Hotels in Montreal

Hotels in Montreal, especially the ones found below, offer incredible glimpses upon a city that has held various nicknames throughout its existence, from Mark Twain’s “The City of a Hundred Steeples”, to the Prohibition era’s “Sin City”, to the common acronym “MTL”. Known as one of North America’s biggest international event hosts as well as the home of Cirque de Soleil, Montreal is a great place to eat and drink, visit cultural spots and enjoy bustling nightlife. English speakers should have no problem conversing within Montreal establishments. Keep in mind that hotels in Montreal are required to charge relatively significant tax rates (which have been accounted for and reflected in the pricing below). Before we get you to these hotels in Montreal let’s take a look at some background information on the city to help you along the way.

Montreal was founded on May 17th, 1642, when Jérôme le Royer de la Dauversière, a French nobleman, hired a group of colonists to evangelize the area’s native peoples by way of a Roman Catholic mission. A chapel and a hospital were the first buildings to be built. Expansion proved difficult, as the settlement succumbed to frequent and violent attacks from the Iriquois nation, which is said to have been founded in the area circa 1450 due to corn’s cultivation into a staple crop. Iriquois attacks caused the colonists to retreat back to France for a time, where they raised 100 volunteers with the intent of recapturing the city. If the attempt failed, then Montreal would have been abandoned, and the survivors would have been relocated down river to Quebec City. The plan having succeeded, the area called Ville Marie grew to about 600 colonists by the year 1685. Fur trade in the area was a source of both wealth and brief doom for New France, as evidenced by the 1689 English-sanctioned Iriquois attack on Lachine. Thereafter, the Society of the Priests of Saint-Sulpice was granted the land of Montreal, where they influenced the natives to move away from the fur trading post at Ville Marie. In 1760, Montreal fell to the British as a result of the Seven Years’ War, only to be relinquished after the American Revolutionary War.

Named after the tiny mountain Mount Royal, Montreal today has a population of over 1.8 million people. The city’s official language is French, while English is the second-most spoken language. MTL occupies much of the Island of Montreal near the Saint Lawrence and Ottawa Rivers’ confluences. Montreal is bordered by the cities Laval to the north, Longueuil, Saint-Lambert, Brossard, and other municipalities to the south, the West Island municipalities to the west and Repentigny to the east. Summers are pleasant, averaging around 80 degrees Fahrenheit, while winters naturally are much colder. Even so, the city tallies big tourist numbers throughout the year, most notably for New Year’s celebrations and hockey season in the colder months. The Montreal Canadians, one of the original six in the National Hockey League, play their hockey games at Bell Centre, a beloved multi-purpose arena with a seating capacity of over 21,000 people. Major points of interest include Notre Dame Basilica Montreal, Olympic Stadium, McGill University, Old Montreal, Saint Joseph’s Oratory, Port of Montreal and Tour de la Bourse, to name a few. Popular Montreal foods are maple donuts, bagels, smoked meats, fois gras poutine, and Pâté Chinois, which is similar to Shepard’s pie. Canadian whiskey has been around since John Molson began exporting it from Montreal circa 1800, while popular drinks include the Canadian Caesar, a type of bloody mary, lager beer and of course hot coffee or chocolate in the winter. Now that we have some background information on the city, let’s get to hotels in Montreal that are what we regard as must-sees.
