Hotels in Zurich offer excellent accommodations in a destination nicknamed Züri. Known for its architecture, museums, parks, gardens, squares, churches, spas, salons, Christmas markets, recreational activities, natural surroundings and chocolate, Zurich is located in northern Switzerland, just 15 miles from Germany’s southern border. As such, Zurich’s people speak a Swiss German dialect. The Limmat river commences in southern Zurich and continues northwesterly for 22 miles, where it converges with the Aare river. Penetrating Zurich’s central Old Town District 1, Lake Zurich, Switzerland’s 6th-largest lake at about 34 square miles, is roughly 25 miles long and about 1.85 miles at its widest point. Very clean and nice for swimming, Lake Zurich’s water is actually potable when filtered.

Good to know is that Uber rideshare does operate in Zurich, with service encompassing the airport. Roadways are maintained well and public transportation is some of the world’s best. Zürich S-Bahn is the city’s mass transportation network of rail lines, while the Zurich Hb train line connects to certain distant cities. When traveling to Zurich, keep in mind that it is walkable, with many great river and lakeside trails. Sneakers and a bathing suit are good to pack, especially during summer months. Unless you plan on exploring more of Lake Zurich’s shoreline (recommended!). renting a car is not entirely necessary, and a 3-4 day stay should be plenty of time. In Zurich, Currency is the Swiss Franc, cars travel on the right-hand side and the drinking age is 18 years old. Top events include Zurich Festival, Zurich Street Parade, Zurich Spring Festival, Zürich Openair, Zurich Caliente, Apples & Olives Musikfestival, Zuri Carneval, Zurich Film Festival, Zurich Marathon, Sechselauten and Swiss IT Conference. Hotels in Zurich are some of Switzerland’s best accommodations. Before we get to hotels in Zurich, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.
During the Neolithic and Bronze Ages, Lake Zurich’s surrounding lands naturally made for great settlement areas. The Celtic, pre-Roman, Iron Age La Tène culture settled near central Zurich’s Lindenhof hill. In 15 BC, during Roman times, a castellum, or small Roman tower, was built on Lindenhof. Turicum, a Galo-Roman settlement at Lake Zurich’s lower end, was developed to collect taxes on goods trafficked on the Limmat. Roman occupation developed from a tower to a settlement, and eventually into a vicus, or rural village. Between Lake Walen and Lake Zürich, a Roman castle and garrison formed. A 2nd-century tombstone, which references Statio Turicensis Quadragesima Galliarum, or “Zürich post for collecting the 2.5% value tax of the Galliae”, has been discovered at Lindenhof. Germanic Alemannis settled in the Swiss Plateau between the Jura Mountains and Swiss Alps circa the 5th century. Until the 7th century, the Roman castle between the lakes Walen and Zurich remained standing. In 835, however, Louis the German, grandson of Charlemagne, king of the Franks, demolished the Roman castle and built a Carolingian castle on its site. Zurich’s Fraumünster church was founded in 853 by Louis the German for his daughter Hildegard. The Catholic Order of Saint Benedict was endowed with Zürich, Uri, and Albis forest lands, and was granted immunity under Louis’ direct authority. King Henry III, in 1045, granted the Benedictine convent the right to hold markets, collect tolls and mint coins, effectively granting the abbess, or female superior of the Fraumünster abbey, rule over the city. Imperial immediacy, a privileged constitutional and political status, was given to Zurich in 1216 as a result of the House of Zähringen’s extinction. In the 1230s, a city wall was built, with Louis the German’s Carolingian castle, which had begun to fall into ruin, serving as a quarry. The Fraumünster abbess was promoted to the rank of duchess by Emperor Frederick II in 1234, at which time a mayor was nominated, and citizens were delegated to mint coins. Rudolf Brun, leader of Zurich’s 1336 guilds’ revolution and the city’s first independent mayor not nominated by the abbess, was cause for the convent’s political demise in the 14th century. Manesse Codex, a Middle High German Minnesang poetry, was commissioned by the Manesse family of Zürich during the 14th century. The Zürich massacre of 1349, allegedly as a result of Jews’ murdering and taking the blood of a Zurich man’s four year old son along with their well poisoning during the time of Black Death, resulted in about 60 Jews’ deaths by fire and their accomplices being banished from Zurich. The Swiss Confederacy, on May 1, 1351, required Zurich’s citizens to swear allegiance to the confederation, thus incorporating Zurich as the Confederacy’s fifth member alongside Lucerne, Schwyz, Uri and Unterwalden. From the Middle Ages until the establishment of the Swiss federal state in 1848, Zurich, as presiding canton, became the confederacy’s executive council and lawmaking body. The Old Zurich War of 1440, prompted by a dispute over the territory of Toggenburg, caused Zurich’s temporary expulsion from the confederacy, followed by its readmittance in 1450. Switzerland’s Protestant Reformation was started by Ulrich Zwingli during his time as the Grossmünster‘s main preacher in 1519. In 1531, Christoph Froschauer printed the Zürich Bible. Prompted by the Thirty Years’ War, a second ring of fortifications was built around the city in 1624, and in 1648 Zurich proclaimed itself a republic. Zurich lost control of land and economic privileges it had gained by way of the 1798 Helvetic Revolution and subsequent fall of the Kingdom of France’s Ancien Régime, a political and social system. Without ever having been besieged, the city’s 17th century ramparts were torn down at the end of 1839 following the Züriputsch, a putsch by the rural conservative population against the city’s liberal rule. In 1859, the Treaty of Zurich amongst Austria, France and Sardinia brought the Austro-Sardinian War to an official close. During the 19th century, the city’s extensive developments included the Spanisch-Brötli-Bahn railway, the Hauptbahnhof (Zürich HB) main railway station, Bahnhofstrasse (Station Street) and the Zürich Stock Exchange. Indeed, relative to other European cities, and throughout its history, Zurich was largely unscathed by battle, though during World War II, the city was accidentally bombed by six USAAF B-24H bombers, who believed they were bombing the German city of Freiburg im Breisgau.
Not to be confused with Lake Zurich, Illinois, Zurich, Switzerland is home to over 415,000 Zürchers. Züri is Switzerland’s largest city, and also the capital of the canton of Zürich. Zürichsee is another name for Lake Zurich, which drops 446 feet at its maximum depth. Rarely, Lake Zurich freezes over, which is considered a bit of a phenomenon. Although Swiss German is the city’s official language, English is also widely spoken. One of the world’s most livable cities, Zurich is also one of the most expensive. Low tax rates and canton funding make Zurich an attractive haven for overseas business. Switzerland’s banking epicenter, Zurich is home to guild architecture. As prostitution is legal in Switzerland, Zurich’s red-light district is located in Langstrasse. Although Zurich generally is a very safe city, the Langstrasse red-light district area does have an above-average crime rate, mostly due to drug dealing. Good to know, perhaps, is that sexting is illegal in Switzerland. Distant, snow-capped, central Swiss Alps mountains, about 80 miles away, are visible on clear days from Züri. The city’s climate is oceanic, with four seasons. Summers are warm, with high temperatures averaging around 75 degrees Fahrenheit in July, while January winters average below freezing. Besides summer, Christmastime is also a great time to visit Zurich. Additional points of interest include Old Town, St. Peter Church, Niederdorf (nightlife district), Augustinergasse (Old Town pedestrian zone / medieval lane), Münsterhof (square / Guild houses), Münsterbrücke (pedestrian/road bridge), Paradeplatz (square), Schauspielhaus Zürich, Theater am Neumarkt, Prime Tower, University of Zurich, ETH Zurich and Swiss Institute of Technology. Popular foods include zurcher geschnetzeltes (sliced veal in gravy), alplermagronen (gratin), birchermüesli (muesli), rösti (shredded fried potatoes), burli (bread rolls), Luxemburgerl (mini-macaroons), Swiss chocolate, cheese fondue and Swiss cheese. Generally, cocktails are not extremely popular, with beer, wine, mojitos and caipirinha being the main alcoholic drinks, while non-alcoholic drinks are tea and Rivella (soda). With a little background information on the area, we’re ready for hotels in Zurich that will help make for an exciting trip.

So there they are, hotels in Zurich that will help make for an outstanding trip. We hope you have found this information valuable and most of all, that you enjoy your time in Switzerland!
Another awesome post. I love reading from your website. Switzerland is the most sought after destination for those who love travelling. I’ve never been to Switzerland before, but always wanted to go there.
Your post has motivated me to plan my travel to Zurich. You have offered great recommendations. I’ll make a note of them and have further discussion with my family members before making final plan. This post will help us as a great guide.
Thanks a lot for your efforts on creating this useful post.
Thank you again Akshay! Hope you get to go to Switzerland soon. Take care!
This is very enticing to consider traveling in luxury, but I can see the appeal. Beautiful views, close to the main attractions. Thanks for including links to restaurants, clubs, gyms, shops, (and especially bakeries, my favorite in Europe). If you are going to travel, take time off work, it makes sense to do it in style and really treat yourself. What about prices? I wish I could see what I was looking at in prices, maybe a general ballpark on your page before going to the booking site. Thanks for showing us the value of staying in beautiful places when traveling to a beautiful place.
Thank you Stacey. Will keep in mind your recommendation on pricing but keep in mind there are many factors involved and pricing is always changing. Of course it’s better to book more in advance when prices are lower. Glad you found the information of bakeries particularly useful. Happy travels to you!
Hi, I must say that this article is very helpful and informative. I have been to Zurich 3 years ago with my family and that city is a wonderful place to stay. I actually was in a cheap apartment but now when I look at these images I must spare some money to rent such nice penthouse. My wife will be amazed when I show this to her.
Hi Daniel, thank you! Glad to hear that you’ve been to Zurich and that you’re considering going back. Wish wishes and happy journeys to you and your family!
We are working on an itinerary for our upcoming European holiday and from what we are seeing here Zurich looks absolutely stunning. The accommodations you’ve showcased here are magnificent.
Any thoughts on how long we should stay in the actual city to get the full experience? We want to make the most of our time there but there are so many other awesome places to explore too…
Thanks so much!
Thank you Judy, Zurich is definitely an amazing city for your European trip! How long you stay in Zurich really depends on how long you plan on staying in other places and how much time you have overall. Zurich would be a fine choice to spend at least 20% of your time. Hope your European trip is an amazing one, happy travels 😁
These look absolutely gorgeous! I am ready to go now! LOL. This is great information especially for someone like me who doesn’t travel very much and needs the help finding where to go. This gave me information on lodging, eating, shopping, everything.
Thank you so much for the help and the great display of places to go. Hope to see you there!
Angela thank you so much for the comments. So glad you found them helpful and inviting. Let’s go! 😉
Quite the luxurious accommodations! I hadn’t given much thought about traveling to Zurich in the past, but it looks like it’s now one to add to the list! It’s also very nice to have the nearby items of interest located underneath each accommodation. It would be a great experience to rent one of these spaces with a few friends and really treat yourself during your trip.
Hi Haleigh thank you so much for the comments! One of the best things about a penthouse is that you can travel in a group and split the costs, so you are spot-on there. Hope your travels are amazing out there!
We have been planning a family trip to Zurich for a couple of years now. So I decided to also take a look at the Penthouses you had listed for this city. And this time I had no difficulty to make up my mind. It was quite obvious for us that our best option was Limmatquai 82, 1. Zurich Old Town.
Thank you very much for researching about all these penthouses and bringing us the very best!
Thank you again Henry! Thrilled to hear that you found a favorite once more. Hope to see you again soon!
Ever since I was a kid I had this innate desire to visit Switzerland. And I think it’s not just me. There are millions around the world who would want to visit Switzerland at least once in their lifetime.
You have compiled a great list of penthouse options, which will surely motivate anyone reading your post to visit Zurich, Switzerland.
And believe me, it has triggered my desire to put my visit to Switzerland on top of my bucket list.
Thanks a lot for this amazing post
Nick
Thank you Nick, may your Switzerland trip be a rewarding one!
Oh I do wish that your site didn’t keep popping up. When it does, no matter how I try i can’t resist it. And without fail whenever I open it I get very jealous.
Once again you present an amazing city in a style that many never think is affordable. I love the penthouse at Naphtastrasse, it looks totally amazing.
Thanks once again for making me green with envy.
Adrian hah! PINside penthouse with its 2 floors and 3 bedrooms really is amazing 🙂
Zurich is one of the most beautiful cities in the world. It boasts of great event centres and it is used as a business hub for most world meetings so, it is only normal for it to have the best hotels available. To be honest, I really like the fact that you have simplified this post here and thank you so much for sharing herd. Thumbs up to you for sharing here
Zurich is definitely one of the most beautiful cities in the world Emman and thanks for pointing it out. Business is a big draw and as such hotels in Zurich Switzerland are indeed some of the best out there. You’re welcome and glad you found value in the post.
My colleagues regularly travel to Zurich for business and Board meetings and have, until now, been paying “top end” prices, albeit through online booking, at 5* hotels. Your site is something I will be referring them to, as you suggest an excellent choice of different hotels but at slightly more accessible prices. Furthermore, you offer some helpful general travel advice on what you can do in Zurich. I notice that Switzerland, like many countries in the region has been badly hit by Covid 19. Once things return to normal or as near as normal do you think the hotels you have suggested will be offering incentives to attract customers to return?
Thank you for the comments Trevor and glad to see that you found these hotels in Zurich Switzerland prices to be competitive. Covid-19 presents an opportunity for hotels to get things inside more pristine than ever before, and once the virus passes, hotels would do well to offer incentives like you’ve pointed out, and most likely will. Great question and stay safe out there!
Hi, Thank you so very much for your amazing Article. Personally, I am planning to go on Holiday this Summer and with your amazing Content, you have just directed me to where I will spend my Holiday. Your great list of the penthouse compiled is a great encouragement. I must visit Switzerland this Summer. Thank you.
Hi Martha. Hopefully you will get to visit one of the above hotels in Zurich Switzerland as soon as possible this summer. It would make for an outstanding summer trip indeed. Two events that you might check out if they are confirmed are Zürifäscht Festival, which occurs early in July, or Street Parade Zurich, which happens in early August. Hopefully the world is back on track by then, but for now during Covid-19 it’s a great time to dream and prepare for something like a summer trip 🙂
Hello,
I can not by-pass this article without letting you know that I am very thankful for the time you have spent while researching as well as gathering together this informative and comprehensive pot.
My elder brother visited this place in 2017 and all that he narrated made me love to go there. I have been collecting some money so that I make 2020 a year of a trip to Zurich, but soon, I will have to. I only have to wait for this Pandemic to end.
This hotel Atlantis by Giardino has completely captured my attention and I have funnily bookmarked the booking page.
Thank you for the comprehensive info
Hello there and thank you for the comments. Once the Covid-19 pandemic passes these hotels in Zurich Switzerland will be quite appealing. Glad to see that your brother had some good things to say about the city and hopefully you get to visit soon as well.

David once the pandemic is controlled hopefully you’ll get to revisit and check out one of these hotels in Zurich Switzerland, as they should suit your taste better for sure.
Just looking at the pictures of the hotels here and the services they offer really gives me some positive stress, it just pushes me to want to work harder. Hahah the prices are quite expensive for a school kid like me but this is definitely the life I want to live, a life staying in the Dolder Grand and having a view of that breath taking lake. One day I will get to stay one one of these 4K price hotels on my visit to Zurich. Thank you for this really interesting article and beautiful pictures room
Donny hopefully you get to visit one of these hotels in Zurich Switzerland soon, and great choice in The Dolder Grand. You’re welcome and thanks for stopping by.
Zurich looks so beautiful and it’s definitely on my list of places that I want to visit. There is so much history to learn and see up close. I love the luxe apartments for rent in Zurich! It’s great to see what the cost is when split out per person with a larger group — the big splurge suddenly seems very affordable and perfect for a girls trip to beautiful Zurich!
Aly, hotels in Zurich Switzerland would make for a great girls trip for sure as there is no lack of spas, restaurants and shopping. Also, if you’re into natural beauty there is that as well. Thanks for the comments and happy travels to you and the ladies!
