Hotels In Puerto Vallarta

Hotels in Puerto Vallarta offer colorful accommodations in a beach resort town nicknamed ‘PV’, A vibrant place, Puerto Vallarta is known for its playas (white sand beaches), contemporary ocean pier, cruise terminal, marina. turquoise waters, marine life, beach pavilions, sculptures, watersports, surfing, sport fishing, cobblestone streets, parks, scenic sunset spots, seafood restaurants, bars (including gay bars), nightclubs, boutique shops, shopping malls, markets and wedding venues. Located on the Mexican state of Jalisco’s Pacific coastline, Puerto Vallarta is nestled inside Bahia de Banderas, or Bay of Banderas. Three rivers flow into Puerta Vallarta from the Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range, the Cuale, the Pitillal, and the Ameca. Just southward of the resort town are several outstanding beaches. Surrounding/bordering Puerto Vallarta, points of interest include Playa Yelapa (bay beach – swimming, snorkeling, watersports, beachfront eateries), Yelapa Waterfall, Las Caletas, Cabo Corrientes (secluded beach cove – watersports, dining, entertainment – accessible by boat tour only), Playa Las Animas (sandy strip – calm waves, swimming, paragliding, fish restaurants), Playa Colomitos (sheltered sandy bay – jungle backdrop, kiosk for coconut water / beer), Los Veranos Canopy Tour, Vallarta Botanical Gardens AC (host-site of Day of the Dead & Las Posadas celebrations), Playa Paredon, Playa La Garza Blanca, Palo Maria Waterfall, Playa Palmares, Playa Punta Negra, Canopy River Park (tour operator), Jorullo Bridge (tourist attraction – suspension bridge over Cuale River, forested canyon, ATV-tour area), La Huerta BBQ (barbecue restaurant – riverside), Vista Vallarta Club de Golf (golf course), Butterfly Sanctuary Mariposario Jardin Magico (wildlife park), Centro Internacional de Convenciones de Puerto Vallarta (convention center), El Tigre Club de Golf (golf course) and Flamingos Golf (golf course). Within the resort town, main attractions are Puerto Vallarta Malecon (beach pavilion – ocean views, sculptures, restaurants, bars, galleries, shops), Galerias Vallarta (shopping mall), Plaza Caracol (shopping mall), La Isla (shopping mall), Los Muertos Beach Pier (contemporary ocean pier – coastline views), Mercado Municipal Rio Cuale (bustling market – regional folk art jewelry, pozole soup, beef tacos), La Bodeguita del Medio Vallarta (Cuban restaurant), Mirador el Cerro de la Cruz (Hill of the Cross observation deck – steep steps to panoramic views, contemporary open-deck tower), Los Arcos (monument – stone arches, bayside promenade, amphitheater, sunset vantage point), Puerto Magico (cruise terminal), Parroquia de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe (Catholic church), Vallarta Adventures | Terminal Marítima (tour operator), Playa Conchas Chinas (sandy coastline – tidal pools, jagged rocks, strong waves), Mandala Puerto Vallarta (night club – water views), Playa Los Muerto (lively beach – food & drink vendors, water sports, boat trips) and Marina Vallarta Golf Club, Contrasting its southerly, fellow beach resort town of Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta is more pride-friendly than crime-friendly at present. Puerto Vallarta’s main airport is Puerto Vallarta International Airport (PVR), which is located on the town’s north side. Unlike Acapulco, Uber rideshare does operate in Puerto Vallarta, with service encompassing the airport. When visiting Puerto Vallarta, it’s a good idea to pack mosquito repellant, especially if you plan on hiking/exploring the surrounding jungle areas. Ladies might want to pack hair ties, as it can be quite humid in the area. While tap water is fine for washing and brushing teeth, you should always drink bottled water. Of course, it’s best to exchange your currency for Mexican pesos, as many local restaurants and markets are cash-only. In Puerto Vallarta, currency is the Mexican peso, the drinking age is 18 years old and cars travel on the right-hand side. Hotels in Puerto Vallarta are some of Mexico’s best accommodations. Before we get to hotels in Puerto Vallarta, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.

Although archaeological evidence suggests that humans may have inhabited the Puerto Vallarta-area since around 580 BC, relatively little is known about the area prior to the 19th century. From 900-1200 AD, the Aztec Aztlán culture is thought to have controlled Jalisco, Nayarit and Michoacán. In the 16th century, Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés utilized Acapulco’s established port to anchor and resupply his ships. Cortés sent two ships northward to explore the coastline, one of which became shipwrecked in present-day Banderas Bay. Only three men survived said shipwreck, with numerous corpses washing ashore for native villagers to witness. Setting out northward from Acapulco in an attempt to establish a safe harbor, Cortes subsequently discovered a large bay at the village of Tintoque. As pirates were common in the area at that time, looting ships and burying treasure in the hillsides, a mob of local villagers believed Cortes to be a pirate himself. However, the villagers, who had armed themselves with native weapons and had met with Cortes, lowered their weapons upon being mesmerized by the Spaniards’ red flags, some of which likely had washed ashore in the aforementioned shipwreck. From that point onward, the Tintoque villagers allowed Cortes safe-passage in the area. In 1524, Cortés took control of the Ameca Valley, naming it Banderas after the natives’ colorful standards. The area’s bay was also named Bahía de Banderas. Thereafter, Tintoque village developed into a major port and safe harbor for ships traveling the Manila galleon, which linked Spanish trading ships from the Philippines (Spanish East Indies) to Mexico by way of the Pacific Ocean. During the 17th and 18th centuries, Banderas Bay harbored distressed supply ships, and the area became a port of entry for smuggled goods, which were transported inland to Sierra towns. Little else is known about the area until the 19th century. Las Peñas (eventual Puerto Vallarta) was founded on December 12, 1851. By 1885, the self-sustaining village of Las Peñas had expanded into about 250 homes and 800 residents. On May 31, 1918, Las Peñas was elevated to municipality status,  thus receiving its current name, Puerto Vallarta, in honor of Mexican jurist and governor Ignacio Vallarta, who governed the Mexican state of Jalisco from 1872-1876. Much like with Cancun, the Mexican government invested significantly in Puerto Vallarta. An international airport, ground transportation, highway and utility infrastructure and the El Salado wharf (present-day cruise terminal) all became significant developments. In the 1980s, Puerto Vallarta experienced a resort boom, albeit with lower standards of living in the outlying areas. From a largely unknown ancient past, to Spanish conquistadors, to a modern tourism boom-town, Puerto Vallarta has blossomed into one of Mexico’s most cherished travel destinations.

Home to around 225,000 Vallartenses, Puerto Vallarta is Jalisco’s second largest urban area behind only Guadalajara. Known also as pata salada, meaning “salty feet”, Vallartenses are known to be helpful and hospitable to tourists. At the foot of the Sierras Cuale and San Sebastián mountains, which are part of the 932-mile long Sierra Madre Occidental mountain range system, Puerta Vallarta extends along a narrow coastal plain. The plain widens to the north and reaches its widest point along the Ameca River. Accommodating around 6 million tourists annually, roughly 80% of Puerto Vallarta’s workforce is employed in the tourist sector. Several major cruise lines make regular stops at Puerto Vallarta Cruise Port. The resort town’s marine life includes dolphins, whales, sea turtles and tropical fish. Naturally, Puerto Vallarta makes for an excellent sport fishing destination, with top fishing charters to include Vikingo Charters and Fishing Rebels. Some of the area’s best surfing spots are found at La Lancha, Chacala and Bahía. Other watersport activates include snorkeling, scuba diving, banana boating and swimming with dolphins. Puerta Vallarta’s climate is tropical. Winters are typically dry, while summers are rainy. Average high temperatures range from 80-90 degrees Fahrenheit throughout the year, with the record low being recorded at 45 °F in December. Additional points of interest are downtown, Isla del Río Cuale, Aquaventures Park, Plaza de Armas (park), Parque Nacional Marino Los Arcos de Mismaloya (wildlife park) and Sea Horse Sculpture (El caballito). Local foods include various seafoods (yellowfin tuna, wahoo, red snapper, grouper, marlin, amberjack, crab, etc.), birria (traditional Jalisco stew), pescado zarandeado (grilled fish), ceviche (citrusy fish/shellfish dish), tortas ahogadas (Mexican sandwiches), tacos de marlin (marlin tacos), arrieros (burritos) and camarones embarazados (adobo grilled shrimp). Two of the area’s most popular alcohols are tequila and raicilla (agave-based distilled spirit), while a range of creative cocktails are always being shaken. Keep in mind that during happy hour, $1 drinks may be discovered. With some background information on the area, we’re ready for hotels in Puerto Vallarta that are sure to inspire.

Hotels in Acapulco

Best Hotels in Mexico

Hotels in Acapulco offer cost-effective accommodations in a destination with historical nicknames to include “America’s Paradise”, “Pearl of the Pacific” and “Riviera of Mexico”. A “beach resort town”, Acapulco today is known mostly for its playas (beaches) and cliff divers. Acapulco is located on Mexico’s southwestern coast. Acapulco Bay, composed of thick sands, is surrounded by the Sierra Madre del Sur Mountains. Much of south Acapulco is separated from mountains by Laguna de Tres Palos. Within the resort town, main attractions include Playa Puerto Marqués, La Isla Shopping Village (shopping mall), La Quebrada (tourist attraction – cliff diving), Diana the Huntress (monument), Playa Majahua, Caleta Beach, Playa la Roqueta (island public beach), Paititi del Mar (seafood restaurant), Parque De La Reina (garden), Revolcadero (beach), Mirador Sinfonía del Mar (scenic spot), Acapulco Historical Museum of Fort San Diego (history museum), La Finca Acapulco (restaurant), Esmirna del Mar (seafood restaurant), Playa La Bonfil, Mirador Puerto Marqués (scenic spot), Capilla de la Paz (Chapel of Peace – Catholic church), Arena GNP Seguros, Tres Vidas Golf Club Acapulco and Acapulco Botanical Garden. Acapulco, in truth, is a shell of its once thriving existence. A bona fide tourist destination for the likes of John Wayne, Frank Sinatra and Rita Hayworth, the resort town has since experienced an uptick in criminal activity and poverty. At present, most tourism is generated from within the country. Where there is adversity, though, there can be opportunity. If you are traveling to Acapulco there are, of course, some things to consider. You should not drink tap water. Taxi is probably the best way to get around the resort town, as Uber rideshare does not operate in Acapulco. Of course, it’s best not to venture far from tourist areas. Even in tourist areas, women should travel in groups, especially after dark. Violent crime, drug trade and sexual assault are known to occur, and police are known to be corrupt. If you experience a problem, it’s best to go directly to a US embassy or consulate. You should always check travel advisories and know that Acapulco is located in “Guerrero state”. Acapulco’s main airport is Acapulco International Airport (ACA). Currency is the Mexican Peso, cars travel on the right-hand side and the drinking age is 18 years old. Let’s take a look at some more background information on the area, in the event that Acapulco may yet return to greatness.

The Aztec ruler Ahuizotl, quite probably pre-Columbian Mesoamerica’s greatest military leader, took control of the Acapulco area around the late-1400s. Part of the Aztec Empire, the area was defended by the Yopes until the 1520s, when the Spanish arrived. By the 1530s, Acapulco developed into a major port at the behest of Spanish conquistador Hernán Cortés. At that time, a road between the Acapulco-area and Mexico City had also been constructed. Acapulco’s initial rise is attributed to Spanish trade. Cocoa, cotton and corn became the biggest local commodities. In 1615, Dutch invaders were cause for the construction of the Fort of San Diego. Said fort was destroyed by an earthquake in 1776, and rebuilt by 1783. Mexican-Roman Catholic priest and revolutionary José María Morelos y Pavón attacked and burned down the city circa 1810. During the 1910 Mexican Revolution, revolutionary forces took over Acapulco’s main plaza. Texas businessman Albert B. Pullen’s construction of Old Acapulco’s hotel and trading infrastructure in the 1920s marked the beginning of a relatively brief high-point in Acapulco’s rather dark history.

A port of call for shipping and cruise lines between Panama and San Francisco, Acapulco is home to around 660,000 acapulqueños (males) and acapulqueñas (females). One of Mexico’s oldest beach resort towns, Acapulco was once a thriving destination for celebrities and international tourists. Historically, Acapulco has been a prized sport-fishing destination, especially for blue and black marlin. For those brave enough to set out on the nightlife scene, Baby’O  and Palladium represent two of the resort town’s best nightclubs today. Consistent temperatures range in the low 70s to high 80s degrees Fahrenheit throughout the year. Wet season occurs from June through September, when average monthly rain falls at over 10 inches. Additional points of interest are Acapulco Bay, La Roqueta Island, Acapulco Diamante, Bay of Puerto Marqués, Catedral de Acapulco and Papagayo Park (Parque Papagayo). Popular foods include pozole (hominy soup or stew with meat, cabbage, chili peppers, onion, garlic, salsa), ceviche (fish / shellfish marinated in lime, mixed with tomatoes, cilantro, onions, green chilis), enchiladas and chalupas. “The Acapulco” is a cocktail made with tequila, rum, lime/pineapple/grapefruit juice and raw egg white. With some background information on the area, we’re ready for hotels in Acapulco.
