Hotels in Cape Town

Hotels in Cape Town offer some of South Africa’s finest accommodations in a destination nicknamed “Mother City”. Known for its harbor, natural surroundings, landmarks, coastline, vineyards, beaches, cuisine, gardens and museums, Cape Town is the oldest town in South Africa. For the adventurous, hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, scuba diving, surfing, bungee jumping, whale watching, shark diving and penguin and seal viewing can be entertaining activities. When traveling to the Mother City, keep in mind that cars drive on the left, tap water is generally safe, and cricket and rugby are major sports. Currency is the South African rand and the legal drinking age is 18 years old. While tourist areas generally are safe, nearby townships or “flats” should be avoided. Big events include The Sun Met Horse Race, Cape Town Carnival, Cape Town International Jazz Festival, Smalltown Beat, Rocking the Daisies, Shakespeare at Maynardville Open-Air Theatre, SA Women’s Open, Two Oceans Marathon, Cape Town Cycle Tour, Cape Epic and TECHSPO Cape Town. Cape Town City FC is the area’s professional football club. Hotels in Cape Town can be exciting to consider. Before we get to hotels in Cape Town, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.

Archaeological evidence of human activity in the Cape Town area dates back 15,000 years.  However, not much is known about its habitation pre-1488, when Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias arrived, naming the area “Cape of Storms”.  Thereafter, the area was defined by the Dutch, British and South African periods, respectively. The Dutch planted several nonnative plant species such as grapes, cereals, ground nuts, apples, potatoes and citrus, which would change the natural environment forever. British forces supplanted Cape Town from the Dutch in 1795. The Brits introduced their own plants, most notably roolkrans in what would become the “flats” area, and eucalyptus to mitigate the spread of malaria. Along with the discovery of diamonds in 1867 came a flood of immigrants and war by way of the Second Boer War, which resulted in a British victory. During the mid-1900s, South Africa’s governing party was the National Party, which implemented racial segregation known as apartheid. Nelson Mandela, an anti-apartheid revolutionary and member of the African National Congress party, was the first president of South Africa and known as “the founding father of democracy” in the area.

The capital and oldest city in South Africa,  Cape Town has a population of around 500,000 people. Located on the southern tip of Africa, Mother City is known for its harbor, its natural setting and its landmarks such as Table Mountain and Cape Point. One of the most multicultural cities in the world, Cape Town was industrialized mostly from the discovery of diamonds in 1867 and a gold rush in 1886. The city has average highs in the 70s degrees Fahrenheit for much of the year and benefits from cool to warm evenings. Hiking trails and beaches are abundant. Table Mountain is one of the most distinguishable mountains in any of the world’s major cities due to its flat top. Tourists may travel by cable-way and hikers may travel on foot to Table Mountain’s peak, which is over 3,500 feet high.  Ocean temperatures differ depending on which coast you’re on, with the Atlantic side being colder, and the False Bay side being warmer. Major points of interest include St. George’s Cathedral, Cape Town, City Bowl, Table Mountain National Park, Clifton beach, Robben Island Museum, V&A Waterfront, Cape Floristic Region, Simon’s Town, Cape Town City Hall, Cape Town International Convention Centre, Artscape Theatre Centre, Grand Parade and University of Cape Town. Barbecue is a common cooking method. Popular foods include meats and seafood, Bobotie, which is spiced minced meat baked and topped with egg, and the Gatsby sandwich, prepared with one staple, French fries, and various other fillings such as steak, fish, calamari, chicken or sausage. Beer and wine are the most widely consumed alcoholic beverages. Equipped with some background knowledge on the area, we are ready for hotels in Cape Town that will help make for a remarkable experience.

39 Replies to “Hotels in Cape Town”

  1. The view from 7 Main Drive is breathtaking. Going over the skyline and looking into the water is amazing. I don’t think I could leave the deck. But while I’d be in Cape Town, I’d love to check out these nearby attractions at places like Urban Park, Cape Town Stadium, and the Golf Club. Further, the price is pretty cheap, at $51/night per person. You really can’t beat that.

  2. Decisions, decisions.   I did not expect to find so many penthouses to select from in the Capetown area.   I believe that my family and I could be happy staying in any one of these penthouses.   I love the ocean views!      Thank you for sharing which ones had exceptionally high demand.    Most of the time, I prefer last minute vacations.

Thank you for sharing all of the information that you did.  It will be helpful as I plan my holiday..

    1. Hi Sondra and thank you for the comments! You and your family would be very happy staying in one of these penthouses for sure 🙂

  3. I’ve been hearing a lot of beautiful things about how vibrant Cape town is. The culture and people depict the place so well. It’s good to know that there are lots of option in terms of place where you might want to spend your vacay in Cape Town. The array of penthouse you suggested looks elegant and comfy at the same time. My top choices would be the Bayview Penthouse which is overlooking the ocean. It looks peaceful and tranquil knowing you’ll wake up looking at a serene  view. The other one would be Penthouse Harbor Bridge just because it looks modern and bringing my teens wouldn’t be a hassle. Thanks for all these recommendation. I hope one time we can arrange an unforgettable vacation at Cape town.

  4. Loving your website.  The view from the Medburn Road Penthouse looks spectacular.  Being close to so many amenities is also appealing, especially the airport only being 12 miles away.

I have never been to South Africa but a friend of mine is from there and it sounds like a beautiful place to visit.  With the availability of such nice accomodations, it is high on my list of places to travel to.

    Thanks for the great article.

  5. First off I love your site design, it is more than welcome, or, shall I dare say,  alluring. That banner is everything! This is very nice, I mean very very nice. I have to reference this in the future. Is this just for this particular location or you are having more penthouse rentals later in different states and countries? Also, are considering working with travel agents that offer package deals for travel and stay? This would be so great for our clients.

    1. Thank you very much Shamane! Really glad you like the website design and always stay tuned for more penthouse options.

  6. Thank you so much for the beautiful review of the Cape Town area apartments.I am actually planning to go on holiday there with the family at the end of August and we were wondering if it would be better to stay in a hotel or rent an apartment. Reading your description definitely made me think an apartment would be better and with everything we need. Especially the Medbrun View Penthouse looks amazing.
Thank you so much for opening my eyes to the different possibilities even on a holiday.

  7. I like the ocean view of these penthouses for rent, it’s so relaxing and I guess with that benefit alone the price you’re paying is really worth it. I’m sure our team members will like them as well. We all love the view of the sea and the blue horizon.

Before this year ends, our group will be coming over South Africa for a business expansion and I will use this list of yours as a reference for finding a place to stay, all company-sponsored. Thanks for the list, I will check them one by one to see what’s fitted for our group’s needs.

  8. All the penthouse you recommend looks classy and elegant with its modem interiors. Renting one for a vacation will be cost efficient if shared with friends or family members. The culture and people depict the place so well. It’s good to know that there are lots of options in terms of the place where you might want to spend your vacay in Cape Town. The array of penthouse you suggested looks elegant and comfy at the same time.

I love Ocean views! My top choice would be the Bayview Penthouse which is overlooking the Ocean. It looks peaceful and tranquil knowing you’ll wake up looking at a serene view. I believe that my family and I could be happy staying in any one of these penthouses.

  20. I read about Robben Island Museum in “The 5AM Club” by Robin Sharma. He briefly tells the story of how Nelson Mandela grew his power while in prison, opening himself to forgiving his jailors, rather than condemn them. He also writes about the vineyards around Cape Town and the excellent wine they produce. I didn’t even know South Africa made wine!
