Hotels in Sydney

Hotels in Sydney provide excellent accommodations a destination nicknamed “The Harbour City”. Known for its harbor, coves, bays, rivers, bridges, beaches, parks, gardens, reserves, ovals, museums, historic buildings / sites, shopping malls, restaurants, cafes, cocktail bars, superyachts, shipwrecks, coastal hiking trails, saltwater tidal pools and surfing, Sydney is located on Australia’s southeastern coast, about half-way between the coastal cities of Brisbane (northerly) and Melbourne (southerly). Flowing through northern Sydney, the Parramatta River mixes with salt water (becoming estuarine) near the Charles Street Weir at the Parramatta Central Business District (just westerly of Sydney), then continues its course past Sydney Opera House and into Sydney Harbour. Oceania’s most traveled city, Sydney is bordered to the north by Garigal National Park (cycling, hiking, horse-riding, sandstone rock formations, waterfalls, Aboriginal sites), Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park (Aboriginal sites, coastal bush, beaches) and Berowra Valley National Park (bush hiking paths, camping grounds, kayaking, fishing, swimming), westerly by Western Sydney Parklands (walking / cycling paths, picnic shelters, playgrounds)  and to the south by Botany Bay (historical founding place) and Royal National Park (oceanfront cliff walk, grassland / forest trails). Within the city, main attractions include Sydney Opera House, Darling Harbour, Taronga Zoo Sydney, Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, Sydney Fish Market (seafood market), Sydney Harbour Bridge, SEA LIFE Sydney Aquarium, Queen Victoria Building (shopping mall), Hyde Park, Luna Park Sydney (amusement park), Paddy’s Markets Haymarket (market), Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney Tower Eye (observation deck), Broadway Sydney (shopping mall), Westfield Bondi Junction (shopping mall), Australian Museum, Opera Bar (bar), Birkenhead Point (outlet mall), Museum of Contemporary Art Australia, Powerhouse Ultimo (museum), The Star, Sydney (casino), Mrs Macquarie’s Chair (historical landmark), Sydney Cricket Ground (stadium), Saint Mary’s Cathedral (Catholic cathedral) and BridgeClimb Sydney (tourist attraction). Sydney’s main airport is Sydney Airport, which is located on the city’s south side. Good to know is that Uber rideshare does operate in Sydney, with service encompassing the airport. Sydney’s rapid transit system is Sydney Metro, though arguably the city’s best mode of public transport is via ferry, known as Sydney Ferries. Sydney’s main professional sports teams are Sydney FC, Western Sydney Wanderers, Macarthur FC, Sydney Roosters, New South Wales Waratahs and The Sydney Sixers. When traveling in Sydney, keep in mind that the weather and traffic both can be unpredictable at times. Be sure to pack sunscreen and to stay hydrated. During nesting season, Magpies, or “Swoop Birds”, can be aggressive, and are known to swoop at pedestrians and cyclists who enter their territory. The best way to avoid sharks is by not swimming at dusk or dawn. Topless sunbathing is common on Sydney beaches. While residents generally are quite friendly, don’t be surprised if you hear swear words. Tipping in restaurants generally is not customary except for outstanding service, though of course is appreciated. In Sydney, cars travel on the left-hand-side, currency is the Australian Dollar and the drinking age is 18 years old. Prostitution is legal in Sydney, with Kings Cross historically being the city’s red-light district. Sydney top events include Sydney Festival, Vivid Sydney, Sydney Film Festival, Australian Fashion Week, Royal Easter Show, GABS Festival, Festival X Sydney, ULTRA Australia, Touch Bass Sydney Festival, Electric Gardens Festival, Return To Rio, Lost Paradise Festival, Sydney Folk Festival, Sydney Fringe Festival. Sydney Marathon, Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, The Everest Horse Race, Sydney SuperNight, Winterfest and SexpoHotels in Sydney are some of Australia’s best accommodations. Before we get to hotels in Sydney, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.

Possibly evidence of early weaponry, flaked pebbles discovered in Western Sydney suggest that humans may have settled in the Sydney-area for around 50,000 years. Naturally, seafood was an important food source for early coastal clans, while clans in the hinterland most likely hunted and gathered. An estimated 4,000-8,000 Aboriginal people lived in the Sydney area prior to British arrival . On April 29, 1770, Lieutenant James Cook landed at Botany Bay and encountered the Gweagal clan of the Dharawal people, marking the first meeting between Aboriginal clans and British explorers. Resulting from the Treaty of Paris and from Britain’s loss of its American penal colony, Britain sought to establish a new penal colony at Botany Bay. Notably, punishment at this new penal colony would  entail more manual labor than incarceration. In January 1788, Captain Arthur Phillip arrived at the Sydney area with 11 ships, known as the First Fleet, carrying over 1,000 settlers and 736 convicts. Port Jackson would become a more suitable place than Botany Bay to settle, particularly at Sydney Cove. On February 7, 1788, now-Governor Phillip formally proclaimed the colony of New South Wales. A fresh water supply and safe harbor, Sidney Cove was described by Philip as “the finest harbour in the world”. In April 1789, smallpox killed about half of the area’s indigenous population. Meanwhile, agriculture proved difficult for the British settlers at first due to poor soil quality around the initial settlement. British Second and Third Fleets arrived between 1790-1791. Former convicts received small grants of land, which were farmed successfully in the Parramatta, Windsor and Camden areas on the Cumberland Plain. Phillip Departed in December 1792, when the colony’s military officers acquired land and began importing goods from visiting ships. Former convicts opened small businesses and engaged in trade. “Sydney town” became a place where soldiers and former convicts, with or without official permission, built homes on Crown land. The new colony had become self-sufficient in food by 1804. New Governor William Bligh, restricting commerce and ordering demolition of the buildings erected on Crown land (some including active and non-active military officers), came head-on with the Rum Rebellion of 1808. The Rum Rebellion between the New South Wales Corps (rebels with a stake in the rum trade) and the Colony of New South Wales resulted, initially, in a rebel victory circa 1808, which deposed and arrested William Bligh, imposed martial law, and installed Luitentant-Colonel George Johnston as Governor, followed by a rebel defeat in 1810, when the New South Wales Corps was disbanded, and Major General Lachlan Macquarie was appointed as new Governor. Macquarie established a bank, a currency and a hospital, and employed a planner to design the city’s street layout. Public buildings, churches, wharves and roads were commissioned at this time. Between 1811-1815, roads were built between Sydney and Parramatta, across the Blue Mountains, and beyond the Great Dividing Range, allowing for large-scale farming and grazing. Free British settlers emigrated to New South Wales following Macquarie’s departure. Between 1826-1840, the area’s free settler population increased from 900 to 29,000. Sydney was declared a city in 1842, when the New South Wales Legislative Council became a semi-elected body. In 1851, gold was discovered in New South Wales and Victoria, which, in actuality, disrupted Sydney, as men moved to the goldfields. Subsequently, Melbourne overtook Sydney as Australia’s largest city, which led to tensions between the two cities. Ultimately, though, the gold rush proved beneficial for both cities, as demand for housing, consumer goods, services and urban amenities increased in both places. Between 1861-1891, Sydney’s population grew from 95,600 to 386,900. Terrace houses in narrow streets became characteristic of Sydney. Abundant Sydney sandstone was used to construct new buildings, including the University of Sydney, the Australian Museum, the Town Hall and the General Post Office, respectively, between 1854 and 1892. In the late-19th century, “coffee palaces” and hotels were erected, while daylight sunbathing was banned at beaches. Designated ocean “baths”, however, remained popular for some. Throughout the 1890s, economic depression struck Sydney. George Reid of the Free Trade Party served as the 12th premier of New South Wales from 1894-1899. Wharves were modernized and inner-city slums were demolished as a result of a 1900 bubonic plague. On January 1, 1901, Australia’s six colonies federalized, and Sydney became New South Wales’ capital. Sydney males volunteered in droves for the First World War armed forces, which reduced unemployment. Following World War I, “homes fit for heroes” in new suburbs such as Daceyville and Matraville, along with “Garden suburbs” and mixed industrial and residential developments, led to a population boom that reached 1 million in 1926. Around this time, Sydney’s rail network became electric and Sydney Harbour Bridge was built. The 1930s Great Depression, particularly in Sydney, stymied new building, and by 1933 the city’s unemployment rate had reached almost 30%. In May and June 1942, during the Second World War, Sydney was attacked by Japanese submarines, resulting in 21 fatalities. Sydney Harbour’s World War II defense system was relatively slight and consisted only of the Garden Island Tunnel System, Bradleys Head Fortification Complex and Middle Head Fortifications. Following World War II, immigration and a significant baby boom ensued in Sydney. Suburbs throughout the Cumberland Plain became populated. Between 1947 and 1971, children accounted for over 75% of Sydney’s population growth. Manufacturing, retail and other service industries bolstered the city’s work force. All three events being controversial, high-rises developed in the 1950s, trade unions imposed “green bans” (a form of strike) in the early-1970s, and Danish architect Jarn Oberg Utzoh designed the Sydney Opera House, which opened in 1973. Sydney transformed from a manufacturing center to a “world city” as a result of tariff protection reductions in 1974, and starting in the 1980s, the city’s overseas immigration grew rapidly.

With a population of around 5.5 million “Sydneysiders”, Sydney is the most populous city in Australia, as well as Oceania. New South Wales’ state capital, Sydney is tucked inside Sydney Harbour, an inlet of the Tasman Sea, which is part of the South Pacific Ocean. To the city’s west, the Blue Mountains extend north-to-south for 60 miles with a highest peak of 3,901 feet. Sydney is one of the world’s most livable cities, although also one of the most expensive. An Alpha city, Sydney’s advanced market economy is bolstered by tourism, manufacturing and finance. In 2013, The Harbour City welcomed around 2.8 million international visitors. One of Sydney’s best surf breaks is found at North Narrabeen, a suburb in northern Sydney. Home to a Köppen–Geiger climate, Sydney experiences warm-to-hot summers and mild-to-cool winters. Due to variations in wind patterns and oscillating sea surface temperatures, the city’s weather may change relatively rapidly. Summer high temperatures can reach over 100 degrees Fahrenheit while winters average in the high 60s. Additional points of interest include Bondi Beach, The Domain, Centennial Parklands, York Street, Pitt Street, George Street, Darlinghurst Road, Circular Quay, State Theatre, Parliament House, Government House, Sydney Town Hall, General Post Office, Anzac War Memorial, Archibald Fountain, Sydney CBD, Central Station, State Library of New South Wales, University of Sydney, Accor Stadium, Allianz Stadium, CommBank Stadium and Chinatown. Local foods are barramundi (fish), Yellowfin tuna, Sydney rock oyster, Australian prawns, chicken parmigiana, barbecued sausages and seafood, fish and chips, meat pies, potato cake, bacon and egg rolls, avocado on toast, lamington cake (sponge cake) and Tim Tams (chocolate biscuits). Drinks include red wine, beer, Bundaberg Rum (sugar cane rum that can be found on tap), Espresso martinis, bottled cocktails,  ginger beer and lemon, lime and bitters (mostly soft drink, with bitters). Beer is often served by the schooner, or “schooey”, which is a 425 milliliter type of beer glass. With some background information on the area, we’re on to hotels in Sydney that will help make for an exciting trip.

  1. The view from Bondl road is simply breathtaking, with a distant view of the beach plus even the surrounding scenery would make me want to sit on that deck all day and just view the beauty surrounding the place. And with a Golf Club and marina nearby, you simply can’t beat this location. It’s the perfect vacation housing out there in Sydney from what I’ve researched.

  2. Hello

Thanks for your researched work for this job. And for our information. In fact, the hotels are beautiful, so you do not know which one to choose. And it offers kind of services. I would choose Bondi Beach Penthouse for a trip. But you said they were Sydney hotels and this hotel was written in New York. What is it like?

    best regards

    Carmen

  3. Wow, the Meriton Suites in Carter Street certainly look impressive and I love that the have the indoor swimming pool, gym as well as WiFi. It also has easy access to the airport which is great. Having a Tennis World close by is also a major plus for me.

If I ever get to go to see Sydney these places would be a real treat to stay in, but I am sure they are very expensive  if a group of friends got together it would be a great idea to rent something like this as a group

  4. The 10/266 Bondi Beach Penthouse looks warm and homely, plus being near the beach is an experience on its own. To wake up with the sound of beach waves crashing, I would choose this over any fancy hotel. It would definitely feel like a real vacation away from the busy city life. How far is the liqueur store from the penthouse though?

  5. These sure are some great penthouses if only I had more money I could stay in some of these flash places.

The beauty of penthouses are they are always at the top of the hotel, resort etc and the views are generally amazing!

These particular penthouses are in Australia and I’m sure they range in the $500 dollar mark which is crazy for a one night stay.

I have stayed in a few penthouses over the years and they sure do make you feel like a celebrity or a millionaire for a few days.

Thanks for sharing these amazing places in Sydney, I will have to visit. Cheers.

  6. This is such a great post! We’re planning on hopefully moving to Aus to work eventually, so this list will come in handy for sure. You’ve written in such great detail and your photos are amazing – you’re making me want to go there right now waaahh

95 Liverpool Street definitely looks perfect for what we would want too – a perfect place to relax but also work on our laptops!

    1. Kelly thank you so much for the kind comments! Meriton Suites World Tower at 95 Liverpool Street has some fantastic penthouse and suite options and so glad you found them to your liking, happy travels and best luck with your move 🙂

  7. Thank you for listing the best penthouse rentals in Sydney. I will going there around the beginning of the next year, so I can prepare to book them in advance. I’m considering between Bay Street and Merlton Suites. Bay Street has nicer view (for me), but around Merlton there are many Asian restaurants, and I love to eat there. I will tell my colleagues before choosing. Thanks.

  8. Awesome post. All pictures look so great. Sydney has always been the top tourist spot of any traveler. Pitts road is among my best among this list of best spots.

I’ve already been following your website over a period of month by now. And, I’ve noted some wonderful spots in my journal, now I’m glad to add Sydney along with those.

Thanks a lot for sharing this amazing post. Surely, I look forward to more of such. 👍

  9. All the penthouse you recommend looks classy and elegant with its modern interiors. Renting one for a vacation will be cost efficient if shared with friends or family members. The experience is like home away from home since tourists can also cook or even make delicious cocktails for themselves. It sure looks like a unique experience than booking for anhotel with so much restrictions. Thanks for showing all these beautiful penthouse. I like Meriton suites both in Kent and Pitt street. Have a nice day to you!

  10. Beautiful penthouses! All of them have a very incredible view.

I think this is the best way to admire Sydney’s architecture.

But Sydney is also one of the most expensive cities in the world, I wonder how much it will cost for a night?  Do they offer any special packages for  the weekend?

    Thanks

    1. Thank you very much Adyns! This is a great way to admire Sydney’s architecture for sure. Please stay tuned for pricing.

  11. Great post! I love reading about places to stay in other countries. Meriton Suites World Tower, look at that view! Wow! If I had my choice I would stay at the Meriton Suites Pitt Street or Bondi Beach Penthouse. I like the classy look of Meriton and I like how Bondi is close to the beach. Keep them coming!

    Brian

    1. Thank you Brian! Glad you found two to your liking in Meriton Suites Pitt Street or Bondi Beach Penthouse.

  12. Hi Admin,

I found your post so interesting. I wanted to go Sydney Australia with my husband in our summer vacation. But we were facing very much problems for took decision that where wii we can stay. But now your post help me a lot and able to remove my confusion. You attached very clear information about the penthouses of Sydney Australia. I like most Bondi Beach Penthouse. Because it situated at the side of the beach. Can I advance book it?

Thanks a lot dear. I will share your informative and helpful post to others.

    1. Snigdha thank you for the comments 🙂 You can book in advance if you’d like. This will keep the cost as low as possible. Nice to see you again!

  14. Hi,

    Thanks for sharing these findings!

Number one Carter Street sounds like it may be ideal for what I’m looking for. There are three of us travelling over to Sydney next year for a mates wedding/ lads reunion. I’m massively in to the gym and swimming and will need to be able to do some work while there so accessible WIFI is highly important. It sounds like it is smack in the middle of everything as well, which is ideal as none of us have visited Sydney before. I like the fact it has room service/ concierge, it will come in handy as it’s all of our first times, I’ll be sending this over to the others for them to check this out.

    1. Hi Nate and thank you for stopping by! These hotels will have top-notch WiFi accommodations, so you shouldn’t have to worry about that.

  15. Wow!  These places are seriously beautiful!

I think I’d like a room in the one you show on your first post — the Meriton Suites Carter Street one.  The view looks stupendous.

I looked for prices, and found only the ones on your other article on penthouses by city.  Are these comparable in price?  It is reasonable if a small group of adults travel together and split the rent, and what a gorgeous place to stay!

I have friends who like to book such places.  We did a trip together to the Southwestern United States, and stayed in penthouses.  Perhaps they would like to go to Australia.  Now, that would be really fun!

(You can delete this remark; just wanted to tell you.  In your titles, you use an “l” instead of an “i” in Meriton and Suites.  Thought you might want to change those.)

Thanks for your careful research and a wonderful look at Australian penthouses.  I am impressed!

  16. Thanks for sharing the best hotels in “Sidney Australia”, and nice views which get me excited to visit someday. I’ve always wanted to visit Australia and this gives me an update that Sidney has the best hotels. I love the awesome amenities.

How many miles is Sidney Australia from the United States? How long would it take to get there by air?

    1. Hi Letha. Flight from USA to Australia will take you about 19 hours, so a longer stay with a larger group of people might be advisable if you have the time. Great questions and thanks for stopping by!

  17. Previously I commented on your Melbourne post.   As I shared in that post – my wife and I are in our seventies plus period of our lives.   While COVID-19 has put a halt on overseas travel, we feel that this will eventually pass.   Now is the time to plan for future trips.   Really like what you wrote about Melbourne and Sydney sounds also great.   Not sure about the beaches, the historic Sydney Opera House would be a must for a trip that we are planning, in addition to the Art Galleries and Sea Life Aquarium.    What really jumps out is how the Hotel room pricing really varies, from very expensive to very reasonable.   We would at least plan to stay and tour for a couple of days.    What is the availability of public transportation to get around?

  18. I didn’t know how many tourists visit Sydney each year. But researching a bit about it has really surprised me. Do you know how many tourists visited Sydney in 2019 (before COVID-19)? A total of 16.1 million tourists visited Sydney from July 2018 to June 2019. This total encompassed 4.1 million international visitors and 12 million domestic overnight tourists.

  19. Wow! went through this article several times , hoping that I will be able to choose one but its a hard choice to make. All I know that the beautiful breathtaking pictures made it very clear that I am due for a holiday. I might not be able to come Austrilia now but whenever I find myself there , I will be having a clue of what to look out for. Thank you
