Hotels in New Orleans LA

Hotels in New Orleans LA welcome you to a city nicknamed “The Big Easy”, so-named for its laid back, easy-going way of life. Pronounced “New OR-lins” or “New AHL-lee-ins” by locals, The Big Easy is known for its unique dialect, Creole cuisine, jazz music and world-renowned celebrations such as Mardi Gras. Hotels in New Orleans LA, especially the ones found below, help provide for an unforgettable experience in a city with seemingly endless sights and entertainment. Food, culture, sports, whatever your pleasure, you are almost certain to have an outstanding time in this charming southern US city. Before we get you to hotels in New Orleans LA, let’s take a look at some background information on the area to help you along the way.

Founded in 1718 by the French Mississippi Company, New Orleans was named after Philippe II, Duke of Orléans, Regent of the Kingdom of France.  Like with many frontier cities, the French colonists faced adversity by way of Native American attacks such as the Natchez Revolt, which in 1729 accounted for 230 colonists being killed. Following the Seven Years’ War France ceded the area to the Spanish Empire, and it was from the Spanish period that 18th-century, French Quarter architecture survives to this day. The city became an important port for smuggling aid to the rebels during the American Revolutionary War against Great Britain. Military equipment and supplies were transported up the Mississippi River. The term “Dixie” as applied to currency originated in the city. After the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, New Orleans became a United States city and expanded rapidly. Around 1810, over half a million slaves had been brought to the area, which fueled the Confederate economy. Collectively, slaves were valued at around half a billion dollars. Population doubled in the 1930s, with Anglo-Americans, German and Irish immigrants settling in. Just prior to the American Civil War, New Orleans had per capita income that ranked second in the nation, as well as the third busiest port behind Boston and New York. The capture of New Orleans in 1862, which resulted in zero casualties, proved to be a turning point in the Civil War, as it gave the Union the strategic positioning and momentum needed to take control of the Mississippi River.

New Orleans today, with a population of around 350,000 people, benefits from short, mild winters, while summers are hot and humid. A major worldly port with southern local charm, New Orleans harbors tanker ships and steamboats alike. The city is well-known for its Mardi Gras Festival, which takes place in late-February. It is home to the New Orleans Saints, an NFL team that plays at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome, which has hosted seven Super Bowls. Other major points of interest include French Quarter, Bourbon Street, Central Business District, St. Charles Avenue, New Orleans Museum of Art, Café du Monde, Tulane University and University of New Orleans, to name a few. Cuisine is a major draw as well, with popular food items including gumbo, jambalaya, crawfish etouffee, po-boys, which is a traditional Louisiana sandwich consisting of roast beef or fried seafood, muffuletta, or a type of round Sicilian sesame bread sandwich, beignets, a deep-fried choux pastry and bananas foster, a dessert made from bananas and vanilla ice cream. Popular New Orleans drinks include Brandy Milk Punch, Vieux Carre, Sazerac and French 75. Now that we have a little background information on the city, it’s time for hotels in New Orleans LA whose beauty you have to see to believe.
