Hotels in Brisbane offer wonderful accommodations in a destination nicknamed “Brissy”. Known for its waterways, bridges, cafes, gardens, art galleries, pleasant weather, distinctive architecture and koalas, Brisbane is Australia‘s third-most populous city behind only Sydney and Melbourne. Queensland‘s capital, Brisbane marks the mid-point of Australia’s semi-circular, eastern coastline. Just south of Brisbane, the metropolitan region of Gold Coast is home to long sandy beaches, while sand dunes, shallow lakes and mangrove forests compliment Sunshine Coast to the north. Due-west of Brissy are scenic areas such as Mount Coot-Tha Summit Lookout, Walkabout Creek Discovery Centre, Moggill Conservation Park, Manorina D’Aguilar National Park, Cedar Creek Swimming Holes, Northbrook Gorges, Cormorant Bay Recreational Reserve and Lake Wivenhoe Campground. About half-way between Brisbane and Gold Coast, the rainforest Tamborine National Park is home to gorges, waterfalls, picnic areas, hiking trails and scenic overlooks, as well as Curtis Falls Track and Tamborine Mountain Glow Worm Caves. Around the city’s outskirts you may find various attractions such as St Helena Island National Park, Fort Lytton National Park, DFO Brisbane, Eagle Farm Racecourse, Lone Pine Koala Sanctuary, Mt Ommaney Centre, Underwood Park Priestdale, Pats Park, Victoria Point Beach Front Walk, North Stradbroke Island Golf Club, Old Cleveland Lighthouse, Wellington Point Recreation Reserve, Beth Boyd Park and Whites Hill Reserve. Coffee enthusiasts should have no problem locating a quality café practically anywhere throughout the city. Suncorp Stadium, home to the Brisbane Roar as well as a major concert venue, is located on the city’s northwest side. Offering several ferry terminal stops, the Translink ferry network can make for exciting adventures to various neighborhoods alongside the Brisbane River. When planning your Brisbane trip, keep in mind that summers are humid, comfortable attire is recommended, tipping is not expected (10% would be more than fair) and smoking in public places generally is discouraged. “Brisbanites”, though friendly and open-minded, generally are proud of their city, so complementing it might get you far. Brisbane’s currency is the Australian Dollar, the drinking age is 18 years old and cars travel on the left-hand side. Like anywhere, of course you will need a visa or passport when visiting from abroad. Extensive, Brisbane-area big events include Brisbane Festival, Brisbane Comedy Festival, Ginuary Festival, CMC Rocks QLD, The Woodford Folk Festival, Bluesfest, Ultra Beach Gold Coast, Promiseland, For The Love, Listen Out, Spilt Milk, Good Things, St Jerome’s Laneway, Knotfest, Queensland Music Trails, BIGSOUND Festival, Touch Bass, Jammin Festival, Souled Out, Juicy Fest, Brisbane International Boat Show, Paniyiri Greek Festival and Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art. Hotels in Brisbane are some of Oceania’s best. Before we get to hotels in Brisbane, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.
Archaeological findings suggest that aboriginal Australians had inhabited the Brisbane area for over 22,000 years. In the 1820s, prior to European settlement, the aboriginal population (Turrbal, Yugara and Quandamooka) is estimated at 6,000 to 10,000. The Brisbane River, an important ecosystem from the onset, provided fish, shellfish, crab and prawns. Resourceful fishermen, the aboriginals set up seasonal riverside camps, the largest of which (200-600 persons) were located at present-day Victoria Park and Woolloongabba. British navigator James Cook, circa 1770, sailing through the area’s South Passage between the main offshore islands, erroneously named the bay “Moreton” after James Douglas, 14th Earl of Morton. At present-day Woody Point, Matthew Flinders landed on July 17, 1799, naming the area “Red Cliff Point” after its red-colored cliffs. In 1820, European settlers encountered the Turrbal people, who referred to the present-day Brisbane Central Business District as Mian-jin, or “place shaped as a spike”. Sir Thomas Brisbane, Governor of New South Wales, in 1823 remitted orders to develop a new penal settlement in the area. Further surveying in November 1823, led by John Oxley, placed Red Cliff Point as the new penal colony location. Initially a Moreton Bay penal settlement farm, the subsequent City Botanic Gardens were first planted by convicts in 1825. Jacaranda and poinciana flowering plants became the first of their species to be planted in Australia. A non-convict European settlement developed thereafter. German missionaries settled at Zions Hill sometime around 1837. Under Captain Patrick Logan, the penal settlement expanded. Nearly 2,400 men and 145 women had been detained at the Moreton Bay convict settlement by 1842. In 1849, Scottish immigrants from the barque (ship) Fortitude settled in, and inspired the namesake of, present-day Fortitude Valley. The Pugin Chapel was erected in 1850 by way of the Roman Catholic Church. Indigenous attacks occurred throughout the city during the War of Southern Queensland, which resulted in a British victory. Much of Queen Street was destroyed via the Great 1864 Fire of Brisbane. Australia’s only moated fort ever built, Fort Lytton was constructed at the Brisbane River’s mouth in 1882. Frog’s Hollow, the city’s swampy slum area, was a Chinatown red light district and place of prostitution, sly grogs and opium dens. Flooding occurred in 1893 by way of the Black February Flood, resulting in approximately $4 million (1893-valued) damages, around 35 deaths, and destruction of the Victoria and Albert Bridges. In 1901, Australia’s six British self-governing colonies united into a Federation, and celebrations were held in Brisbane to commemorate the event. A trade unionist strike in 1912, along with an influx of Russian Jews escaping state-inspired pogroms, led up to tensions between First Australian Imperial Force servicemen and socialists following World War I. The Red Flag riots on March 24, 1919 resulted in numerous police officer and rioter injuries, as well as 1 police horse being killed. During World War II, the AMP Building (MacArthur Central presently) was South West Pacific Area headquarters, while the T & G Building was headquarters for American troops. On November 26, 1942, the “Battle of Brisbane” riot occurred between United States Army personnel and Australian Army servicemen and civilians. The 1982 Commonwealth Games and World Expo 88 contributed to Brisbane’s modern development.
Queensland’s capital and most populous city, Brisbane is home to around 2.5 million people. Brissy’s Central Business District stands on a peninsula about 9 miles up-river from Moreton Bay between the Coral and Tasman Seas. Submerged to the southeast, the massive submerged continent Zealandia stretches to about the size of Australia, while the Coral Sea Plateau to the north is a contiguous area with depths no greater than 3,300 feet. Located on the Brisbane River Valley’s hilly floodplain, with the Taylor and D’Aguilar mountain ranges to its west, Brisbane is served by rail, bus and ferry networks. The city’s two main transit hubs are Brisbane Airport and Port of Brisbane. Brisbane is named after the Brisbane River, which is named after Sir Thomas Brisbane. Historically, the city’s nickname was “Queen City of the North”. Over 32% of the metropolitan population is foreign born. Home to hot summers and moderate winters, Brisbane is characterized by a humid subtropical climate. January summer high temperatures average around 87 degrees Fahrenheit, while June winter highs average around 71 degrees. Surrounded by rain forests, naturally the area is home also to a variety of wildlife, such as koalas, tree frogs, rainbow lorikeets, kookaburras, Australian water dragons, bearded dragons, flying foxes, blue triangle butterflies, golden orb-weaver spiders and St Andrew’s Cross spiders. Brisbane River species include yellowfin bream, flathead, Australasian snapper and bull sharks. Farther out on Moreton Bay, the likes of humpback whales, dolphins, dugongs, mud crabs, soldier crabs and Moreton Bay bugs navigate the salt waters. Major points of interest include Kangaroo Point, South Bank Parklands, Queensland Cultural Centre, The Old Windmill, Wickham Park, Queen Street, Howard Smith Wharves, New Farm Park, Mount Coot-tha Lookout, Walter Taylor Bridge, University of Queensland, Eagle Street Pier, Queen Street Mall, Treasury Building, Brisbane Chinatown, St John’s Cathedral, Queensland Gallery of Modern Art, Queensland Performing Arts Centre, State Library of Queensland, The Gabba and Shorncliffe Pier. Popular foods are gnocchi, chicken wings, Ramen, cheeseburgers, breakfast carbonara, seafoods, barbecue and fruits. Drinks include cocktails, wine, whiskey and craft beer. Equipped with some background information, we are now ready for hotels in Brisbane that will help provide for a memorable experience.
