Hotels in Athens

Hotels in Athens offer incredible views of some of the world’s most ancient and cherished architecture in a destination nicknamed “The City of the Violet Crown”.  Known for democracy and philosophy, Athens’ history is well-preserved and visible to this day. The Acropolis, arguably Athens’ most famous landmark, dates to the fifth century BC.  When traveling to Athens, it’s a good idea to carry cash, though it’s best kept secured in public areas. Currency is the Euro and the drinking age is 18 years old.  Athens Epidaurus Festival, Apokries (Carnival), Rockwave Festival, Release Athens Festival, Athens Street Food Festival, Athens Photo Festival, Athens Open Air Film Festival, Athens Digital Arts Festival and Athens Technopolis Jazz Festival are some of the city’s biggest events. Olympiacos, Greece’s most successful football club, plays its games at Karaiskaki Stadium in the port city Pireas, which is directly southwest of Athens. Hotels in Athens are exciting to consider. Before we get to hotels in Athens, let’s take a look at some background information on the area to help you along the way.

For 5,000 years mankind has thrived in the area around Athens. Further evidence from the Cave of Schist dates human existence in the area to around 9,000 BC. Throughout early history, Athenians were burdened by Persian Empire invasions. As lionized in the movie 300, King Leonidas, with around 7,000 Greeks, attempted to fend off as much as 300,000 Persians during the Battle of Thermopylae, which resulted in a Greek defeat. The Greeks won back their land from the Persians by way of the Battle of Plataea. Thereafter, the Golden Age of Athenian democracy saw the likes of Socrates and Pericles transform Athens into a major, Ancient Greek city, and the cornerstone of what would become Western Civilization. During Late Antiquity, Athens saw both prosperity by way of the Crusades and Italian trade, and collapse via the Ottoman Empire invasion of 1458. It wasn’t until 1832 through the Greek War of Independence that Greece at last achieved independence from the Ottoman Empire, becoming the Kingdom of Greece. Athens gradually expanded outward from the Acropolis in the form of Neoclassical architecture. The first modern Olympic Games were held in Athens circa 1896. Following World War II, the city experienced a rapid growth in population, resulting in a different type of invasion, this time from air pollution. Anti-pollution measures in the 1990s, as well as improvements in infrastructure, resulted in better air quality. In 2004, over a hundred years since its first Olympic trials, Athens hosted the Summer Olympics.

One of the world’s oldest cities and a popular tourist destination since antiquity, Athens is the capital and largest city in Greece. Today the city is home to over 650,000 Greeks. It experiences a hot-summer Mediterranean climate, with summer high temperatures averaging in the low-90s degrees Fahrenheit, and average winter temps in the mid-50s. Architectural styles range from Greco-Roman to Neoclassical to modern. Building height restriction laws ensure that the Acropolis remains visible throughout the city. Infrastructure and local attractions have further improved due largely to the 2004 Olympics. Nearly 150 theatrical stages occupy Athens. A worldly center for archaeological research, The City of the Violet Crown has as much to discover above ground as it does below.  Major points of interest include Zappeion Hall, Monastiraki, Lycabettus, Panathenaic StadiumAthens Olympic Sports Complex, Hellenic Parliament, Roman Agora, Temple of Olympian Zeus, Stadiou Street, Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, National Gardens, Ermou street, Athens Tower, National Library of Greece, Academy of Athens, Athens University, Old Parliament House, Acropolis Museum, National Theatre of Greece, Karaiskakis Stadium and The Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre. Traditional Greek food includes souvlaki, or grilled meat skewers, moussaka, a type of pasta similar to lasagna, spanakopita (pronounced spae·nuh·kow·puh·tuh), which is spinach pie, and horiatiki salad. Greece’s most popular alcoholic beverage is Ouzo, a spirit made from grapes, with a taste much like that of absinthe. Additionally, a type of white sparkling wine is known as Debina. Now that we have some background information on the area, it’s time for hotels in Athens that are sure to help make for an outstanding trip.

Cashmere in Love

So there they are, hotels in Athens that will help provide for an outstanding experience. We hope you have found this information valuable and most importantly, that you enjoy your time in Greece!

  1. I never knew penthouses were, so affordable.  I always thought that they were out of my reach, but looking at the prices I think I might start looking at renting penthouses instead of hotels when I travel.  How did you come up with your cost per person price?  Does it just assume you will be traveling with friends and will split the cost?  Since they are penthouses I’m assuming you rent the entire thing, right?  Are those prices in USD?

    1. Hi Thomas, great questions. Cost per person would be if you are traveling in a group and splitting the costs yes. Since penthouses almost always come with multiple bedrooms it is a great way to travel with friends or family. All prices are in USD with applicable taxes and fees included.

  2. Thanks for providing this list. I never thought there are some penthouses in Athens too. I am planning to take a long vacation there next year with my group of friends. Instead of staying at hotel, I think penthouse is great to rent because of the luxury that we can get and it is cheaper with more friends. I love the Athinas penthouse, will try to recommend it to my friends. Thanks

  3. Wow I could actually afford these!

I was starstruck at the Alto Psyrri Penthouse, I figured that it might be more than what I can afford but when I found that it’s only $658 per night for such a huge and luxurious setting, you knocked me out of my socks! I usually spend around $500 for hotel rooms but man, staying at a penthouse with so many benefits and amazing view like this, why didn’t I think of that.

Thanks for taking the time to compile this, do you have plans to cover penthouses in Asia too in the near future? I’ll be going to Indonesia next month and would love to stay at one of your recommended penthouses there 😀

  4. Your content about penthouses is interesting.  Instead of talking about the distance from other places around the penthouses, it would be better to list them in bullet points.  And then talk about the transport from penthouses to these places.  If I were the traveller, I would like to know how to go to these places.  Also please include the ratings of these penthouses. And is breakfast included in that price? How much is the breakfast if I want to include it? These information would be helpful to readers.

  5. Hi; the mentioned prices seems to be affordable. I can afford the price for any of the mentioned resort. I do take you at your word to chose one of the locations. However, I am much visual, I miss out on not being able to see the inside of where I would want to spend a few days at a reasonable cost.

My understanding though, according to the description it sounds like I would have to do things for myself. Would it be so for all the accommodations?

    DorcasW

    1. Hi Dorcas, clicking the links will take you instantly to inside photos. As far as doing things you are free to do whatever you please, within reason.

  6. I always had the mind set that penthouses are for the rich people not for the middle class and after reading your review it totally changed my view. It’s really hard to believe in the renting prices of penthouses and I am unaware that they come with such an affordable price, thanks for sharing.

For those who love to travel, Athens will be on their list and it’s the same for me. The details you shared on “What’s around?” is very helpful and adding more value to this post.

Going with friends and family is the best and wise thing we can do which will make it affordable. Arrianou Acropolis Penthouse and Lycabettus Hill Penthouse is the two I am interested with.

I am bookmarking your post for future reference and you have really given a lot of value here.

    Much Success!

    Paul

  7. Alexander’s Penthouse looks fantastic, I love the architecture of the buildings you show in the picture. The spectacular views of the Parthenon, definately is something I would like to see with my own eyes. I love how you list many of the nearby attractions, make me easily visulize the kinda of holiday I might have their.  Can’t wait to visit

  8. Hi,

I’ve personally never been to Athens but it’s on my list. I just have one question:

What is the difference between the cost per night and cost per person? Is the payment separate or is it together. It isn’t really that clear.

Other than that, the places sound exciting and I will keep your selections in mind.

    1. Hi Ann and thank you for the comments. Cost per person is if you are traveling in a group. As most penthouses come with 2 or 3 bedrooms this becomes a great way to travel with friends of family.

  9. Hello,

Thanks for writing this article. I did not know about the Penthouses. Your article was good to read about Penthouses. I am planning to take a long vacation there next month with my group of friends. I think Penthouses will provide much better benefits for our travel. The cost of this hotel will not be so difficult for all of our friends to carry on.

This information would be helpful to me.

    1. Thank you Khobayer! Penthouses are an excellent way to travel in a group. May your trip be an exciting one.

  10. Thank you for this review of penthouses in Athens. These sound very luxurious and accommodating. They are also affordable for group travelers. I do plan to travel in the future but with my significant other only. I wonder if there are more affordable choices for people who don’t travel on large groups.

    1. Hi Sherry great question. If traveling with your significant other only you might check out Acropolis View Penthouse, which averages only about $193 per night and is as luxurious as any.

  11. Hey, thanks for this detailed list about the penthouses. It seems that these are more affordable than hotels. Is everything included in the price, or you have to provide yourself with food?

This is another way of me to get accommodation in the places I will visit in the future. Thank you

    1. Hi Oana, taxes, resort fees and cleaning fees are all calculated in the price. Food is not. Remember that Penthouses come with fully equipped kitchens, so checking out local grocers and butchers is always a great option.

  12. This is a great presentation, you made a list of the best penthouse of Athens.

Athens is one the must see city in my travel list. And I think the view from a penthouse is magical. I will admit that the prices are surprisingly affordable. I just hope that during the high season the prices don’t spike, but I guess an early booking will do. The best one for me is Κaraiskaki 27-29 & Μikonos 1, it’s really awesome.

Thanks for this great post, you sold me a dream and I wish to realize it very soon. I have bookmarked this post

  13. I am in love with this site! Your coupling of history and luxury had pushed Athens to the top of my list. I recently bought a travel book for Greece, but have been struggling with where to stay. Knowing what’s around and very good idea of how much it is going to cost me, has taken a load off my shoulders for scheduling this trip! Thank you!

    1. Jenny you’re very welcome. When you start to think about history coupled with luxury, hotels in Athens Greece definitely are up there on the bucket list. Glad you found value in the pricing as it makes for a nice gauge. May your Athens trip be a memorable one!

  14. I have always been interested in visiting Greece and now that I have seen these various penthouse options, I think my desire has only increased. I am particularly floored by the Thission Penthouse and Athinas Street Penthouse views that you have shown. It reminds me a great deal of when my wife and I went to Florence and would nightly go on the rooftop garden of our hotel and look out over the city. However, with these options, you get to see the awe-inspiring Acropolis! Very cool! Thanks for the post!

    1. Steve your Florence trip sounds amazing. Knowing a little bit about the history of the Acropolis, and being able to achieve such nightly and daily views, it makes for a truly inspiring trip indeed. Thanks for the comments and happy travels!

  15. Thanks so much for taking your time and coming up with this information. The Ma Maison Penthouse has a very friendly price but also I would like to know is there any meal included in that price. The surrounding places are the cost of things high or low?. Otherwise, I love all about it.

    1. Hi Jeff and thanks for the comments. Please keep in mind that these are approximate prices and may change due to certain factors (demand for example). As far as the Ma Maison Penthouse pricing is concerned, meals are not included in the estimate; however, a fully-equipped kitchen is,creating an opportunity to keep food costs minimal. Greece is pretty reasonable depending on which currency you are converting of course. Hope that helps and happy travels!

  16. Acropolis Duplex Penthouse is it for me…the last time i was in Athens i lodged at his penthouse as it was one of the best experience that I had compared to my last time in Athens which was a disaster because i didn’t plan it very well as the hotel that lodged was a total rubbish but i must say with this info i have gotten i think i would be getting a better penthouse from your list.

  17. This is very very good to see that I would be able to make so out of my journey down to Athens. I have never been there before but once the lockdown is lifted I think it will be a beautiful Idea to be at that awesome city. There are nice hotels here and I think they are close to good tourist centres. I would visit soon. Thanks

    1. Hotels in Athens Greece is an awesome city to visit and hopefully you get to travel there soon Henderson. Thanks for the comments!
