Hotels in Shanghai China

Nicknamed “Paris of the East” and “Pearl of the Orient”, Shanghai sits on China’s eastern coast, with the island of Taiwan to its south, Japan across the East China Sea to the east, South Korea across the Yellow Sea to the northeast and Beijing over 800 miles to the northwest. Known for its historical landmarks, its impressive skyline, its youthful inhabitants and its “Bund”, which is a mile-long waterfront promenade housing over fifty buildings of Gothic, Baroque, Art Deco and more architectural styles, this major worldly city is a definite bucket-list travel candidate, especially when considering any of the hotels in Shanghai China found below.  When visiting any of these hotels in Shanghai China, you may want to travel outside the beaten path at times, visiting museums, art galleries and temples. Keep in mind that you should not drink tap water, and that many public restrooms do not provide toilet paper. Before we get to hotels in Shanghai China, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.

Shanghai, located on China’s eastern coast, is at the end of the Yangtze River, which is the world’s third-longest river, as well as the world’s longest river to flow entirely within one country. With over 24 million inhabitants, Shanghai is the most populated city in China and the second most populated city in the world behind Tokyo. The Port of Shanghai is the busiest container port in the world. An ancient city, Shanghai was inhabited about 6,000 years ago, becoming first a fishing village and then a market town. Due largely to its favorable port location, the city grew during the 19th century and expanded rapidly after the 1930s. Two years prior to the start of World War II, the three-month-long Battle of Shanghai occurred between the Republic of China and the Empire of Japan, resulting in a Japanese victory. In the 1990s, economic reforms took place, as evidenced today in places such as the Shanghai Stock Exchange and the Shanghai Free-Trade Zone.

The city’s climate is considered humid subtropical, with average highs around 90 degrees Fahrenheit in July and around 46 degrees in January. Shanghai has a wide array of architectural styles, perhaps most notably The Bund, a row of early 20th century structures. The city contributes to around 3.7% of China’s GDP, with its largest industries being finance, retail, real estate, IT, machine and automotive manufacturing. Major points of interest are Lujiazui, Huangpu River, Yu Garden, China Art Museum, Qibao, Nanjing Road, Songjiang Square Pagoda, Zhenru Temple, East Nanjing Road, Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Grand Theater, Shanghai Exhibition Center, Oriental Pearl Tower, Shanghai Tower, St. Ignatius Cathedral, to name a few. Popular foods include seafoods such as crucian carp, Shanghai crab and mandarin fish, chicken wrapped in lotus leaves known as Beggar’s chicken, pork belly, Lion’s head, which is a type of pork meatball, sweet and sour spare ribs and dumplings, to name a few, with drinks including the traditional Baijiu alcoholic drink, beer, milk tea, coffee and coconut milk. Equipped with some background information, it’s time for hotels in Shanghai China that provide the utmost in luxury.

  1. Shanghai is a home of beauty and very many artefacts and seeing that they offer their fair share of providing options of hotels that are really of great quality. This is good. Thumbs up to you for sharing all these here. I just could not single pick from the list here. They all just look too amazing to be true

  2. This is a great comprehensive guide for penthouse rentals in Shanghai! As someone who’s interested in history, I appreciate the information about Shanghai’s history, climate, and points of interest at the beginning of the article. I had no idea that the Port of Shanghai is the busiest container port in the world! The listing that jumped out to me above the rest was the St. Regis, mostly due to proximity to the natural history museum and Jade temple. Thanks for this great article!

  3. Hi,

thank you for this list! All these hotels are looking really fancy and the number of extra features in each one of them is quite impressive. I just have one question about the view: Let’s say I book a room in a hotel (not a suite). Is it safe that I will get a good view of the city? Or could I end up facing another skyscraper? That would make the holiday experience less unforgettable 🙂

    1. Hi Alex, great question. Generally the higher the price the better the view, and you should be able to get the details next to each particular room, so keep a close eye there 🙂

  4. This is one of  the best hotel have ever been too in my life the Capella Shanghai, Jian Ye Li,in Shanghai, the room is very big, nice kitchen foods, they have a nice swimming  pool and it’s a very conducive area to be in,I ll be in Shanghai  soon and am happy for seeing this post right now gonna book in for it,thanks for this great article  about Shanghai  hotels

  5. As much as i like the life of a casual person, I like enjoying the live and fun that comes with luxury too. His post has really expanse my knowledge so widely and has also showed me on what to do and where to enjoy the bliss of luxury if I were ever to visit the great city of Shanghai. Well! I have heard some things about the place but none as good as the listing here. Thanks
