Known for its museums, architecture (Roman, Gothic, Baroque), Catholic churches, botanical gardens, beaches, pastel-colored buildings, azulejo-tiled facades, sloping cobblestone streets, mountain cable cars, brewpubs, pastry shops, nightlife, Fado music and sunny weather, Lisbon is surrounded by Sintra-Cascais Natural Park (protected area, seaside sloping mountains with a castle, rainforests, historical buildings, rare flowers / animals) to its northwest, Tagus Estuary Nature Reserve (protected river estuary, waterfowl, migratory birds) to its northeast and the Tagus River to its immediate south/east. The Lisbon Metro runs on four rail lines and serves 56 stations throughout the city. Good to know is that Uber rideshare operates in the city and encompasses the airport. Keep in mind that, like its nickname suggests, Lisbon has many sloping terrains. As such, it is advisable to bring sneakers / walking shoes. Traffic can be not so great at times, and parking can be expensive. Be sure to address ladies and gents as Senhora and Senhor, respectively, and never speak Spanish to a Portuguese person. Although Portuguese of course is the official language, English is also widely spoken, especially by those who work within the downtown tourist areas. In winter, you’ll want to pack a jacket, while in summertime light-colored clothing is recommended (though not all-white if you want to avoid looking like a tourist). If it’s raining, you’re better off with an umbrella than a poncho (touristy). Stretching in public is considered rude. Although Lisbon is generally a safe city, be aware of pickpockets. In Lisbon, currency is the Euro, the drinking age is 18 years old and cars travel on the right-hand side. Top events include Lisbon Carnival, Sónar Lisboa, Rock In Rio Lisboa, NOS Alive, Super Bock Super Rock, Festival de Sintra, Kalorama Lisboa, MONSTRA Lisbon Animated Film Festival and Lisbon Marathon. Before we get tp hotels in Lisbon, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way. 

Prior to the Roman era, the Lisbon area was inhabited by Pre-Celtic tribes and Pre-Indo-European tribes, respectively. From the 8th-6th centuries BC, an Iron Age people occupied the area and held commercial relations with the Phoenicians, as evidenced by excavations done near the Castle of São Jorge. A Phoenician presence in the area developed into a Carthaginian settlement, which led to clashes with the Roman Republic. Roman general and statesman Scipio Africanus, often regarded as one of the world’s all-time greatest military commanders and strategists, defeated Carthaginian forces in Eastern Hispania, or the Iberian Peninsula, around 200 BC. This Roman victory paved the way for the area to be integrated with the Roman province of Lusitania, with its citizens being granted Roman citizenship. Modern-day Lisbon would become known as Olissipo under Roman rule. Frequent raids and rebellions from the area’s Indo-European Lusistanians prompted the Romans to build a wall around the settlement. A great theater, baths, temples, a large necropolis, a large forum and multi-storied apartment buildings were built during the reign of Augustus, founder of the Roman Empire. Olissipo is remembered as a place of prosperity, with far-reaching trade routes to other Roman provinces, and prized, valuable exports such as garum (fish sauce), wine, salt and Lusitanian horses. Following anno Domini, Olissipo, like most of the Western Roman Empires’ great cities, was dismantled by way of Christianity. Potamius became the area’s first bishop circa 356 AD, around which time martyrs such as “The Holy Martyrs of Lisbon” (siblings) Verissimus, Maxima, and Julia were tormented and executed for refusing to renounce their Christian faith. Fading Olissipo would transition into a strong Christian center by the Fall of Rome. Barbarian invasions occurred following the fall of the Western Roman Empire. Starting in 409 AD, the area was occupied by Sarmatians (ancient Iranian nomadic peoples), Alans (North Caucasus nomads), Vandals (Germanic people), Suebi (Germanic) and Visigoths (Germanic), respectively. Muslim forces of the Umayyad Caliphate took the area in early August of 711 AD, which eventually led to the medieval, Islamic-Arab kingdom, Taifa of Lisbon’s etablishment circa 1022 AD. In 1094, the larger, Moorish, Taifa of Badajoz conquered the area. On their way to the Holy Land and as part of the Norwegian Crusade, Norwegian crusaders led by Sigurd I raided and briefly occupied the area in 1108, only to be supplanted by the Moorish Almoravids in 1111. With the aid of crusader knights, Afonso 1 of Portugal besieged and reconquered Lisbon in 1147, returning the city and its approximately 154,000 residents to Christian rule, which is considered one of the most significant events in Lisbon’s history. Mosques were either destroyed or converted into churches, and the Arabic language lost its place in everyday life before disappearing altogether. In 1255, Lisbon became the new Portuguese territory’s capital due to its central location, and by the end of the Middle Ages the city had become an important trading post among both Northern European and Mediterranean cities. From the end of the 15th century to the beginning of the 17th century, most Portuguese expeditions set sail from Lisbon during the Age of Discovery. In 1498, Vasco da Gama left Lisbon for India. Lisbon’s golden era occurred in the 16th century, when commerce among Africa, India, the Far East and Brazil flowed through the city. Spices, textiles, sugar and slaves were the main goods during a period when Manueline-style architecture arose. A sixty-year, Portugal/Spain dual monarchy was initiated in 1580 by way of the Spanish Habsburgs. The Portuguese Restoration War of 1640 ultimately restored Portuguese independence from the Habsburgs. Following a few centuries-worth of significant earthquakes, Brazilian gold allowed King John V to rebuild,  highlighted by several Baroque churches and theaters in the early 18th century. Napoléon Bonaparte invaded Portugal in the early 19th century, which forced Queen Maria I and Prince-Regent John to flee temporarily to Brazil. Carlos I of Portugal was assassinated in Lisbon on February 1, 1908. During World War II, Lisbon was one of the few neutral European ports, and harbored both refugees and spies. The 1940 Portuguese Exhibition attracted 3 million visitors. Throughout the 20th century, Lisbon was the site of three revolutions: the October 5, 1910 revolution, which ended the Portuguese monarchy and installed the unstable and corrupt Portuguese First Republic, the June 6, 1926 revolution, which ended the first republic and established the corporatist Estado Novo (Portuguese Second Republic), and the 1974 Carnation Revolution, which reformed the country into the semi-presidential, constitutional, Portuguese Third Republic of today.

Portugal’s capital and largest city, Lisbon today is home to around 550,000 “alfacinha”. Mainland Europe’s westernmost capital, Lisbon is bound on the west by the affluent Portuguese Riviera. Lisboa is one of the world’s oldest cities, as well as Portugal’s political center. PSI-20, part of Euronext Lisbon, is a benchmark stock market index of companies that held a market capitalization of over €60 billion in 2010. Over 3,000,000 tourists visit Lisbon annually. Naturally, Lisbon Cruise Port, with its bustling three-floor terminal, is one of Europe’s leading cruise line destinations. Alfa Pendular, a high-speed railway capable of reaching 137 miles per hour, connects Lisbon to Portugal’s other major cities. City of Seven Hill’s symbol is the raven, while Its coat of arms, depicted by a golden shield, a black sailing ship and two inner-facing ravens, has existed since the 12th century.
