Hotels in Dublin

Hotels in Dublin Ireland

Hotels in Dublin offer wonderful accommodations in a destination nicknamed “The Fair City”. Known for its friendly inhabitants, legendary writers, pubs, restaurants, cafes, cathedrals, museums, parks and live music, Dublin is located on Ireland’s northeastern coast at the River Liffey‘s mouth. Across the Irish Sea from Dublin is Liverpool. Northward, between Dublin and Liverpool in the midst of the Irish Sea, sits the self-governing British Crown dependency, Isle of Man. Belfast, Northern Ireland’s capital, is about a 2-hour drive northward of Dublin. Originally built by Vikings, The Fair City is home to a number of long-standing establishments and pubs. Remembrances of literary legends such as James Joyce, William Butler Yeats and Oscar Wilde remain ever-present in establishments, museums, pubs, book stores and more throughout the city. Notable attractions include Dublin Castle, St Patrick’s Cathedral, National Gallery of Ireland, National Museum of Ireland – Archaeology, Guinness Storehouse, The Brazen Head, The Temple Bar Pub, Ha’penny Bridge, 3Arena, EPIC The Irish Emigration Museum, National Museum of Ireland-Decorative Arts & History, Croke Park, Trinity College Dublin, Dublin Zoo and National Botanic Gardens. The city’s top football clubs are Shamrock Rovers, St. Patrick’s Athletic and Bohemian FC. Although Gaelic is Ireland’s national and first official language, English is used predominately in government business and legislative debate. Of course, English will get you by just fine, but it might be useful to know some slang words such as “jacks” (toilet),  “go ‘way outta that” (stop that), “ask me bollocks” (f-off), “bleedin’ banjaxed” (wrecked), “state da ya” (you are an idiot), “ger-yup-ow-ra-da” (also an f-off), “black stuff” (Guinness), “deadly” (brilliant/great), “earwigging” (eavesdropping), “fair play” (well done), “fine thing” (good looking), “fluthered” (very drunk), “gas” (funny), “gawk” (stare rudely), “howya” (hi), “how’s she cuttin'” (how are you) and “craic” (pleasant conversation). When traveling to Dublin, keep in mind that it is rainiest from October through December. Tipping between 10% and 15% is customary in restaurants. Currency is the Euro, cars travel on the left-hand side and the drinking age is 18 years old. Top events include Dublin International Film Festival, St. Patrick’s Festival, Temple Bar TradFest, Dublin Irish Festival, Dublin International Literature FestivalDublin Literary Pub Crawl, Longitude Festival, Forbidden Fruit Festival, Beyond The Pale Festival, Dublin Fringe Festival, Waterford Harvest Festival, Bram Stoker Festival and The Dublin Senior Football Championship. Hotels in Dublin are some of the United Kingdom’s best. Before we get to hotels in Dublin, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.

During excavation for the Convention Centre Dublin, 6,000-year-old fish traps were unearthed, suggesting that the Dublin Bay area had been inhabited by humans for quite some time. Mesolithic, or Middle Stone Age, human activity is also indicated by the discovery of additional fish traps near St. James’s Gate. The earliest written reference to a Dublin-area settlement appeared circa 140 AD via the Greco-Roman astronomer and cartographer Ptolemy, who called the place Eblana polis. 988 AD is the official year that the Irish government recognizes the city’s first settlement. Prior to 988, it’s thought that a Viking settlement named Duibhlinn was established in the year 841 AD, while an archaeological dig site in Temple Bar suggests that an even earlier Anglo-Saxon settlement may have existed prior to the Vikings. Fully infilled during the early 18th century, the Dubhlinn was a pool on the River Poddle‘s lowest stretch where Viking ships once moored. A fortified base was established by Vikings circa 841. Under the Irish-Viking leader Olaf Guthfrithson, a significant commercial center developed during the 10th century. Ruaidrí Ua Conchobair was Ireland’s last High King before the Norman Invasion of Ireland during the late 12th century, which resulted in the kings of England claiming sovereignty to Ireland. Slave-trading, which would continue through the colonization of early America, contributed to the city’s early economic growth. Strongbow, the Earl of Pembroke, conquered Dublin and declared himself King of Leinster, to which Henry II of England trumped with an even larger invasion circa 1171. Henry II pronounced himself Lord of Ireland, and the county of the City of Dublin was established. Founded in 1204, Dublin Castle became the center of Anglo-Norman power in Ireland by way of King John of England. The first Lord Mayor of Dublin was appointed in 1229, at which time the city expanded to include a population of around 8,000. Thousands were killed in the city due to the 1348 Black Death. Under English Crown control, a narrow strip of English settlement was known as the Pale during the late 15th century. A Tudor conquest of Ireland in the 16th century resulted in Dublin’s strengthening as Ireland’s center of administrative rule. Queen Elizabeth I’s establishment of Trinity College in 1592 was an attempt to make the city predominately Protestant. John Speed, in 1610, drew the city’s first map. Almost half of the city’s population perished due to a 1649-51 plague. Following the plague, wool and linen trade with England helped to revive the population. Georgian Dublin thrived during the 18th century. For a brief time, Dublin became the British Empire’s second-largest city, as well as Europe’s fifth-largest. Becoming the world’s largest brewery, as well as Dublin’s largest employer, the Guinness brewery was founded in 1759. The Acts of Union 1800 resulted in a period of political and economic decline during the 19th century. Much throughout Dublin was destroyed by way of the Easter Rising of 1916, the Irish War of Independence and the subsequent Irish Civil War. In December 1921, the Irish Free State was established, remembrances of which can be observed in the Garden of Remembrance. During a 30-year-long conflict known as the Troubles between UK Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland, on May 17, 1974 the Dublin and Monaghan bombings killed 33 people and an unborn child, while injuring 258. A 1970-80 recession caused a population decline at city-center. Fueled by foreign investment, the recent Celtic Tiger period created rapid economic growth.

Ireland’s capital and largest city, Dublin is home to around 1.1 million “Dubliners”, who are generally some of the world’s friendliest people. The Gaelic word “dubh linn” means “black pool”, a reference to the Poddle Stream’s breaching of the River Liffey, which once formed a deep pool near Dublin Castle. Fair City famous writers include James Joyce (b. 1882), William Butler Yeats (b. 1865) and Oscar Wilde (b. 1854 Dublin). Dublin is Ireland’s seat of the national government, or Oireachtas. Approximately 45 square miles in land area, the city is bordered to the south by the Dublin Mountains, a low mountain range and sub range of the Wicklow Mountains, and flat farmland to the north and west. Uber rideshare transportation is available across the city. Characterized by a maritime climate, warm summers average around 60 degrees Fahrenheit, while mild winters average a little over 40 degrees. Apart from Saint Patrick’s Day, probably the best time to visit Dublin is between June and September. Dublin foods include Irish stew, Coddle (typically involving sausage, potatoes and various other ingredients), Boxty Pancakes, Colcannon (a type of mashed potato mixed with cabbage or kale), black and white pudding, soda bread and Barmbrack (a type of raisin bread associated with Halloween). Aside from Guinness, alcoholic drinks vary, and naturally are based on whiskey, Irish cream or cider. Now that we have some background information on the area, it’s time for hotels in Dublin that will help make for an incredible experience.
