Hotels in Montreal

Hotels in Montreal offer excellent accommodations in a destination with nicknames to include “The City of a Hundred Steeples” (Mark Twain), Canada’s “Sin City” (Prohibition Era) and, more commonly, “MTL”. Known for its hockey, museums, riverfront attractions, squares, parcs (parks), rues (streets), convention / event centres, theatres, scenic spots, gardens, churches, basilicas, shopping malls, boutiques, brewpubs, restaurants, cocktail bars, cafes, salons, spas and nightlife, Montreal is located down-river from Quebec’s capital city, Quebec City, and across-river from the city of Saint-Lambert. Set on an island in the Saint Lawrence River, Montreal is the Canadian province of Quebec’s largest city. Surrounding / bordering Montreal, points of interest include CF Fairview Pointe Claire (shopping mall), Premium Outlets Montréal (outlet mall), Mall Champlain (shopping mall – across the river), Parc de la Cité (park – across the river – pond / fields / woodlands / trails / kids’ play equipment / café), Ile des Moulins (park), Parc de l’Île-Lebel (park), Marché Toit Rouge (produce market), Lieu historique national du Canal-de-Chambly (historical landmark – across the river), Parc-nature de la Pointe-aux-Prairies (park), Du Domaine Vert Park, Mirage Golf Club, Golf Club de l’Île de Montréal (golf club), Fort Chambly National Historic Site (reenactment site – across the river), La Ferme Forget (farmers’ market), Tremblay Woodlands (nature preserve – across the river), The trails of the Peninsula (hiking area), Vignoble Rivière du Chêne (winery), Lanaudière Golf Center (golf club), Lacs Fauvel (nature preserve), SQDC – Saint-Hubert — Boul. des Promenades (cannabis store – across the river), Club De Golf Rosemère Fontainebleau (golf club), La Vallée du Richelieu Golf Club (golf club – across the river), The Royal Montreal Golf Club and Hillsdale Golf & Country Club. Within the city, major attractions are Vieux-Port de Montréal (tourist attraction), Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal, Mount Royal Park (trails / lake with boat rentals / city views), Montreal Botanical Garden, Centre Bell (arena), Place des Arts (performing arts theater), Schwartz’s Deli (restaurant), Montreal Eaton Centre (shopping mall), Saint Joseph’s Oratory of Mount Royal (Catholic church), La Ronde (theme park), Casino de Montréal, Montreal Biodome (science museum), The Montreal Museum of Fine Arts (art museum), La Fontaine Park, Montreal Olympic Park (Olympic stadium), Galeries d’Anjou (shopping mall), Marché Atwater (farmers’ market), Circuit Gilles Villeneuve (car racing track), Montreal Convention Centre, Kondiaronk Belvedere (scenic spot), Parc Jarry (park), Parc Angrignon (park – picnic tables / walking trails / a pond / playgrounds), Montreal Museum of Archaeology and History (archaeological museum), Parc Jean-Drapeau (park), Montreal Science Centre (science museum) and Place Montreal Trust (shopping mall). Montreal is a top North American international event host. Boasting one of Canada’s largest column-free exhibition halls, Montréal Convention Centre spans 7 floors at over 500,000 square feet altogether, with 113 multipurpose rental spaces. World-renowned Cirque de Soleil is headquartered in Montreal. Located southwesterly of downtown on the Island of Montreal, Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport is the city’s main airport, while Montreal Metro is its rubber-tired, underground rapid transit system. Good to know is that Uber rideshare does operate in Montreal, with service encompassing the airport. Canada has two official languages, French and English, although Montreal’s official language is French. One of the “Original Six” NHL hockey teams and winners of a league-leading 24 Stanley Cups, the Montreal Canadiens play at Centre Bell just south of downtown. When traveling in Montreal, keep in mind that right-hand turns are not permitted on the island due to a high number of pedestrians. Montreal has four-way vehicle stop signs, at which the first vehicle to stop advances first, while, in the case of two or more vehicles stopping simultaneously, the vehicle on the right has the right of way. Traffic cameras in certain areas will display “you’re-on-camera” signs. On Metro escalators, the right side is for standing while the left side is for walking. Before getting out of a car, watch for cyclists. Make sure to pay attention when crossing the street at crosswalks. During winter, roadways can get icy. Although politeness is always appreciated, try not to hold doors open for too long if its cold and windy outside. If someone is speaking to you in French and you don’t understand, tell them you don’t speak French. A 15% tip generally is customary in restaurants. In Montreal, currency is the Canadian Dollar, cars travel on the right-hand side and the drinking age is 18 years old. Happy hour, or 5 à 7s, is the best time to find food and drink deals. Top events include Igloofest, Osheaga Music and Arts Festival, Lasso Montréal, Les Francos de Montréal, Montréal en Lumière, Montreal Fireworks Festival (world’s largest fireworks festival), MURAL Festival, Montreal World Film Festival, Festival International de Jazz de Montréal, Montréal Complètement Cirque, Just for Laughs, Mondial de la bière, La Grande Dégustation de Montréal, Montreal Streetfood Festival, Canadian Grand Prix, Marathon de Montréal, Montreal Comiccon, Medieval Passion Fair (Laval suburb) and Montreal Fetish Weekend. Hotels in Montreal are some of Canada’s best accommodations. Before we get to hotels in Montreal, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.

Evidenced by archaeological findings, First Nations natives are thought to have occupied the island of Montreal since at least 4,000 years ago, and began cultivating maze around the year 1000 AD. Two centuries before the French arrived, the Saint Lawrence Iroquoians had established the village of Hochelaga at the foot of Mount Royal. On October 2, 1535, French explorer Jacques Cartier visited Hochelaga and estimated the population at over a thousand. Migration, European disease epidemics and intertribal wars were likely causes of the St Lawrence Iroquoians’ disappearance from the area, as reported by French explorer Samuel de Champlain circa 1603. In 1611, de Champlain set up a fur trading post named La Place Royale at present-day Pointe-à-Callière. Roman Catholics established a presence in the area in 1639. Montreal’s original name was Ville-Marie, which was founded on May 17, 1642, when French military officer Paul Chomedey de Maisonneuve became the settlement’s first governor. Shortly thereafter, the settlement was hit with Iroquois raids. About a decade after Ville-Marie’s founding, de Maisonneuve returned to France to round-up 100 volunteers to help boost the settlement’s colonial population. If the effort had failed, Ville-Marie was to be abandoned. The fur trade helped Ville-Marie survive, and by 1685 the settlement had grown to roughly 600 colonists. Also, the settlement benefitted as it became a base for further exploration. New France’s worst massacre occurred in 1689, when English-allied Iroquois attacked the Island of Montreal’s undefended, small settlement of Lachine. Part of the Beaver Wars, the Lachine massacre saw around 1,500 Mohawk warriors surprise attack Lachine on August 5th, resulting in 250 colonist casualties. In the early 18th century, Sulpician Order priests persuaded the Mohawks to move away from Ville-Marie’s fur trading post and settle at Kahnewake, Kanesatake and Akwesasne, all three of which remain present-day Mohawk territories. Until 1760, the territory remained in French control, but subsequently was surrendered to Great Britain following the Seven Years’ War. On November 13, 1775, during the American Revolution, Montreal fell to American forces led by Major General Richard Montgomery. American Continental Army Major General and eventual turn-coat Benedict Arnold, following Montgomery’s death at the Battle of Quebec, overtook American command of Montreal in April 1776. Southwest of Montreal, The Battle of the Cedars from May 18–27, 1776 between Great Britain / Quebec Haudenosaunee and The United Colonies resulted in a British-Haudenosaunee victory. Great Britain Captain George Forster subsequently advanced to Fort Senneville, one of Montreal’s outlying forts, but eventually withdrew to Quinze-Chênes. Benedict Arnold, previously entrenched in Montreal’s borough of Lachine, chased Forster and after a few skirmishes, a prisoner exchange was negotiated, though was never followed-through by Arnold. Benedict Arnold abandoned Montreal in June 1776, attempting to burn it down in the process, and withdrew to Fort Ticonderoga in New York. In 1832, Montreal was incorporated as a city. Two significant developments around this time were the Lachine Canal, which allowed ships to bypass the Lachine Rapids, and the Victoria Bridge, which established Montreal as a major railway hub. In the Golden Square Mile at the foot of Mount Royal, Montreal business leaders started to build homes in the 1850s, and by 1860, Montreal had become British North America’s largest municipality, as well as Canada’s economic and cultural center. Potable drinking water became a problem during the 19th century, when the city’s population increased rapidly. Drinking water had, until that point, been taken directly from the city’s harbor. A relatively significant increase in waterway traffic, however, deteriorated water quality. In the mid-1840s, the City of Montreal installed cisterns, which would hold and help purify St. Lawrence River water to be transported to desired locations. From 1844 to 1849, Montreal was the Province of Canada’s capital city. The city lost its status as capital, however, when a Tory mob, in opposition to the controversial Rebellion Losses Bill, burned down the city’s Parliament building on April 25, 1849. During World War I, an internment camp was set up at Immigration Hall. Following the war, prohibition in the United States benefitted Montreal taverns. Montreal’s Red-Light District, centered on the intersection of Saint Laurent Boulevard and Saint Catherine Street in the borough of Ville-Marie, helped give Montreal its Prohibition-era nickname, “Sin City”. During World War II, Canada’s federal government held Montreal Mayor Camillien Houde in a prison camp for his protests against conscription, and his urging of Montrealers to disobey the federal government’s registry of all men and women. In exile, the Luxembourg royal family resided in Montreal during the Second World War. Montreal’s population exceeded 1 million by 1951. In 1959, the Saint Lawrence Seaway’s opening, which allowed ships to bypass Montreal, ended the city’s economic dominance over other Canadian cities. Skyscrapers, expressways and a subway system developed during the 1960s, and Montreal’s hosting of the 1967 World’s Fair naturally helped boost the city’s economy. Unsurprisingly, given the city’s history, tensions between the French and English cultures ushered social and political changes during the 1970s. The 1976 October Crisis resulted in the departure of many of the city’s businesses and people. During the same year, Montreal hosted the 1976 Summer Olympics. On January 1, 2022, Montreal merged with 27 surrounding municipalities to form a unified city, which encompassed the entire Island of Montreal.

Located at the Saint Lawrence and Ottawa Rivers’ confluence, the Island of Montreal is home to over 2 million “Montrealers”. Named after its triple-peaked Mount Royal, which tops-off at 761 feet above sea level, Montreal is home to many pedestrian ways and hiking paths. In winter, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing make for fine outdoor activities. MTL neighborhoods, once independent cities, range in styles from cobblestoned, to French-colonial, to Gothic-revival to bohemian. In 2019, Montreal accounted for over half of Quebec’s overall GDP (CA$234 billion of CA$425.3 billion). Subdivided into neighborhoods, 19 large boroughs comprise Canada’s second-largest city. About 60% of Montreal’s population is bilingual in French and English. Also at around 60% is the city’s largest demographic, which is of European descent. Catholicism is the area’s predominate religion. Apart from hockey, the Montréal Alouettes of the Canadian Football League have won 8 championships. Home to a warm-summer humid continental climate, Montreal has warm / hot and humid summers, and snowy, cold and sometimes bitter / icy winters. Summer highs average close to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, while winters average in the lower 20s. Montreal’s record low is -36 degrees (-49 with the wind chill). Additional points of interest include Downtown Montreal, Tour de la Bourse (skyscraper / Montreal Exchange). Old Montreal (neighborhood est. 17th century), Place Jacques-Cartier (square), Place d’Armes (square), Montreal City Hall, McGill University, Université de Montréal, Port of Montreal Cruise Terminal and Habitat 67. Local foods are maple donuts, bagels, smoked meats, cheese curds, fois gras poutine (French fries made with duck fat), pâté chinois (similar to Shepard’s pie), tourtiere (meat pie traditional at Christmastime), cretons (breakfast pork spread), tarte au sucre (sugar pie) and pouding chomeur (maple pudding dessert created during the Great Depression). Around since John Molson began exporting it from Montreal circa 1800, whiskey is popular to this day. The Canadian Caesar is a type of bloody Mary that pairs well with brunch, while lager beer such as Molson is widely enjoyed, particularly at Canadiens games. Coffee and hot chocolate are also hot items during winter months. With some background information on the area, it’s time for hotels in Montreal that will help make for a exciting trip.

So there they are, hotels in Montreal that will help make for a memorable trip. We hope you have found this information valuable and most importantly, that you enjoy your time in Canada!

42 Replies to “Hotels in Montreal”

  1. Hi! Thank you for this Canadian edition here at Pentrental! My top choice is Hotel Le Crystal in downtown Montreal. I’m glad there is a vegan restaurant near by called Code Vert. And I’ll love the saltwater pool! Cool indeed! But what I like the most is that it’s just 9 miles away from the Montreal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport!

  2. My favourite is The Hotel Epik Montreal

This has the kind of feel I really love as it gives a sense of history with elegance and a kind of country feel so when I head over to Canada this is my 1st stop to really feel like the successful Person I am becoming with my business so thank you

I really enjoy this website and there are so many places I want to visit so best I get back to work to make the $’s needed

  3. Once again, I have found your website to be very helpful in planning a trip to Montreal.

Hotel Le Crystal, located in the downtown area sounds fantastic.   The saltwater pool, hot tub , spa and sauna would all provide a way to unwind at the end of the day.  There is so much to see and do in downtown Montreal.  This hotels sounds to be conveniently located.

Should it be booked, it sounds like Montreal offers some other great options. Thank you for your assistance.

    1. Sondra the amenities at Hotel Le Crystal are outstanding indeed. Montreal really has some fine local attractions pretty much at any of these locations. It’s nice to see you again 🙂

  4. Wow! I am amazed at those prices, especially when you divide the cost between two and more people. I just looked on Google Maps and I didn’t realize Montreal is a 5 and a half hour drive from where I live here in NJ. Interstate 87 which I have been on countless times, goes straight up from here right into Montreal.

I am definitely going to consider some of these locations once I can get some of my friends to take a road trip. Montreal is one of two Canadian cities I want to visit, Vancouver being the other. This is mainly because it is an eastern city I have yet to visit, been to Toronto already, and because my favorite performance group Cirque du Soleil is based there.

Do you know of any local performing arts centers nearby any of the hotels you have mentioned where Cirque du Soleil might be performing? I have seen many of their live shows, but it would be great to see them in Canada too. Thanks again for this post and I await your answer.

  5. Wow! Very beautiful places. I would have to say that Hotel Kutuma would be my favorite out of these. They all look amazing but Hotel Kutuma just drew me in. The place looks so elegant and cozy and unique rolled into one. I would love to take my wife on a trip there. Thank you for doing this article, now it gives me more options for a future trip. Take care

  6. I’ve been hearing a lot of beautiful things about how vibrant Hotels Montreal is. Awesome post! Cool indeed! It sounds like Montreal offers some other great options. Hotel Le Crystal, located in the downtown area sounds fantastic. The saltwater pool, Hot tub, Spa, and sauna would all provide a way to unwind at the end of the day. This hotel sounds to be conveniently located. I’m glad there is a vegan restaurant nearby called Code Vert. But what I like the most is that it’s just 9 k.m away from the Montreal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport!

Thanks for all these fully detailed recommendations. It will be helpful as I plan my holiday…

  7. Hey, I am thinking of visiting Montreal within the next few months and I am looking for a nice affordable place to stay.

I would actually like it to be outside of the city, near nature but not too far away in case we want to visit and take a tour of the city.

Which one of those hotels/suites would cover my needs? I am open to further recommendations as well!

BTW, I don’t really care about the luxuries since we are going to be on the road most of our time there.

Thank you in advance for the help!

  8. I visited Montreal, CA, 20 years. Your site brought back great memories. I feel as if I have visited today. The combination of great images, amenities, and pricing complete the post. The directions may be hard to follow for some and in my opinion, the address and a map snippet would improve this post.

  9. I like the Plateau Mont Royal District, it’s spacious which is good for family and friends. I hope a time will come I can visit Montreal and occupy one of the hotels there. I hope I could sleep well.

Thank you for this information, we can share this to other people who are looking for a place where they can have rest, safety and convenience.

  10. Hello

Thank you for showing up these wonderful offers that Montreal has. I think that for a trip it is good to choose Hotel Place D’Armes. It is relatively close to many tourist attractions. It also has an airport nearby, which is great. And the price is reasonable. The only problem would be to make friends with friends for this trip.

    best regards

    Carmen

  11. Montreal is a wonderful city and I have been there many times over the years. I never stayed in a penthouse, but that is the way to go for sure. I really never considered it until I started following your website and I am glad that I found you! The prices are reasonable for what you get, and the stay can be even more memorable.

Thanks for finding these for us and also for doing the research on things that you can do when staying at one of the locations. This is a nice touch and I know that for me it does help as I plan my travels and off-time when I travel. Which of these locations do you prefer?

After looking through each of the options, the one that I like best is the Hotel Le Crystal penthouse. The view and location are perfect for seeing the best of Montreal and the price is extremely reasonable. My guess is that I will have to book well ahead of time to get this.

  12. Thanks again for another helpful and informative article. Being a traveller I love to visit your site often and every single time I read an article of yours I get helpful insights!

I heard a lot about Montreal Fireworks Festival, which is the world’s largest annual fireworks festival. I love to watch it, so Montreal is on my list!

Hotel Le Crystal is the one I am interested with. The information you share on the description about the hotel and the nearby places to visit is very helpful. The pricing is unbelievable and very cheap via your article you are doing a great service. I am bookmarking your article for future reference as always.

    Much Success!

    Paul

  13. Thank you for this very informative piece.

As someone who resides in the UK, Montreal is not the first vacation destination which springs to mind, esp because of the cold winter months that Canada is renowned for. But it is quite interesting to read that summer months can be so warm, and your photo selections of the pent houses are so inviting. My favourite is your headline picture of the Hotel Le Crystal. That picture will stay with me for a loooooong time:)

    Cheers

    Femi

  14. Hallo there,

I have to say the hotels are just in their own unique levels.

A couple of my friends are arranging to travel down there during the December holidays. I was told and had to look through the best hotels to know the best accommodation for us.

I’m definitely going with the Hotel Épik Montréal. The architecture and the interior design just blows me away.

I’m really looking forward to this experience.

    1. Hi Dave, Hotel Epik is just that, epic! The penthouse is really luxurious, so the pricing is moderate, yet worth it. May your experience be an amazing one!

  15. As much as Hotel Épik Montréal stole my heart with its rustic ski lodge feel I was also intrigued by the balcony hot tub on Hotel Le Crystal’s image. I also love the red brick on the listing for Hotel Kutuma. Montreal is not really my cup of tea because of the language barrier as I love to find places to eat off the beaten path but if I’m ever there for business I have a great idea for where to stay.

    1. Thank you Andy! You picked some good ones there and perhaps you may find yourself on the beaten path here.

  16. These are beautiful places I would love to visit. My favorite would be the Hotel EplkMontreal. I love the woodwork inside the place. It’s similar to my home inside.

I won’t mind going to that place on my travels. My family would love it as well.

Thank you for posting this. I’ll save this for later.

    All the best.

  17. Hello

I find the Hotel St. Paul to be very nice. I’m surprised to see the prices per person. They are so affordable as compared to regular hotel rooms. Planning a trip to Montreal has been on my bucket list. Let’s hope I can do it sometime soon. I believe I’ll come back to this page when I do that. I’ll bookmark it till then.

    Thanks

  18. This was a very interesting article! I’ve never seen fancy hotels as unique as these–they’re all very impressive.

The first one that caught my eye was the Hotel Epic. The style in the picture is incredible. It would take some work to convince me that picture wasn’t color selected for brown because that’s basically the only color in the room. It’s almost my new dream house.

I also liked Le Mount Stephen for its very modern look. The bathrooms also sound like a lot of fun with the heated floors (I had no idea that was a thing) and the rainforest shower (something I’ve wanted to try for a long time). It just seems like a really cool place.

Anyways, this was a very interesting article. I definitely learned a thing or two about hotels and if I had the budget for one of these places, I’d love to give it a try.

It is a long way from where I live. When the lockdown of the world ends many people will be looking for this information.

  21. I have visited Montreal many years ago and found it to be a wonderful place to visit. Thanks for sharing some history along with the beautiful rental properties available in the city. I loved the walkable areas of the city, and staying somewhere close to these districts would be a great way to enjoy time there. Thanks for sharing the approximate nightly cost and how much that breaks down to per each person. I’ve got my sights on that beautiful space at the Ritz-Carlton Montreal.

  22. I am from Toronto, and have never been to Montreal. I have always hoped to go with my friends but we have never gotten around to it. Thank you for the inspiration, and the great ideas in terms of places to stay. I will certainly be sending this to some of my friends, and hopefully we can organize a trip together. Fantastic post, and thanks for the inspiration!
