Best Hotels in Mexico

Hotels in Acapulco offer cost-effective accommodations in a destination with historical nicknames to include “America’s Paradise”, “Pearl of the Pacific” and “Riviera of Mexico”. A “beach resort town”, Acapulco today is known mostly for its playas (beaches) and cliff divers. Acapulco is located on Mexico’s southwestern coast. Acapulco Bay, composed of thick sands, is surrounded by the Sierra Madre del Sur Mountains. Much of south Acapulco is separated from mountains by Laguna de Tres Palos. Within the resort town, main attractions include Playa Puerto Marqués, La Isla Shopping Village (shopping mall), La Quebrada (tourist attraction – cliff diving), Diana the Huntress (monument), Playa Majahua, Caleta Beach, Playa la Roqueta (island public beach), Paititi del Mar (seafood restaurant), Parque De La Reina (garden), Revolcadero (beach), Mirador Sinfonía del Mar (scenic spot), Acapulco Historical Museum of Fort San Diego (history museum), La Finca Acapulco (restaurant), Esmirna del Mar (seafood restaurant), Playa La Bonfil, Mirador Puerto Marqués (scenic spot), Capilla de la Paz (Chapel of Peace – Catholic church), Arena GNP Seguros, Tres Vidas Golf Club Acapulco and Acapulco Botanical Garden. Acapulco, in truth, is a shell of its once thriving existence. A bona fide tourist destination for the likes of John Wayne, Frank Sinatra and Rita Hayworth, the resort town has since experienced an uptick in criminal activity and poverty. At present, most tourism is generated from within the country. Where there is adversity, though, there can be opportunity. If you are traveling to Acapulco there are, of course, some things to consider. You should not drink tap water. Taxi is probably the best way to get around the resort town, as Uber rideshare does not operate in Acapulco. Of course, it’s best not to venture far from tourist areas. Even in tourist areas, women should travel in groups, especially after dark. Violent crime, drug trade and sexual assault are known to occur, and police are known to be corrupt. If you experience a problem, it’s best to go directly to a US embassy or consulate. You should always check travel advisories and know that Acapulco is located in “Guerrero state”. Acapulco’s main airport is Acapulco International Airport (ACA). Currency is the Mexican Peso, cars travel on the right-hand side and the drinking age is 18 years old. Let’s take a look at some more background information on the area, in the event that Acapulco may yet return to greatness.

The Aztec ruler Ahuizotl, quite probably pre-Columbian Mesoamerica’s greatest military leader, took control of the Acapulco area around the late-1400s. Part of the Aztec Empire, the area was defended by the Yopes until the 1520s, when the Spanish arrived. By the 1530s, Acapulco developed into a major port at the behest of Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés. At that time, a road between the Acapulco-area and Mexico City had also been constructed. Acapulco’s initial rise is attributed to Spanish trade. Cocoa, cotton and corn became the biggest local commodities. In 1615, Dutch invaders were cause for the construction of the Fort of San Diego. Said fort was destroyed by an earthquake in 1776, and rebuilt by 1783. Mexican-Roman Catholic priest and revolutionary José María Morelos y Pavón attacked and burned down the city circa 1810. During the 1910 Mexican Revolution, revolutionary forces took over Acapulco’s main plaza. Texas businessman Albert B. Pullen’s construction of Old Acapulco’s hotel and trading infrastructure in the 1920s marked the beginning of a relatively brief high-point in Acapulco’s rather dark history.

A port of call for shipping and cruise lines between Panama and San Francisco, Acapulco is home to around 660,000 acapulqueños (males) and acapulqueñas (females). One of Mexico’s oldest beach resort towns, Acapulco was once a thriving destination for celebrities and international tourists. Historically, Acapulco has been a prized sport-fishing destination, especially for blue and black marlin. For those brave enough to set out on the nightlife scene, Baby’O  and Palladium represent two of the resort town’s best nightclubs today. Consistent temperatures range in the low 70s to high 80s degrees Fahrenheit throughout the year. Wet season occurs from June through September, when average monthly rain falls at over 10 inches. Additional points of interest are Acapulco Bay, La Roqueta Island, Acapulco Diamante, Bay of Puerto Marqués, Catedral de Acapulco and Papagayo Park (Parque Papagayo). Popular foods include pozole (hominy soup or stew with meat, cabbage, chili peppers, onion, garlic, salsa), ceviche (fish / shellfish marinated in lime, mixed with tomatoes, cilantro, onions, green chilis), enchiladas and chalupas. “The Acapulco” is a cocktail made with tequila, rum, lime/pineapple/grapefruit juice and raw egg white. With some background information on the area, we’re ready for hotels in Acapulco.
