Hotels in Shanghai

Hotels in Shanghai provide wonderful accommodations in a destination nicknamed “Paris of the East” and “Pearl of the Orient”. Situated on China’s eastern coast, with the island of Taiwan to its south, Japan across the East China Sea to the east, South Korea across the Yellow Sea to the northeast and Beijing over 800 miles to the northwest, Shanghai is known for its historical landmarks, museums, art galleries, temples, impressive skyline, youthful inhabitants and “Bund” (mile-long waterfront promenade housing over fifty buildings of Gothic, Baroque, Art Deco and other architectural styles). Keep in mind that you should not drink tap water, and that many public restrooms do not provide toilet paper. Currency is the Chinese Yuan, cars travel on the right-hand side and there is no legal drinking age. Events include Shanghai International Film Festival, China Shanghai International Arts Festival, Ultra Shanghai, JZ Festival, MIDI Music Festival, Modern Sky’s Strawberry Music Festival, Storm Electronic Music Festival, Donghi Festival, Concrete & Grass Festival, New Year Bell Striking, Longhua Temple Fair, Yuyuan Lantern Festival and Harbin Ice and Snow Festival. Hotels in Shanghai are some of the best in Asia. Before we get to hotels in Shanghai, let’s take a look at some more background information on the area to help you along the way.

An ancient city, Shanghai was first inhabited roughly 6,000 years ago. First a fishing village and then a market town, the area that would become Shanghai was favored due to its port location. Early time periods were known as the Spring and Autumn period and the Warring States period. From 771 to 476 BC, the area passed from the Kingdom of Wu to the Kingdom of Yue to the Kingdom of Chu. Qinglong Town, in the modern Qingpu District, was a major trading port during the Tang and Song dynasties. In 1074, the area, having been moved downstream of the Wusong River, was upgraded from a village to a market town. Under the Ming dynasty, events in 1554 and 1602 contributed to Shanghai’s development. A city wall was built in 1554 to fend off Japanese pirates. In 1602, a City God Temple was built during the Wanli era. Shanghai became one of the Yangtze Delta region’s most important sea ports during the Qing dynasty. The First Opium War of 1839 resulted in Britain’s occupation of the city and the Treaty of Nanking. Shanghai grew during the 19th century and expanded rapidly after the 1930s. Two years prior to the start of World War II, the three-month-long Battle of Shanghai occurred between the Republic of China and the Empire of Japan, resulting in a Japanese victory. During World War II, the United States and its Allies included the Republic of China, of which Shanghai was the largest city. In the 1990s, economic reforms took place, as evidenced today in places such as the Shanghai Stock Exchange and the Shanghai Free-Trade Zone.

Located on China’s eastern coast, Shanghai is at the end of the Yangtze River. The world’s third-longest river, the Yangtze is also  the longest river to flow entirely within one country. Shanghai’s 24 million+ inhabitants make it the most heavily populated city in China, as well as the world’s second-most populated behind Tokyo. The Port of Shanghai is the busiest container port in the world. Shanghai’s climate is humid-subtropical, with average highs around 90 degrees Fahrenheit in July, and 46 degrees in January. Shanghai has an array of architectural styles, most notably The Bund (a row of early 20th century structures). The Pearl of the Orient contributes to around 3.7% of China’s total GDP.  Its largest industries are finance, retail, real estate, IT, machine and automotive manufacturing. Major points of interest are Lujiazui, Huangpu River, Yu Garden, China Art Museum, Qibao, Nanjing Road, Songjiang Square Pagoda, Zhenru Temple, East Nanjing Road, Shanghai Museum, Shanghai Grand Theater, Shanghai Exhibition Center, Oriental Pearl Tower, Shanghai Tower and St. Ignatius Cathedral. Popular foods include crucian carp, Shanghai crab, mandarin fish, Beggar’s chicken (chicken wrapped in lotus leaves), pork belly, Lion’s head (a type of pork meatball), sweet and sour spare ribs and dumplings. Drinks are the traditional Baijiu alcoholic drink, beer, milk tea, coffee and coconut milk. Now that we have some background information on the area, it’s time for hotels in Shanghai that will help make for a rewarding experience.

  1. Shanghai is a home of beauty and very many artefacts and seeing that they offer their fair share of providing options of hotels that are really of great quality. This is good. Thumbs up to you for sharing all these here. I just could not single pick from the list here. They all just look too amazing to be true

  2. This is a great comprehensive guide for penthouse rentals in Shanghai! As someone who’s interested in history, I appreciate the information about Shanghai’s history, climate, and points of interest at the beginning of the article. I had no idea that the Port of Shanghai is the busiest container port in the world! The listing that jumped out to me above the rest was the St. Regis, mostly due to proximity to the natural history museum and Jade temple. Thanks for this great article!

  3. Hi,

thank you for this list! All these hotels are looking really fancy and the number of extra features in each one of them is quite impressive. I just have one question about the view: Let’s say I book a room in a hotel (not a suite). Is it safe that I will get a good view of the city? Or could I end up facing another skyscraper? That would make the holiday experience less unforgettable 🙂

    1. Hi Alex, great question. Generally the higher the price the better the view, and you should be able to get the details next to each particular room, so keep a close eye there 🙂

His post has really expanse my knowledge so widely and has also showed me on what to do and where to enjoy the bliss of luxury if I were ever to visit the great city of Shanghai. Well! I have heard some things about the place but none as good as the listing here. Thanks
