Hotels in Madrid

Hotels in Madrid feature elegant accommodations in a destination whose nicknames have included  “Town and Court”, “The Forum” and “Bear and the Strawberry Tree”. Known for its restaurants, nightlife, shopping, museums, art galleries, palaces, historical buildings, gardens, plazas, unique neighborhoods, late lunches and dinners (tapas), royals and Flamenco dancing, Madrid is located at Spain’s mid-point on the Manzanares River. So as not to look like a tourist while experiencing Madrid, one might dress up and avoid wearing flip flops, socks with sandals, our shorts outside of the summer months. Keep in mind that it is considered rude for waiters to bring a check prior to a diner’s request, so it’s best to say “la cuenta” to your waiter or waitress when you are ready to leave a restaurant. Take heed not to disrupt the siesta, or afternoon nap. Keep in mind also that madrileños (people from Madrid) typically eat a big lunch and then tapas late at night. Indeed, Madrid is a party city; as such, 1 AM or later is the recommended time for entering a night club. Madrid’s currency is the Euro and its drinking age is 18 years old. Sobrino de Botín, the world’s oldest continuously operating restaurant, which was referenced in the classic Hemingway novel The Sun Also Rises, has been in business since 1725. World-renowned for its football, Madrid’s three professional clubs are Real Madrid, Atletico Madrid and Rayo Vallecano. Madrid festivals include La Virgen de la Paloma, Epiphany, Madrid Carnival, Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, Mad Cool Festival, Primavera Sound Madrid, DCODE Festival, Tomavistas, Boombastic Festival, Reggaeton Beach Festival, JazzMadrid, Semana Santa, Nochevieja (New Year’s), Dos de Mayo and San Isidro Festival. Hotels in Madrid are top-notch in European luxury. Before we get to hotels in Madrid, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.

Dating to the prehistoric era, the modern-day Madrid area was, at various times, home to a Celtic Carpetani settlement, Roman villas, a Visigoth basilica and three Visigoth necropoleis. The first historical reference to an established settlement comes from the Muslim age, when Cordobese Emir Muhammad I built a fortress near the river Manzanares. In 1083, Madrid was seized by Alfonso VI of León and Castile, which displaced Muslims and Jews to the suburbs while Christians occupied the city’s center. The Courts of Castile convened in Madrid circa 1309 under Ferdinand IV. In 1521, the Battle of Villalar, fought between Royalist Castilians and Comuneros, resulted in a Royalist victory. Although extreme poverty existed during the 17th century, corrales de comedias theatre was a bright spot during that time. The War of the Spanish Succession saw the city change hands amongst Bourbon Spain, the “Austracist” army and the Habsburg army for relatively brief periods. Philip V built the Royal Palace, the Royal Tapestry Factory and the main Royal Academies, while Charles III constructed street lighting, sewers, cemeteries, cultural institutions and monuments. The Peninsular War circa 1807 was cause for Spanish nationalism against French invaders. In the late 1800s and early 1900s, railway transports, electric street lighting and new suburbs were introduced. The Spanish Constitution of 1931 set Spain’s official capital exclusively to Madrid. The Spanish Civil War of 1936, fought between Republicans and Nationalists, resulted in a Nationalist victory. Following the Spanish Civil War and during Francoist Spain, Madrid experienced both ration coupons and an economic boom. After the fall of the Francoist regime, the new Spanish Constitution of 1978 confirmed Madrid as Spain’s capital, and reestablished democratic elections.

Spain’s capital and most populous city, Madrid has a population of around 3.3 million people today. The third largest city in the European Union, Madrid lies on the River Manzanares. A center for entertainment, fashion, arts, science, sports, politics and education, Madrid ranks as the world’s tenth most livable city.  Francisco Goya, one of Spain’s most influential romantic painters, spent much of his life in Madrid. One of the world’s most renowned football cities, Madrid is home to three professional football clubs: Real Madrid plays its games at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium on the north side; Atletico Madrid plays its games at Metropolitano Stadium on the east side; Rayo Vallecano plays its games at Estadio de Vallecas on the south east side. The Bear and the Strawberry Tree’s climate is Mediterranean, with cool winters and hot summers. High temperatures range from 90 degrees Fahrenheit in July, to 50 degrees in January. Major points of interest include Gran Vía, Plaza Mayor, AZCA, CTBA, Puerta de Alcalá, Royal Palace, Almudena Cathedral, Royal Theatre, National Library of Spain, Palace of Communication, Almudena Cathedral, Palace of Longoria, Las Ventas, Market of San Miguel, Plaza de España, Retiro Park, Madrid Zoo, Parque de Atracciones de Madrid, Madrid Stock Exchange, Golden Triangle of Art, National Archaeological Museum of Madrid, Royal Academy of Fine Arts of San Fernando, Reina Sofía National Art Museum, Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, Museum of the Americas, National Museum of Natural Sciences, Naval Museum, Museum of Lázaro Galdiano, Teatro Real and Caja Mágica. Popular foods include cocido madrileño (a traditional chickpea-based stew), huevos estrellados (a fried-egg-based dish servied with French fries and meat) and callos a la madrileñaa (a beef tripe dish). Be sure to drink beer if you want to blend in with the locals. Sherry, mojitos and horchata are also popular drinks. Now that we have some background information on the city, it’s time for hotels in Madrid that will help make for a memorable experience.

  1. Very informative post on Madrid hotels in Spain, good guide. I’ve personally always wanted to visit Barcelona but your guide intrigues my interests and make Madrid seem very appealing. What especially caught my eye was the Gran Meliá Palacio de los Duques, Cuesta Santo Domingo. The fact it is near the Spanish Royal Palace is really cool, I absolutely want to see that. And so many nearby places to visit, very cool. Do you have a favorite spot in Madrid? Thanks again and have a good day.

  2. Thank you for this information. I’ve traveled a lot in my life and this article is a gem. Most Recently, I went to Romania. Though in todays world it is much easier to get hotel information than in years past because of various travel sites, having a resource like yours is valuable. Not only did you highlight what looks like a great hotel, but you gave some interesting information about what to see and where to go. I’ve started planning my next Euro vacation and now thanks to you, I’ll add Madrid to my list of places to look into.

  3. That is some really fascinating background of Madrid. I see why it is named the tenth best city to live in. These group packages look very affordable. Madrid seems to have a lot of restaurants, I guess people love to eat out that much and spend time in the beautiful town. I am surprised that Eurostars Madrid Tower costs that little per person. The ambiance and the view is to die for! I also love the style of Gran Mella Palaclo. Even for that price the outside relaxation setting is so soothing. Thank you for great recommendation as always.

  4. And look at that, yet another good post!  It’s odd, you have three different countries I’m considering vacationing to.  I wouldn’t be surprised to see Italy and Ireland on this site soon, because you are checking my list off pretty good!  Madrid is in my top two list right now, because Spain in general has a beautiful history to it.  I really like the Gran hotel because it looks historical, and this may have sold me!  Now I’ll let my wife check it out, though she is set on Ireland!

  5. Madrid is a wonderful city where I have had the pleasure of visiting a few times at different times of the year. I was able to experience the heat of the Summer months and the cooler months as well, and of course, the city is resplendent with places to see and things to do. Having a guide from you on the best hotels is useful for upcoming trips there.

I will likely try the Eurostars Madrid Tower, as the price is reasonable, the place looks great, and there is a lot to see and do in that area. I also have not spent much time in the area where it is located so it should be fun for me and my fellow travelers! I always find what I am looking for here, thanks for that!

  6. I had to come back and make another comment as I was so taken by your post. Madrid is a place I have always loved and I would like to take my family there in the Spring. Of the many options that you have covered, is there one that would fit well for that time of year?

My family is quite large, we will be approximately 9 altogether, some will not be able to travel with us but most will. They like good restaurants and sightseeing, so I will select one from your list for sure, it is just difficult to pick the ideal hotel.

I do enjoy your posts and have so many ideas for many of the cities that I get to for my business and pleasure travel, and Madrid is right up there with my favorite spots in the world to visit. The hotels you cover are always ones that I would select myself too, which is why I keep coming back. Thanks!

  7. Thank you very much for this informative article about Madrid hotels in Spain I’ve traveled a lot in my life and this article is exceptional.wow I am so surprised that Eurostar cost so little for a single person.i never knew Madrid had a lot of restaurants, I guess people love to eat out that much and spend time in the beautiful town.thanks for this important article.

  8. Thank you for your post. It is a timely article for me. In the coming Christmas season, we, the family of six, are planning to go to Madrid, Spain for a winter vacation. We did some search, but it is hard for us to make final hotel reservation.

Here comes your article, which contains full information of hotels in Madrid. I am happy that it is no doubt we will have hotel within our budget. We plan to spend $100/day/person. Based on your hotel cost, it is no problem for us to control our budget in the planned range.

We would like to spend more time on the beaches and would be nice to have hotel closing to them. Do you have hotel near beaches?

It is kind of you sharing this useful information with us.

  9. Extremely educational post on Madrid hotel in Spain, great guide. I’ve by and by constantly needed to visit Barcelona however your guide interests my inclinations and cause Madrid to appear to be engaging. What particularly got my attention was the Gran Meliá Palacio de los Duques, Cuesta Santo Domingo. The reality it is close to the Spanish Royal Palace is truly cool, I completely need to see that. Thus numerous close by spots to visit, cool. Do you have a most loved spot in Madrid? Much appreciated again and have a decent day.

    1. Hi arzu great choices! Most loved places arguably could be Gran Via, Royal Theatre and Santiago Bernabeu (where Real Madrid plays)

  10. Interesting and informative post about Madrid, the attractions and the variety of hotels selected.

Spain is a beautiful country. I love Barcelona, it’s so vibrant and bustling but we seem to have overlooked Madrid for some reason. Having seen your post makes me realise that Madrid should be on our list of places to visit and you have made it easy to select a hotel that has the attributes we require as well as being closer to the main points of interest for us.

    Excellent and helpful post.

  11. I’ve always wanted to go to Madrid for once, well that has been a wish I never saw coming through just because I don’t work towards achieving it, who knows next year maybe I’ll go. This information is very useful and will relatively be of great help, I’ve heard of how fun Madrid is but I believe getting a good accommodation during your stay will make it more interesting, the hotels here are nice but a bit expensive but considering comfort they are just too good.

  12. Sure, getting an hotel in a city like Madrid wouldn’t be an easy task in any way and perhaps we may not get the perfect fit based on budget and desire too; it is no brainer as a result of this article, thanks for sharing it.

I don’t like high budget hotel bills, All I need is a calm environment with free WiFi and good food (as I don’t joke with my tommy 🍗😋). I see there are so many fit for me in this list.

  13. ‘’De Madrid al cielo’’, my beloved Madrid. You guessed it’s my favorite city? It’s exciting how the development of new hotels went to another level in this past years. Penthouse Cuzco Castellana looks very inviting to me, especially because it’s so close to Paseo de la Castellana – I lovelovelove Castellana 😊  I’ve already stayed in Eurostars Madrid Tower – the view is soooo incredible!

But I have to say that I am curious to check out Four Seasons when it opens in the beginning of the next year…

Well, it’s time for me to start planning another trip to the capital 🙂
