip to Malaysia. We stayed in many Mandarin Orientals in many countries we’ve been and it’s kind of an inside joke that we compare each Mandarin Oriental we’ve stayed at. I’m glad it’s on this list because it was pretty nice 🙂
Ann thank you so much for your insights! Mandarin is a top-notch hotel no matter where you are. Thank you again for stopping by and hope to see you back soon 🙂
You are right that Kuala Lumpur has some beautiful options for enjoying a luxurious stay in an exciting world-class city. I have many friends there, and they are always trying to convince me to come for a longer stay than a quick stopover so I can take the time to enjoy the visit properly.
I will do that at some point but when I do the place I prefer to overnight it will also be one that will itself provide some positive memories for the trip. The options that you have located and reviewed here are all worthy candidates in my eyes and any would do for me.
One thing that hit me as I was going through each for the features and the amenities that you will get access to was the extremely reasonable price that each will cost. Compared to some of the other cities that I have visited the costs are remarkably low for what you get.
Thanks for doing the heavy lifting for us when it comes to finding a super nice place to stay when in Kuala Lumpur, you have made some excellent suggestions. It is no wonder that I keep coming back to check out your advice and recommendations! They are wonderful!
Thank you so much Dave and it’s great to see you back. Your comments are always appreciated 🙂
Hey Hey Malaysian here!
I’ve been to all of these hotels and residences, in fact, I pass through them almost every week on business meetings and events and I can definitely vouch that you’ve got those top-notch stays right! From a citizen’s point of view (Since I’ve been to all of them), all the other places mentioned such as The FACE suite and Regalia has a beautiful overall view of the Twin Towers.
But Mandarin Oriental has the best location of all, it’s exactly beside the Twin Towers and the Convention Centre that you can go there from the hotel itself! When KLCC does an event at their exhibition centre, the whole of KL will get congested because it’s the second biggest convention centre in Malaysia. But if you stay at Mandarin Oriental, you can save a lot of time because it’s literally beside the convention centre itself. You’ll literally arrive at the centre the moment you step foot outside!
The food’s good and I usually book there on New Year’s eve to have the best view of fireworks since KLCC will usually host it in their park which is again, beside the Mandarin Oriental. And just to let you guys know, this is not a sponsored comment, I just love it there so I’m super excited to see my hang out place on the blog 😀
Riaz thank you for your insights! So glad to see you again and to hear that these hotels hit home. They are all really beautiful and you should be proud to live in such an equally beautiful place 🙂
Thank you so much for recommending this penthouses in Malaysia. I am planning to go there with my family and we haven’t found a suitable accommodation for us. The Penthouse KLCC is absolutely our choice to go. Beautiful view, affordable price, and its location is near Petronas Twin Tower. I will tell my family and book this penthouse as soon as possible. Thank you so much.
Hi Alblue, thank you for the comments and for sharing this with your family!
Awesome penthouse! I love Malaysia because, they mix luxury and affordability and these penthouse are just another proof, $17, really ridiculous!!
And all of the penthouses you selected are we located, always near businesses to help us tourist to by whatever need and to get in contact with the locals. This will help to make news friends and learn the local culture.
Thanks for another great discovery.
The pricing is pretty outstanding Adyns! Thank you for the comments as they are always appreciated 🙂
I enjoyed coming back you your website, but I think you might cost me some money. Now I want to plan a trip to Malaysia. It’s interesting how the value of money is so different in every country. If some of those Malaysia suites were in Dubai, they would probably cost $2000 a night or more.
My first choice was the Banyon because of how the bedroom was situated with such a spectacular view, but on looking further I see that it has no kitchenette which is important to me when I travel.
So my next choice would be the Penthouse KLCC. $188 a night for the presidential penthouse suite? What a bargain. I paid more for a three-star hotel in Manhattan. I rest my case about the difference in price between countries.
Surprising to me that the Banyan is $673 a night and Penthouse LJCC is only $188 with more amenities. I can’t quite figure that one out. Maybe it has to do with location.
I really enjoy your website and hope you do a post on Bali and Singapore sometime. I had a holiday booked for two weeks in Bali years ago and before I could leave, there was a bombing in a night club there and the Canadian government listed it as a no travel zone for safety reasons. I should’ve gone anyway. Probably would’ve been the only one in my hotel and would’ve been treated like a king.
Ray hah! It is interesting to see how currency differs in various parts of the world. Malaysia is one of the better ones for getting bang for your buck. Please feel free to check out Singapore here and key an eye out for easier navigation through the website coming soon.
I love Kuala Lumpur. It is a city full of character on its own. The Petronas Twin Towers still dominate its skyline fora very good reason. It is synonymous with Malaysia. I often stay with friends and or relatives when going in KL. I have never tried these hotels, but it is deffinitely worth trying out. Looks like Mandarin Oriental is good choice.
Hi Arwil and thank you for the comments. Mandarin Oriental with a club suite is definitely a solid choice.
Staying at hotels and penthouse in a vacay is indeed convenient for the family or groups. All, if not most of your needs will be attended to which is great because you want your travels stress free and enjoyable. Kuala Lumpur is one of the places to be in Asia. While it’s great, there are still some things you may want to consider during vacation, just like any other country.
Your hotel and penthouse suggestion are all awesome. It’a modern but still exude the Asian vibe. Among the ones you presented, I think I like the Penthouse KLCC . For one, it’s affordable with the basic package included. Who wouldn’t want to experience looking at the spectacular view, right? The FACE suites however, is in the luxurious-affordable bracket and having an infinity pool is a plus. Since it’s close to the airport, You never have to worry of getting there in time. Thanks for showing us these amazing hotels and penthouses. It makes planning for travel easier.
Hi MissusB and thank you for the comments! The Penthouse KLCC view is amazing you are spot-on! Good point on The FACE Suites‘ proximity to the airport. Either would make a solid choice 🙂
I was thinking about visiting Kuala Lumpur in a few months from now with my girlfriend and another couple and we were looking for a nice place to stay in the city.
This Fraser Place seems awesome as well as pretty affordable. But it’s kind of far from the airport.
Do you know if there are any buses that go directly from the airport somewhere near this hotel?
Thank you in advance for your help!
Hi Harry, have you considered Express Rail Link to connect you by train to and from the city? Otherwise a rental car might be the best bet especially since The Fraser Place has free parking. The airport is, unfortunately, far from penthouse accommodations.
Hello ,
You have created a wonderful site. This article is so useful for me and my friends. We are under discussion to make a long trip to Asia and in particular to Malaysia. When I visited your site I felt impatient to visit Kuala Lumpur.
I think that Penthouse KLCC would be the most ideal for us. It’s located near the most popular attractions of the city, and especially the Petronas Twin Towers, I would always like to visit. The price is very very good.
Thanks a lot.
Thodoris
Thank you water life! The Penthouse KLCC has an unbelievable view, and price!
Wow there are so many amazing places, And the pictures are spectacular. I wish i lived in something as nice as these. What I can’t get over are the prices per night. Most of these are extremely reasonable. and on par with lower quality hotels here in the usa price wise. I’ve been looking for somewhere to take the family to for vacation where they could enjoy themselves and feel like they live in luxury for a while. Thanks to you I think I know where our next vacation will be! Thanks for all the great information!!!
Thank you Arron!
Hi Pentrental
All I can say is AMAZING! every time I see a post of yours. They are very informative and the pictures are out of this world. Any world traveler needs to see your site.
The reader doesn’t have to guess what they have to pay per night you make it very clear. You give people options as well. Well done again!
Much Success
Eric
Thank you so much Eric and same to you!
Wow that first photo is really amazing with a spiral staircase and everything. There was actually a song when I was young that had the word Kuala Lumpur in it. As always I like the first one because of the fitness center. Is that some kind of AstroTurf on the ground? That could be nice as opposed to other kinds of floors. I like that one because you get to Lookout off of the Rooftop. Thanks for all these great travel ideas and inspiring me to want to travel.
Jen great question. It is turf yes, so if that’s something that interests you then all the better to go along with the fitness center. Thank you for the comments and hope to see you back again soon!
Hi Pentrental,
When I think of booking a hotel in KL, your article just jumped out from my search on google. It’s so on time and I have to say your article gives some good suggestion for my trip.
Love the idea you provided ranging from cheap accommodation to luxury hotels, it could be benefits to all kinds of travelers. I am over the age of backpacker that we see quite often in Southeast Asia, but I sometimes like to try the hostel experiences.
I think I will go for Mandarin Oriental this time since it’s right in CBD and close to every spot that my family wanna visit.
Thanks a lot,
Matt
Thank you Matt! Glad to see you found us on Google and that you found a very nice choice in Mandarin Oriental 😀
This is quite astonishing I must confess. These hotels are simy the best one can ask for, considering the services its quite worth the amount you pay. I’m involved in processing visa for people and I have lots of customers who travels to Malaysia lot. From this moment I’ll make sure these hotels are top listed when I suggest an hotel for then to lodge in. I’m glad to have come across this wonderful post.
Hi Dane! Thank you so much for the comments and recommendations 😊
Oh my God. This is the peak of luxury. Starting with the beautiful view of that awesome penthouse at penthouse at 24 is awesome. Knowing that it is close to the Galleria and the museum is perfect for anyone that is going for a vacation. If I wasn’t already on a vacation, I would definitely go to Kuala Lumpur. The views in this beautiful city in Malaysia is awesome and I love the feel of luxury I get from the pictures.
Thank you Henderson, the view really is amazing you are totally right 🤩
This hotel residents are really stunning beautiful i must say… I’m planning my next vacation for Malaysia and I think I have found what suites my style and preference. my love for classical peripherals and top notch things, one of the Kuala Lumpur hotels would have to host me for my vacation. The view of this residents are so beautiful and great without doubt and I yet to pick from the list of recommendations by this review. I must say a big thank you for recommending one if the best in the world for me and my family. Kudos, and I hope to see more of your posts.
Thank you Willy!
Hi there,
Wow, beautiful hotels! I am planning to go to Malaysia next year with my children. I still didn’t make any reservation so far. I always wait until the last minute. Sometimes they are great deals:) I didn’t know there were such beautiful hotels to stay. I need something affordable that offer comfort, and that looks nice. I really like 1020, Jalan Sultan Ismall. This one seems to be the perfect hotel for us.$53 per night looks unreal for what you get. Is the price remain the same or it fluctuate with the season? I can’t wait to get there:)
Thank you for this excellent post!
Daniella thank you so much. The price shouldn’t change too much, but please try to book as far in advance as possible to get the best price. Happy travels to you and your children 😊
I have been wanting to visit Kuala Lumpur since the Petronas Towers were completed many years ago. I cannot even imaging the views from the tallest heights of the building! Renting a penthouse seems like a “must-do” in this town of dazzling skylines. The Weld seems like a fantastic location with a balcony with dreamy views!
Aly nice to see you again and thanks for the comments on these Kuala Lumpur hotels. Renting a penthouse in KL gives you a chance to really appreciate the city’s skyline. You are correct in saying that the area near The Weld shopping mall is a fantastic location as you can also find Aquaria KLCC and KLCC Park in the area.
